Part 1 0.00 – 1.07

Welcome to a very special podcast. Today I’m about to experience one of

England’s greatest exports, the Premier league. I think it’s fair to say football

has taken over the world becoming almost religious in some places. This

passion or madness, depending on whether you love or loathe the game, was

best summed up by the legendary football manager Bill Shankly when he

said “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I can assure

you that it is much more important than that.” And so with those words I

welcome you to North London and White Hart Lane, home of the famous

Tottenham Hotspur.

Part 2 1.15 – 2.20

It’s the last day of the season and I’m here to watch my boyhood team

Tottenham Hotspur play Birmingham City. Now I don’t know if you can tell

but I’m pretty excited. Ever since my first match at the age of seven I’ve

always got a buzz from walking to the stadium and seeing it towering above

the terraced houses along the High Road and to be honest I still get

butterflies even today.

I guess the match day experience is much more than just the football. It’s

about the atmosphere, the banter between both sets of fans, the chanting,

the sense of belonging and the rollercoaster of emotions. It really can get

the pulses racing especially if you’re a Tottenham fan.

Today the Premier league is the world’s most watched and lucrative league

in the World attracting huge TV audiences and the top players from around

the world. However in the 1980s English football suffered from

hooliganism and poor quality stadia. Thankfully things changed and in

1992 the Premier league was set up. Back then there were just 11 non-

British or Irish players in the league, now almost 20 years later there are over

300. What was once a truly English league has embraced the World.

Part 3 2.29 – 3.36

So I’ve been a Tottenham fan all my life and for me Tottenham is in the

blood. My great-grandfather was one of the founding members of the club

back in 1882, so in other words I had no choice but to be a Spurs fan. And I’m

in good company, other Spurs fans include Bob Marley, Gabriel Garcia

Marquez and the NBA basketball player Steve Nash.

I’ve been joined by my mate Joe, who is a season ticket holder at the Park

Lane end, which is where all the singing and chanting occurs and it’s where

we’ll be sitting today.

Tom – So Joe describe a match day at Tottenham for me.

Joe – Well normally fans gather at Seven Sisters tube station and then walk

along the High Road often maybe stop for a pint in one of the pubs along the

way. And then everyone gets to White Hart Lane and it’s always a good

boisterous atmosphere it’s always an exciting day.

Tom - What makes Tottenham so special?

Joe - I think that we’ve been at this same part of Tottenham for like a 120

years and it’s the same ground, the same spot, the club’s got a great history a

great heritage.

Tom – What’s your prediction for today’s game?

Joe – I think that today I’ll go for a three one win to the mighty lillywhites.

Tom - Alright, let’s go in.

Part 4 3.547 – 4.24

Tom - Ok, I’m walking up the steps into the ground. Wow, it’s incredible.

Tom – Ok Joe it’s half time how’s the game gone so far?

Joe – Oh it’s been very frustrating so far.

Tom – Yeah and what about the atmosphere? How’s the atmosphere?

Joe – It’s been quite a good atmosphere, last day of the season. It’ll be even

better if we get a couple of goals in the second half.

Part 5 4.32 – 6.46

Ah it’s a great effort from Sandro there, the keeper just tipped it round the

post. The atmosphere is buzzing in here.

Tottenham have just scored, Pavlyuchenko with an amazing goal. 1-0

Tottenham Hotspur.

Birmingham have just equalised. It was a great goal, so now it’s 1-1.

Birmingham city are attacking, it’s the last minute. I hope Tottenham can

hold on.

Tottenham have just scored in the last minute. 2-1 Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Scenes of celebration that’s the final whistle, Tottenham have won 2-1,

what an ending.

Wow, I’m stood outside the ground and you’ll be glad to know that I’ve

calmed down a little bit. The last few fans are just leaving the stadium and I

think they’re pretty happy. It was an engrossing game which got a bit tense

towards the end and slightly nerve-racking for both sets of fans but

thankfully Tottenham came out on top 2-1. I’ve really enjoyed sharing a
