TheFlandersFieldAmericanCemeteryandMemorialinBelgiumoccupiesa6.2-acresite.Massesofgracefultreesandshrubberyframetheburialareaandscreenitfrompassingtraffic.Attheendsofthepathsleadingtothreeofthecornersofthecemeteryarecircularretreats,withbenchesandurns.Atthispeacefulsiterest368ofourmilitarydead,mostofwhomgavetheirlivesinliberatingthesoilofBelgiuminWorldWarI.Theirheadstonesarealignedinfoursymmetricalareasaroundthewhitestonechapelthatstandsinthecenterofthecemetery.ThealtarinsidethechapelismadeofblackandwhiteGrandAntiquemarblewithdrapedflagsoneachside;aboveitisacrusader'sswordoutlinedingold.Thechapelfurnitureismadeofcarvedoak,stainedblackwithwhiteveiningtoharmonizewiththealtar;43namesareinscribedontheWalls oftheMissing.
