I t emerge d later tha t h e ha d suffere d fro m chroni c hig h bloo d pressure , bu t thi s was known t o fe w a s thi s active an d cheerfu l ma n wa s no t a perso n t o complai n abou t hi s healt h problems . Hi s deat h occurred onl y a few day s before th e start o f the DIMACS Conferenc e o n Discrete Mathematics , at whic h h e wa s t o b e a n invite d Speaker . W e wish t o fil l hi s plac e i n th e Proceeding s volum e with thi s brie f recor d o f hi s shor t bu t brillian t scientifi c career .

Mitsutaka Fujit a wa s educate d i n Kyot o Universit y a s a physicist . Afte r obtainin g hi s Dr. Sei . degre e b y a thesi s o n theoretica l physic s i n 1986 , he wo n a n ope n competitio n fo r a n assistant positio n i n th e Departmen t o f Materia l Science , Universit y o f Tsukuba . H e quickl y rose t o lecture r i n 1989 , an d t o assistan t professo r i n 1995 . Hi s earl y researc h interest s wer e directed t o th e electroni c state s o f magneti c material s includin g superconduetor s [1-25] . Hi s interest soo n turned to the emerging field of fullerene scienc e when he joined the noted researc h group o f physic s professo r Mildre d Dresselhau s a t th e Massachusett s Institut e o f Technolog y during 1991-199 2 [26] . Togethe r wit h M . an d G . Dresselhau s an d R . Saito , h e wrot e a n earl y paper o n th e applicatio n o f honeycom b ne t diagram s t o th e analysi s o f topologica l propertie s of fullerene s [27] . Clearl y a t MI T h e was i n th e righ t plac e a t th e righ t tim e t o partieipat e i n the theoretica l analysi s o f the once-in-a-lifetim e discover y o f the ne w forms o f carbon [28 , 29] . Furthermore, h e coul d se e ho w t o appl y th e powerfu l techniqu e o f 2 D projeetio n t o correlat e electronic state s an d 3 D topolog y o f carbon networks .

By eoineidence , w e ha d bee n workin g independentl y o n a ne t algorith m fo r automati c generation an d drawin g o f fullerene strueture s [M . Yoshida, E . Osawa , Bull . Chem . Soc . Jpn . 1995, 68 , 2073] , and wer e startin g t o appl y th e algorith m t o struetur e enumeration , reactivit y problems, and growt h mechanis m o f fullerenes whe n Dr .
