Getting Ready for Easter – Lent and Holy Week Forty days before Easter Sunday, Lent begins.
Lent is the time Christians prepare for Easter. It is a time to show you are sorry for bad things you did and to ask for forgiveness. One way many Christians do this is by giving something up. Some people decide not to eat different kinds and amounts of food. This is because Jesus prayed and fasted before his death on the cross. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. At special church services in the evening, ashes are placed on people’s foreheads to remind them to have a humble spirit. Lent continues until Holy Week, which is the final week of Lent. Holy Week celebrates the last week before Jesus’ crucifixion. The Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday. It celebrates the story of how Jesus came into Jerusalem and people spread palm branches and clothing before him. Maundy or Holy Thursday celebrates the last supper Jesus had with all of his followers before he was arrested. Good Friday is the day Jesus died on the cross. Three days after his death, Jesus rose from the dead. Easter Sunday celebrates this resurrection. 1. not eating or drinking _____________________________ 2. what we find after something is burnt _____________________________ 3. the part of our face between our eyes and our hair _____________________________ 4. dying on the cross _____________________________ 5. taken by soldiers or police for doing something wrong _____________________________ 6. coming alive again after being dead _____________________________
