A Philanthropist’s Legacy Lives On At Canterbury Woods

Canterbury Woods Senior Living Community was built on the site of the former Holiday House, a 17-room mansion owned by Miss Margaret Tennant. The HolidayHouse was built to be used exclusively for philanthropic and educational purposes. Her wishes were carried out for 67 years, first as a home for seniors, then “unfortunate” girls, and, then, a “rest, cure sanitarium.” In 1964, the mansion was demolished to make room for an Episcopal Senior Community, expanding the numbers that could be served on the corner of Forest and Sinex. Today, you’ll find comfortable apartments and cottages set on six acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, including a tranquil Japanese garden, the Jade Garden with a gazebo, and the central courtyard—the site of many popular community events. The facility also boasts a spacious lounge and auditorium, an on-site chapel, a library, an exer-cise room, arts & crafts room, billiard room and gallery. Although there is no rea-son to leave these lush and tranquil surroundings, Canterbury Woods is within walking distance to town and they will even provide transportation. We think Miss Tennant would be pleased.

AHavenForArtistsPacific Grove has long been a haven for artists and now more than ever before. A number of working studios have sprung up downtown, creating an enthusiastic and inspiring atmo- sphere. Within just a few blocks, you’ll find almost a dozen galleries and working studios.

We recommend dedicating a Saturday afternoon to your own private art walk.

Start at 213 Grand Avenue, where you’ll find that guy you always see at Asilomar Beach painting those masterful seascapes. Barry Marshall has finally opened a studio gallery so we can see his completed works and even take one home. Then continue down the street to 170 Grand where you’ll find an enchanting little enclave of artists working in their studios—painting, stitching, grouting— almost like Santa’s elves. Follow the hallway to its end for a most magical experience. There, mosaic artist, Stefanna Murphy Robins, holds court in her brilliantly whimsical studio, usually with grout on her hands, always with a smile on her face. Robins also showcases the work of a half dozen of her artist friends in this unique space. It’s truly a stop not to be missed.

Visit Artisana Gallery at 309 Forest Avenue, where Adrianne Johnson features her work and that of over a dozen local artists and craftspeople. Adrianne’s Co-op of includes the legendary Jade sculptor, Don Wobber. Just down the street is SunStudios, where you’ll find fine metal engravings by Lee Mitchell and works by the talented assemblage artist, Ray Magsalay, as well as local jewelers and glass blowers.

The Works Bookstore and coffeehouse also has its own gallery featuring beautiful works of local painter, Leela Markham.

End your art walk at Hauk Gallery of Fine Art, for the best of the best in early and contemporary California art. Here you will find works signed by William Adams, Percy Grey, S. C. Yuan, and the remarkable Belle Yang, among many others. Move over Carmel, Pacific Grove’s artist community is a force to be reckoned with!

Pacific Grove was founded in 1875 as a Methodist church camp-ground. It was incorporated as a city on July 16, 1889 and became a Charter city on April 22,1927. Pacific Grove boasts over 1200 prop-erties in its Historic Inventory, more than any other city of its size in America. Sitting at the tip of the Peninsula, it is the only city to offer five miles of public shoreline along both the Pacific Ocean and the Monterey Bay. Pacific Grove is also one of the remaining over-wintering locations for the Monarch Butterfly.

Public Art In Our Post Office “Lovers’ Point” - by Victor Arnautoff, 1940

The mural that graces the wall of the Pacific Grove Post Office is part of the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) Federal Art Project, created to help provide economic relief to the American citizens suffering through the Depres-sion. This program produced over 225,000 works of public art. Victor Arnautoff was assigned to create a mural for Pacific Grove. This talented artist studied at the California School of Fine Arts before moving to Mexico to work as an assistant to Diego Rivera. He returned to California and taught art at Stanford University for more than 20 years before moving permanently to his native Rus-sia. The most well known of Arnautoff’s works is “City Life,” the largest mural in San Francisco’s Coit Tower collection. Others are on public display throughout the Bay Area, in Richmond, and Palo Alto, California.

While the majority of these Federal Art Project murals are images of hard work-ing people and historical events, Arnautoff chose a day at the beach for Pacific Grove.

Dining in Pacific Grove can be a cultural exploration with an array of unique ethnic culinary experiences to sample. We recommend you try something different, something that will tantalize your palate. Sample cuisine made from recipes saved from the ruins of the ancient, lost city of Petra, or or take a culinary trip to Thailand, just a few blocks from your home. There’s always Fifi’s—imagine a night in Paris. Maybe you’re craving fresh sushi prepared like back home in Japan or are simply looking for a bowl of New England-style clam chowder. No need to venture far or save up for the trip.

Eat out tonight and take home memories of a unique culinary experience.

Tips For Sustainable Living:• Set thermostats to 65-68F during the day and 55-58F at night;

• Turn lights and electronic devices off when not in use;

• Set water heater temperature set at 120F; cold water for laundry.

• Assessments in home energy efficiency can make a big difference.

Still Butterfly Town USAPacific Grove is All A Buzz October—MarchOur Monarch Grove Sanctuary (see center page Map)is bustling with beautiful bugs—Take time to visit the Sanctuary before our guests leave in March.

It truly is a natural phenomenon worth experiencing.The Monarch ventures some 2,000 miles, covering one hundred miles per day, and flying as high as 10,000 feet to reach its vacation destination, never having been here before. They cluster in the pine and eucalyptus trees and flutter about town.

You can learn more about the Pacific Grove’s Monarch Butterflies at City of Pacific Grove’s website, www.ci.pg.ca.us/monarchs. To help ensure the sustainability of our Sanctuary, volunteer to be a part of the City of Pacific Grove’s Monarch But-terfly Docent Program, call 648-5716 ext 11.

While the majority of these Federal Art Project murals are images of hard work-ing people and historical events, Arnautoff chose a day at the beach for Pacific Grove.

at the turn of the last century. Yet, there is still a strong sense of faith and unity to be found in Pacific Grove. The city is home to numerous non-profit organizations benefiting a myriad of worthy causes and boasts over a dozen places of worship in assorted denominations.
