Let this orientation schedule serve as a guide for your first week on campus. We encourage you to participate in these programs and get involved. Please continue to check www.fye.pitt.edu/orientation for updates throughout the summer.

Welcome, new and transfer students! The University of Pittsburgh Division of Student Affairs invites you and your families to participate in New and Transfer Student Orientation. This week is designed to welcome you to campus and to help you get acclimated to your new home.

Welcome!

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: These programs will help students to gain the knowledge, skills, and experience to lead others in achieving a common goal. CAREER PREPARATION: These programs will help students to develop career goals and plans as well as the knowledge, skills, and experience to be more competitive in gaining employment or acceptance to graduate or professional school.

PITT PRIDE: These programs will help students to develop a sense of belonging at the University and to engage in the spirit and purpose of the Pitt community.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:These programs will help students to be effective and confident in oral, nonverbal, interpersonal, and written communications.

GLOBAL AND CULTURAL AWARENESS: These programs will help students to understand other cultures, have a heightened sense of social consciousness, and identify as global citizens.

WELLNESS: These programs will help students to gain the knowledge, behaviors, and habits conducive to health and wellness.

SERVICE TO OTHERS: These programs will help students to be conscious of the needs of others and committed to civic engagement and community service.

SENSE OF SELF: These programs will help students to apply a clear understanding and awareness of personal values, beliefs, and attitudes to manage behavior and make decisions.

APPRECIATION OF THE ARTS: These programs will help students to develop a personal definition of art derived from knowledge about and experience with a variety of art forms.

INITIATIVE AND DRIVE: Students completing the initiative and drive goal demonstrate the ability to conceptualize an ambitious goal, develop a plan to accomplish the goal, and complete all tasks to achieve the goal successfully.

OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM CURRICULUM LEGEND

The Outside the Classroom Curriculum (OCC) helps students to get connected to the University and provides a structured way for students to participate in programs and activities that will complement their academic experiences. Students who complete the initial requirements of OCC will be eligible for induction into a prestigious honor society and will enjoy special benefits on campus. There are 10 goal areas in which OCC strives to help students grow. The following symbols appear throughout the orientation schedule, indicating for which goal area OCC credit is awarded at qualifying events. International Student AppointmentsRequired for International Students

William Pitt Union, Dining Room A, First Floor

The Office of International Services (OIS) will contact all new international students with information about registering for their 10-minute in-person check-in appointment. Students will be able to register for their appointment during the times listed below. This check-in is required for OIS to register students in SEVIS. Students must complete their online check-in prior to their scheduled in-person appointment. Students should bring the following documents to their appointment: passport, I-20 or DS-2019, and OIS Compliance Form. Students only need to make one in-person appointment during orientation. All new international students are required to take the English Language Proficiency Test, administered by the English Language Institute. Students will receive information on how to register for one of the three available testing times.

OIS Welcome and IntroductionRequired for International Students

William Pitt Union, Assembly Room and Kurtzman Room, Main FloorAll new international students will receive important information on how to maintain their visa status while studying in the United States. Students also will be introduced to the resources offered by the University of Pittsburgh. The event will conclude with lunch with the Student Alumni Association.

1–4 p.m. International Parents Welcome 119 Cathedral of Learning

The Office of International Services would like to welcome all international parents to the University of Pittsburgh and help them to understand the services it provides for students. Following our discussion, we will have guided tours of the Nationality Classrooms in the Cathedral of Learning.

10 a.m.–3 p.m. Shopping at the WaterfrontBoard buses on Bigelow Boulevard near the William Pitt Union

(Buses will run continually between Bigelow Boulevard, Target, and Sutherland Hall.)Jump on the shuttle anytime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. for a chance to purchase items such as towels, pillows, electronics, and snacks at the Waterfront. The Waterfront is an open-air shopping center with more than 70 shops, restaurants, entertainment venues, and more. Visit www.waterfrontpgh.com to see what the complex contains. But don’t purchase everything today! You will have the chance to visit Target again on the late-night Target trip on Thursday, August 21.

4–5 p.m. Community Expectations Required for International Students

O’Hara Student Center, Dining Room, First Floor

This session will be used to help you in your transition to the University of Pittsburgh. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and feel better prepared for their new journey.

5–6 p.m. A Day in the Life of a Pitt Student O’Hara Student Center, Ballroom, Second Floor

International students come to Pitt from all around the world and have a variety of cultural backgrounds. In this session, we will have interactive skits about American expectations and rules related to college students.

6–9 p.m. A Night at the Union William Pitt Union, Patio, Lawn, and Nordy’s Place (Lower Level)

Join Global Ties and your fellow students for games, food, and much more! This is a great opportunity to relax and make new friends. Don’t forget to sign up for the Trip to Downtown Pittsburgh events.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 17, 2014

11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Pittsburgh TourBuses will depart from Bigelow Boulevard in front of the William Pitt Union.

Join us for a Molly’s Trolleys tour of Downtown, the Cultural District, and the North Side plus an incline ride to Mount Washington. The tour will depart from the William Pitt Union. Advance registration is required as space is limited.

12:30–5 p.m. Strip District ShoppingRound trip transportation is provided and departs from Bigelow Boulevard in front of the William Pitt Union.

Following the Pittsburgh Tour, a trolley will provide continuous shuttle service between the William Pitt Union and the Strip District. Even if you missed the tour, you’ll still have the opportunity to experience one of Pittsburgh’s most distinctive neighborhoods and discover its unique markets, restaurants, and street vendors. You’ll find ethnic grocers and fresh produce, local art, sports merchandise, and more in the Strip District.A limited number of passes to the Carnegie Museums also will be available for use on Sunday. Registration information will be available at Friday’s OIS Welcome and Introduction program.

Have questions? Need information? Staff members will be available to assist new students and families at this location. Stop by to pick up tickets for Oakland-area cultural sites.

PARENTS: You may also pick up your official University of Pittsburgh T-shirt, designed specifically for this occasion. We hope that you will wear it to the Freshman Convocation, the opening ceremony, on Wednesday, August 20, at 3 p.m. Hail to Pitt!

2–6 p.m.

Transfer Student DayWilliam Pitt Union, Assembly Room, Main Floor

Join us for an afternoon full of information and activities designed specifically for transfer students. During this event, you will learn about important offices and services on campus. You also will have the opportunity to get to know other students and meet some of the First Year Mentors (FYMs). Dinner will be provided.

MONDAY, AUGUST 18–TUESDAY, AUGUST 19 Honors Housing Orientation Various Locations

Students who will be living in the Honors Housing Living Learning Community (LLC) in Sutherland Hall West are scheduled to move in on Monday, August 18, and should plan to attend Honors Housing Orientation activities on Monday evening (families invited) and Tuesday (students only). Sutherland Hall West residents will receive more information directly from the University Honors College. If you are living in the Honors Housing LLC, please note that registration for the August 18–19 PittStart session will limit which activities you are able to attend. If you have any questions, please e-mail [email protected].

2–3 p.m. Calling All Parents of Transfer Students

You have already experienced being the parent of a college student, but you may still have questions about Pitt resources and culture. Let us reassure you that Pitt is the right (and final) choice for your student.

7:05 p.m. Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves PNC Park

Enjoy Major League Baseball action as the Pittsburgh Pirates take on the Atlanta Braves at beautiful PNC Park on Pittsburgh’s North Shore. Tickets are $6 for students and $12 for parents and family members. Bus transportation to and from the game is available for a small fee. For more information or to reserve your tickets, go to www.fye.pitt.edu. Tickets are limited and must be reserved in advance.

8–10 p.m. BINGO William Pitt Union, Assembly Room, Main Floor

Try your luck at B-I-N-G-O for a chance to win a ton of great Pitt prizes. This is a great opportunity to meet up with other students in the Class of 2018 and your First Year Mentors. Pizza will be provided.

10 p.m.–midnight Karaoke William Pitt Union, Assembly Room, Main Floor

Come show off your talent at our karaoke night. Sing alone or in a group. With hundreds of songs to choose from, you can find your favorite one. Refreshments will be provided.

Nordy’s Place is a main hangout spot for Pitt students. Come play pool or Ping-Pong or just relax and watch some TV. Slushies, popcorn, and other refreshments will be provided.

This session will cover information about alcohol, sexual assault, staying safe on campus, and mental health resources available to you as well as the University’s Student Code of Conduct and judicial process. If you have any concerns about the content of this program, please feel free to contact your resident assistant, First Year Mentor, the University Counseling Center, or the Student Health Service.

Time for AlcoholEdu and Haven Completion All first-year students should have completed the online AlcoholEdu and Haven courses prior to arriving on campus. If you have not yet completed AlcoholEdu and/or Haven, you should use part of this time to complete this requirement. Please remember that completion of both the AlcoholEdu and Haven courses is required for all incoming freshmen.

9 p.m.–2 a.m. Pre-Class Bash Bigelow Boulevard, between Fifth and Forbes Avenue Join us for this campuswide celebration prior to the start of classes. This event features a zip line, laser tag dome, photo booth, carnival games, climbing wall, and much more. Be sure to join us on both Friday and Saturday as we will have new activities, games, and prizes each night. This is an event not to miss!

10 p.m.–1 a.m. Strike! Open Bowling at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association Corner of Bigelow Boulevard and Fifth Avenue, Next to Alumni Hall (Enter from the parking lot in the back of the building off Lytton Avenue.)This underground bowling alley provides the perfect opportunity for you to test your skills. Even if bowling isn’t your game, you can still hang out with the Class of 2018 and enjoy some music, food, games, and more!

11 p.m.–1 a.m. The Oakland Teahouse William Pitt Union, Commuter Student Lounge (inside Nordy’s Place), Lower Level

A teahouse just for you, our new students. The Oakland Teahouse, a student organization, provides tea, conversation, and community. Play games, participate in discussions, meet other students, or just lounge around with a steaming mug of tea.

8 p.m. The Performance Collaborative Presents Twenty/Forty Cathedral of Learning, Studio Theatre, Basement The Performance Collaborative proudly presents its new, original version of Twenty/Forty! Twenty plays will be performed in 40 minutes, and you choose the order. All 20 plays are written, performed, and directed by Pitt students.

10 a.m. and noon Sexual Assault Bystander Intervention Required for All First-year Students

Your resident assistant or First Year Mentor will provide you with your assigned time and location.

Sexual assault and sexual harassment are taken extremely seriously by the University of Pittsburgh. As a new panther, there are many things you can do to prevent these issues from taking place. Whether it is a friend, colleague, or stranger, you have a responsibility to respond. This training will teach you how to safely and appropriately intervene to prevent sexual assault and harassment from occurring.

4–9 p.m. College Night at the Waterfront Board buses on Bigelow Boulevard outside of the William Pitt Union. Buses depart every half hour, and the last shuttle departs from the Waterfront at 8:30 p.m.

Pop by the Towne Center for free entertainment, a photo booth to capture fun moments with friends, and a chance to win a back-to-school shopping spree worth more than $500. Grab a bite at P.F. 2–5 p.m. Student Activities Fair Petersen Events Center

From political to professional, sporting to spiritual, there’s a student group for everyone! Learn about the more than 400 student organizations on campus and how to get involved in the thousands of activities that take place throughout the year. Meet the student representatives of these organizations and get lots of giveaways. Also keep a lookout for information on how you can participate in this year’s Pitt Make A Difference Day, Pitt’s largest day of service, on October 18, 2014.

7:30–9:30 p.m. Lantern Night: A Pitt Tradition Heinz Memorial Chapel

Established in 1920, the Lantern Night ceremony is the oldest University tradition. Female alumni pass the light of learning and inspiration, in the form of lighting lanterns with candles, to first-year and transfer women. The lanterns represent those used at the time of the University’s founding. First-year men also are invited to attend this special event. Business casual dress is required.
