Lee Valley VeloPark • Bring the Geography and

Design & Technology curricula to life with our specially created Lee Valley VeloPark legacy programmes, the first of their kind in the UK (see page 11 and 15).

• Let your students feel the adrenalin as they experience track, BMX, mountain or road cycling in the iconic London 2012 venue for themselves (see page 22).

• Create an action packed day by combining one of our innovative new Geography and Design & Technology programmes with a cycling session.

Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre• Take advantage of the

outstanding facilities for hockey and tennis at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, host venue of Wheelchair Tennis during the London 2012 Paralympic Games (see page 21).

• Encourage your students to try a game of hockey with Rush Hockey and Quicksticks, adapted versions of the game aimed at getting more players into the sport (see page 21).

Did you know that Lee Valley Regional Park includes several of the most spectacular venues from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games?

By visiting these venues you can relive the sporting and cultural achievements of the London 2012 Games and inspire young people with the legacy of a memorable summer.

Several of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic venues offer both outdoor learning programmes and sporting activities – providing a fantastic opportunity to combine the two for a great day out.

Lee Valley Regional Park stretches for 26 miles across London, Essex and Hertfordshire. This fantastic park features a diverse mix of heritage sites, nature reserves and open green spaces alongside world class sports venues.

The park offers unique opportunities to young people through specially created outdoor learning programmes and a wide range of sporting activities.

From minibeast hunting and orienteering to river walks and farm tours; from horse riding and cycling to ice skating and white water rafting there’s something here for everyone, whatever their age, ability or interest.

To help you make the most of the park, a diverse range of outdoor learning programmes has been created especially for schools, post 16, special needs and youth groups.

The half day programmes are led by experienced staff and you can make a full day by choosing two programmes or by adding a sporting activity (see page 20). To make sure you get the most out of your visit activities can be tailored to suit the needs of your group.

The activities aim to engender a sense of ownership and understanding of the natural world, drawing on internationally important nature reserves and a wide array of species and habitats.

Who are our programmes for?The wide range of programmes have been designed to appeal to young people from all backgrounds to help them make the most of these open spaces within easy reach of urban areas. Each of the programmes delivers specific topics from the curriculum in a uniquely engaging and hands on way, providing an unforgettable outdoor learning experience.

Primary schools Activities have been developed to fit the existing National Curriculum for Reception, Key Stage 1 and 2 and also the new primary curriculum.

Secondary schools and post 16 Activities will bring to life the National Curriculum for Key Stage 3 and 4, GCSE, BTEC, A level and degree criteria. We’re also able to cater for groups of up to 800 on orienteering sessions and whole year groups on other programmes.

All the primary and secondary programmes on the following pages can be adapted for youth groups and can help members achieve their outdoor badges and award schemes. Lee Valley Regional Park with its 10,000 acres of open spaces and heritage venues is ideal for hosting events with large numbers of participants. Special schools and groups with special needs Specially designed, adaptable programmes and project weeks are available to suit the needs of groups with a range of disabilities or educational needs.

We can also adapt mainstream programmes to suit your groups. Staff running these activities are Makaton trained.

Students can combine a range of short, sensory, art and environmental activities through the Explore project; options include the unnatural tree trail, clay sculpting, apple bird feeders, minibeast hotels and nature’s impressions.

Primary schools and groups Give your children a unique outdoor experience and make the most of our 10,000 acres of wildlife, nature reserves and heritage sites with one of these specially created outdoor learning programmes.

Each programme takes two hours unless otherwise stated and has been mapped to the curriculum. Guidance as to the curriculum topics, more detail on the programme and teacher’s guides can be found at visitleevalley.org.uk/primary

Project booklets will be provided on the day of your visit if required for the programme.

Price per student: £5.00 per half day £7.80 per full day (unless otherwise stated).

Minimum charge for 20 students (15 for youth groups, 10 for special needs).

Autumn fruits, seeds and leaves Subjects:

Experience the amazing changes in plants during autumn. Students use role play games to understand a seed’s needs for life, test their skills on the squirrel nut hunt, collect and identify leaves, then plant their own seed to take home.

The unique setting of Waltham Abbey Gardens provides the perfect venue for a local history study which takes students back in time.Students use role play, games, sensory activities, chronology and investigation skills to explore archaeological remains and discover the story of Waltham Abbey’s important historical past.

Art of nature Subjects:

Use the wonder of nature to inspire your students. Pick and mix from a wide range of nature based art and craft activities tailored to topics and seasons. Students take an investigative, hands-on approach and use a wide range of art and design techniques to explore colours and textures of natural materials within the park. Options include natural clay sculpting, flower pounding, nature’s symmetry and mud painting.

Explore the habitat of one of the rarest birds in the Lee Valley. Migrate to our bird hide and use binoculars to observe and record waterbird behaviour in this internationally important habitat.

Cunning running Subjects:

GEO PE Explore the park with our introduction to the exciting sport of orienteering. This fun fuelled competition allows groups to learn and reinforce important team building and map skills whilst challenging them to answer our nature quiz for extra points. Alternatively, engage your students with the Lee Valley Challenge: a London 2012 Games fact-finding mission. The class will be split into small groups, each of which must be accompanied by an adult.

Students take their inspiration from nature as they create their own models of marvellous minibeasts from recycled material using the design process. They research minibeasts through collection classification and identification, then evaluate their adaptations and refine their final design.

Experience the start of your milk’s journey to the supermarket shelf. This guided tour of our working dairy farm explores the crops we grow, how we look after our animals and wildlife, methods of milking and the farmer’s job. Self-guided visits of our farms are also available.

Meet the locals and make friends with a whole host of farmyard favourites, from pigs to sheep, goats to ducks. There are also some creatures you wouldn’t expect to find, including meerkats, monkeys, reindeer, reptiles and llamas. Follow the ‘Whose baby?’ trail with downloadable booklets and teacher‘s guides to make the most of your visit.

Rivers walk Subjects:

GEO A unique opportunity to compare and contrast the natural features of the meandering River Lea with the straight River Lee Navigation. Students discuss and record river features and birdlife, complete field sketches and use fair testing skills to measure flow rates. This programme is two and a half hours long.

Focus on dragonflies Subjects:

This twist on a traditional pond dipping session allows you to discover one of the most amazing insects in the world. Students follow this monster minibeast through its lifecycle, survey where the eggs are laid and stream dip in the dragonfly nymphs’ habitat. Students use classification keys to identify aquatic creatures.Visit Cornmill Meadows dragonfly sanctuary and hopefully get a glimpse of the incredible adult insects.

Weird and wonderful minibeasts thrive in the urban habitats throughout the Lee Valley. Students play the ‘needs of life’ game. Then collect, identify and classify minibeasts from a range of micro-habitats, to discover which areas make the best home. An iPod option is also available.

The ‘Great Stink’ Subjects:

Uncover local history and bring the water cycle to life by discovering the ‘Great Stink’ of 1858. Students follow chronological events that link to the history of London and learn about the effect of dirty water on the population. Visit the Essex Filter Beds, which cleaned Victorian London’s drinking water, for a demonstration of filtration and to see how they now form an unusual urban nature reserve.

SCI Enjoy an exciting mix of environmental activities that use all the senses as students uncover for themselves the delights of learning outdoors. Try the feely bag challenge, collect fallen treasures and explore colour and shape using magnifying glasses and colour fans. They need to be ‘all ears’ as they listen for natural and human made sounds. They also test their sense of smell as they discover natural aromas and then take a look at their taste buds before they plant a seed to grow into something tasty!

Seed to supper Subjects:

Grow your students’ ID skills and knowledge of plant life cycles as they experience the journey from seed to supper. Students use fruit and vegetables to name and identify plants and study the tiny seeds from which they grow. They also learn about a seed’s needs for life by playing the Seed Tig game, discover plant variation by taking part in a scavenger hunt, pretend to be a pollinator in the ‘Pollination Game’ and then plant a seed to take home.

Orienteering Subjects:

GEO PE TB

Orienteering is the ultimate activity to help your group bond and gain confidence. Working in groups, students learn the fundamental principles of navigation. Put your team to the test on one of our three orienteering programmes. Students under 14 should compete in groups accompanied by an adult.

Classic orienteering Students learn the essential skills using a map and compass as they explore our permanent orienteering course. They can test their tactical planning with our score course.

Lee Valley Challenge Orienteering with a twist: engage your students with the additional challenge of a London 2012 Games fact-finding mission. In River Lee Country Park, home

of Lee Valley White Water Centre, students are encouraged to embrace the Olympic and Paralympic values as they compete. GPS orienteering In this programme, students navigate our permanent orienteering course using touch-screen GPS machines. GPS orienteering also offers students the chance to develop new information and communication technology skills.

Broxbourne Riverside Located in the north of River Lee Country Park near Lee Valley Boat Centre, this outdoor venue provides many historical links alongside a variety of natural habitats. Free car and coach parking with toilets is available a short walk away in the adjacent Broxbourne Old Mill and Meadows site.

Myddelton House Gardens Created by the famous plantsman E A Bowles (1865–1954), the gardens have been undergoing restoration since 1984. The Kitchen Garden has recently been restored to its former glory and a visitor centre with museum has been created. The gardens offer a safe and unique educational site with free car and coach parking and toilets.

River Lee Country Park Transformed from a series of old gravel pits into an attractive range of habitats, River Lee Country Park comprises a number of internationally important habitats for wetland wildlife. Wide, surfaced paths make much of the 1,000 acres of the River Lee Country Park accessible to all. At the main park entrances there are toilets and free parking for cars and coaches.

Tottenham Marshes This site offers over 100 acres of open space with free car and coach parking. Large areas of the marshes are managed for nature conservation with wildflower meadows, woodlands and scrub, a wildlife garden and a permanent orienteering course.

Waltham Abbey Gardens and Cornmill Meadows Waltham Abbey Gardens has two fully equipped classrooms, toilets, an enclosed picnic area and free car and coach parking at Waltham Abbey Gardens. The dragonfly sanctuary at Cornmill Meadows and the nearby River Lee Country Park provide a wide variety of habitats for students to explore.

WaterWorks Centre The Essex Filter Beds on this site were used to clean Victorian London’s drinking water and have now been transformed into a unique nature reserve with an unusual bird hide. The centre has a classroom, toilets and free car and coach parking.

Lee Valley Park Farms Lee Valley Park Farms consists of a visitor attraction with over 200 farm animals including rare breeds as well as a working dairy, arable and beef farm. The farms are well equipped for school visits with free car and coach parking, picnic areas, café, indoor play areas, toilets and hand washing facilities.

Schools, post 16 and groups As well as being a centre of outdoor learning, Lee Valley Regional Park is also home to a number of world class sports venues where young people can experience playing a variety of different sports. Three of these were host venues during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and all seven venues are guaranteed to provide your students with a unique sporting experience. Where else can you offer young people the chance to play hockey on an international standard pitch, cycle round a London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic track or take up horse riding and ice skating?

The following pages showcase just some of the activities on offer at each venue for schools, post 16, special needs and youth groups but there are lots of other options available for groups of all sizes and abilities – just contact the venue directly to make an enquiry or book an activity.

Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre Situated on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre hosted the London 2012 Paralympic Wheelchair Tennis Competition.

It boasts four indoor and six outdoor tennis courts, plus two water based hockey pitches, all available for groups to use.

Hockey and tennis

Hockey Test your mettle on one of the best hockey pitches in the country, enter one of our school hockey festivals, or try out the adapted Quicksticks version of the game for primary aged students and Rush Hockey for secondary school students, post 16 and groups. Training sessions are also available.

Cycling disciplines

Track cyclingEnter the world of track cycling using special fixed wheels bikes. Qualified coaches put you through your paces as you ride the same boards which saw world records broken during London. Age: 12-18 years (minimum height 145cm).

BMXLearn the gravity defying sport of BMX – our track is ideal for beginners as its completely rollable, for those with a greater skill level then the bumps and berms will offer some great challenges. Age: 7 – 18 years (minimum height 127cm).

Road cyclingA one mile tarmac circuit is idea for young people to learn about road racing, key bike handling skills and confidence – it’s a great place to start for riders wishing to progress to other disciplines. Age: 10 – 18 years (minimum height 135cm).

Mountain biking Miles of graded outdoor trails allows students to develop their off-road riding skills, whether they’re a keen mountain biker or a complete novice. Age: 10 - 18 years (minimum height 135cm).

Lee Valley White Water Centre Lee Valley White Water Centre is home to some of the world’s best slalom canoeists and kayakers and was the host venue of the London 2012 Canoe Slalom events, where Team GB won Olympic gold and silver medals in the men’s Canoe Slalom doubles.

The purpose built lake and two white water courses offer a unique opportunity to schools and groups wanting to get a taste of all paddlesport activities from canoeing and kayaking to white water rafting.

Safety is paramount with our qualified raft guides and canoe/kayak coaches on hand. All safety equipment is provided, as well as full risk assessments for all activities. The venue has been certified by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA).

Minimum numbers apply for some activities, as well as some age restrictions. The activities are available, Wednesday to Friday, seasonally so please contact the centre directly for more details and to book. All sessions last one and a half hours unless stated.

Paddlesport White water rafting Legacy Loop Discover the thrill of white water rafting in this exciting group activity. Each five person raft is guided around the fast flowing rapids of the 160m Legacy Loop by one of our experienced instructors. We’ll provide a full safety briefing before your group begins this activity.

White water rafting Olympic Standard Competition Course Challenge your group to tackle the course of Olympic champions in our nine person rafts. Guided by one of our instructors, they will ride the rapids of this exciting 300m course. We’ll provide a full safety briefing before your group begins this activity. This session last two hours.

HydrospeedingNavigate the rapids of the Legacy Loop on a hydrospeed – it’s a cross between a bodyboard and a swimming float. This fun and physical white water challenge builds up students confidence and skills to help them carve, turn and surf under their own power on the 160m Legacy Loop.

Instructed flat water kayaking Our open water lake provides pupils with the perfect environment to learn the skills of canoeing and kayaking under the instruction of one of our canoe coaches. Lee Valley Athletics Centre Our magnificent athletics centre is the training venue for a number of world class athletes. We create a welcoming environment for school and community groups and provide a friendly, flexible approach to developing athletics opportunities. Lee Valley Riding Centre Our British Horse Society accredited equestrian centre provides riding sessions and activities to cater for a range of age groups and abilities, including sessions for young people with disabilities, in a safe, fun and professional environment.

The centre has both indoor and outdoor floodlit arenas ensuring activities run whatever the weather.

Sessions run Monday to Friday 09:00 – 16:00 and must be booked up to four weeks in advance.

Horse riding Riding lesson

Learn the skills of horse riding through our schools’ riding lessons. We’ll match each student to one of our well trained and good natured ponies for lessons delivered by our qualified instructors.

Riding and grooming session Why not extend your visit by including a horse grooming session along with your riding lesson? Lee Valley Ice Centre Used by ice hockey teams, skating clubs and professional stars – as well as plenty of skating beginners – Lee Valley Ice Centre is a centre of excellence for ice skating and ice sports in London and the South East. The international size ice pad (56m x 26m) can accommodate up to 800 skaters and has seating for 760 spectators too.

Ice skating Learn to Skate Exclusive to schools, a structured series of ice skating sessions is available through our Learn to Skate programme. During school term times, these weekly sessions (minimum six participants) are led by our team of nationally qualified skating instructors and follow the National Skating Association’s national curriculum. Each student receives a record of achievement.

Each lesson lasts for 30 minutes; following the lesson all students are allowed to use the ice for the duration of the session.Age: all ages

For all sporting activities, please contact the venue directly – see pages 21 to 30 for details. We recommend booking early for any of our programmes or venues to avoid disappointment.

Do you have a health and safety policy? Lee Valley Regional Park has a comprehensive health and safety policy. All programmes are risk-assessed and led by experienced staff.

For outdoor learning programmes our teacher’s guides for visiting group leaders are available from our website visitleevalley.org.uk/education. We are happy to arrange pre-visits for teachers who are unfamiliar with the sites.

Are your staff DBS checked? Our experienced staff lead all the sessions. All staff have full Disclosure and Barring Service clearance – formerly known as CRB check.

Is the park accessible? The park is committed to improving access for all. The majority of the park is fully accessible to those with mobility issues as it has surfaced pathways running throughout. How should I travel to the park? The park stretches over 26 miles and includes several venues and points of entry as you can see from the map on the inside back cover.
