School-Sponsored. As the name implies, a school-sponsored cheer and dance team is directly affiliated with a school. To be part of this team, all members must attend that school. Although there are school-sponsored teams that participate in competitions, their main purpose is to promote school spirit and to encourage students to cheer for the school’s athletes during sporting events.

College/University. Although college or university teams are also considered school-sponsored, they are quite different from those in primary or high schools. Unlike in school-sponsored teams, screenings and tryouts are tougher when it comes to college-level teams. Also, cheerleaders are expected to attend games, as well as other school-related functions. They can also join regional and national competitions and winning teams usually get huge rewards, which usually include scholarship grants, from their respective schools.

Youth. You don’t have to be enrolled in a specific school to be part of a youth cheerleading team.  And by joining a team at the youth level, you can learn the basics of the sport, teamwork, sportsmanship, and other skills that can help you become a great cheer athlete in the future. However, while it is true that you’re not required to study at a specific school to be a cheerleader at the youth level, you must maintain good scholastic records to remain in your team.

All Star. All Star cheer and dance teams are perhaps the most popular of all team types because they accept both male and female members regardless of age and skill levels. Unlike school-sponsored and collegiate teams, the main focus of all star teams is to compete. So if you’re the type of person who loves to compete, then joining an all star team is your best bet.

Professional. Professional cheer and dance teams, meanwhile, cheer for professional sports clubs. Although they don’t compete, these teams accept only the cream of the crop. Therefore, being part of professional teams is no easy task. Aside from cheering for their respective sports organisation, members of professional cheer teams also make public appearances, do modelling and advertising jobs, and attend philanthropic and charity events.- See more at: http://worldcupcheer.com.au/discover-the-5-common-types-of-cheer-and-dance-teams/#more-971
