When a whole country’s calling your number.Few things get a Spaniard’s attention more than football. Around 12 million people – astonishingly, more than a quarter of the nation’s entire population – watched the 2016 Champion’s League. Other big games can pull in up to eight million viewers.

Lots watch at home. As they settle down for the match, many reach for the phone to order a pizza. And the company they most often call is Telepizza, the largest non-US pizza delivery company in the world.

Telepizza says the secret of its success is in the dough. But as the pre-match orders pour in, a second vital ingredient helps Telepizza keep those huge numbers of customers satisfied. That other secret? A strong partnership with BT.

Case study - Telepizza.

The BT cloud gives us the support and resources we need in times when orders are running high, while saving costs when demand tails off.

Emilio TovarCIO, Telepizza

Discovering Telepizza’s secret recipe.

Telepizza needed to take near-unlimited order numbers without financing the infrastructure. BT’s cloud services made the stretch.

Case Study - Telepizza.

Adopting the flexible route to global growth. With operations up and running in Peru, Colombia, Dubai, Guatemala, El Salvador, Poland, Portugal and Chile, Telepizza was heading towards other markets like Russia, Ecuador and Panama.

Rather than invest in a Madrid-linked network in each new territory, the cloud would allow the use of IT on a pay-as-you-go basis and make the company more agile. BT was called upon to execute that cloud strategy.

Fernando Oviol, technology infrastructure manager, explains: “We need a global provider capable of IT support, including our critical sales systems, in all countries.”

We are a highly dynamic company and we need a service provider that can match our speed.

Football matches are among many occasions when Telepizza has to cope with surges in demand. The company’s business is highly variable, with hundreds of thousands of orders taken on Friday nights but muted demand on Monday mornings.

Telepizza had engineered its operations to cater for such peaks. But to make a sale the company first had to receive an order. Emilio Tovar says: “We can’t afford to ignore calls. In the past, processing massively increasing volumes would have taken a big technology investment.”

But it didn’t make sense to pay over the odds for an infrastructure that would only be used at 100 per cent capacity a few times a year.

Moving easily to a global cloud-based environment.BT helped Telepizza migrate to cloud-based Cisco unified communications with tools like instant messaging and Cisco Jabber. This allows collaboration between regional teams and Madrid for faster decision-making, with greater sustainability from reduced travel.

Business-critical Telepizza business apps now run on BT Cloud Compute using Cisco Unified Computing System servers in redundant data centres in Madrid.

All Telepizza global operations run through the Spanish ordering systems. So if a customer in Peru asks for a pizza, the Madrid system checks to see if the item’s in stock before confirming the order.

Everything’s protected by BT managed security. This includes BT Managed Firewall Security to safeguard the network perimeter and BT DDoS Security to protect the business against cyber-threats.

That architecture allows Telepizza to use as much, or as little, technology as it needs. “Telepizza has saved 33 per cent over five years with BT cloud services,” confirms Emilio Tovar.

Always online when customers choose to order. The company was expanding rapidly in cyberspace, too, and in 2014 it launched Click&Pizza, which allows customers to place orders via Twitter – or even using a special fridge magnet. The cloud was also to play a key role in this online world.

“We’ve agreed with BT an extremely high level of service,” says Emilio Tovar. “For example, we’re looking at 99.95 per cent for ecommerce services.”

Today, BT supports online and bricks-and-mortar operations for Telepizza across 15 countries and more than 1,300 stores.

Cloud of Clouds from BT: the next step in digital transformation.Telepizza is now looking at using commodity cloud services for less critical business applications; which it sees as the logical next step in the company’s digital transformation. The Cloud of Clouds strategy can support this by allowing Telepizza seamlessly to merge private and public cloud services.

“Today, all businesses must foster a digital presence to put their products on the market,” concludes Fernando Oviol. “We believe our agreement with BT and its Cloud of Clouds offer will enable us to do just that.”
