And then the body will heal itself – will naturally seek wellness.

Simplifying the face of health can

be very calming and inspiring to your clients

and patients.

Of course, we are not very good at doing these three things consistently. The result? Chronic Dis-ease in the body. This is Why Your Clients Need You!

Insufficient nutrients happens before Deficient nutrients. True root causes are often multifactorial!

Insufficient intake Genetically higher need (e.g. MTR/MTRR) Inadequate digestion/absorption (e.g. low stomach acid, insufficient digestive

enzymes in those with diabetes (either type), missing gallbladder, history of SIBO, celiac disease, ongoing use of NSAID drugs)

Nutrient competition (e.g. zinc and copper, B7 and B5) Drug depletions (e.g. CoQ10 with statins, B12 with metformin, B6 with birth

control pills). Common ones you should memorize are listed in the resource guide in Nutrients/Supplement 101 course. Can also use www.Mytavin.com .

Poor cell membrane function (e.g. poor transport or receptor function) Magnesium and zinc are particularly key because they enable enzymes that

allow Other nutrients to be used!

Where are the Nutrients?!

Common Functional Medicine Labs(and where covered in detail in SAFM courses)

Annual Physical blood work (major pearls within the reference ranges!) Comprehensive stool tests (to assess microbial balance/pathogens, digestive function, and inflammatory

markers e.g. Genova’s GI Effects or Doctor’s Data for most comprehensive or GI Map for pathogenic microbe focus). Covered in Disease Begins in the Gut 202.

SIBO Breath test (to assess both hydrogen and methane gas over time in a multi-sample collections after ingesting a sugary beverage). Covered in Fibromyalgia Demystified and Disease Begins in the Gut 101.

Organic Acids test (aka OAT, to assess byproducts of various biochemical processes in the urine as reflection of functional nutrient deficiencies and impaired/overloaded pathways e.g. Genova’s Organix or NutrEval or Great Plains Laboratory’s OAT). Covered in The Power of Organic Acids Testing.

SpectaCell Micronutrient Test (to assess which nutrients can be increased that would lead to healthier lymphocytes; essentially a combination of functional and cellular testing). Covered in the company-offered bonus training (and this follow-on session); posted in Labwork 101.

Hormone test (to assess a variety of hormone and hormone metabolite levels and balance e.g. cortisol, DHEA, estrogens, melatonin; I highly recommend dried urine testing only e.g. DUTCH unless assessing overt gland failure/disease). Covered in the company-offered bonus training; posted in both Adrenal/Thyroid Myths and Truths and also Hormones Demystified.

Food Allergy/Sensitivity tests (to assess immune system reactions to food; NONE fully comprehensive e.g IgG, IgE, IgA, IgG4, innate immune response. I highly recommend KBMO or Cyrex panels.) Covered in the company-offered bonus training on KBMO and also in Understanding Asthma/.

Heavy Metal Toxicity (to assess evidence of impaired detoxification and/or stored toxins; NONE are quantitatively accurate. I recommend chelated urinary challenge test e.g. DMSA, but in US at present, this requires prescription. Instead, Genova’s Urine Toxic Elements (RBC). Serum toxins can be quite misleading. Much more extensive panels exist but are quite expensive.). Covered in Heavy Metal Toxicity.

Labwork is powerful. And it doesn’t have to be intimidating. However, you do not need Labwork in order to successfully

help someone to transform their lives and find significant wellness. Seriously. Be cautious about not getting too esoteric and missing out on the fundamentals.

Eating real food, hydrating well, sleeping well, experiencing daily movement, increasing fresh air, having positive expectations, acknowledging and reducing stress…these are all likely more important than ANYTHING you are going to learn from Labwork. “Don’t miss the forest for the trees.”

Don’t just replace the Prescription pad with Supplement order links

Important Perspectives!

The most important thing for you to be as a practitioner is Confident. If you feel uncomfortable working with specific labs or specific markers (or all

markers!), don’t use labs in your puzzle-piecing until you feel confident.Practice, practice, practice.

Put in the work to thoroughly understand a marker (what it means, what it’s measuring) before you review/assess/interpret Labwork for any patient or client. Thoroughly experience the appropriate DD Clinical Course and really learn it; don’t just

post labs on the WS Forum and run with “on the fly” guidance and input.

Why use lymphocytes?

Lymphocytes provide a long term nutritional marker

Contain a genetic marker (nucleated cell)

Closely tied with immune function

Representative of overall health

Take it Step by Step…

• Summary findings (first page)

• Immunidex – aggregate impact on immune function

• Spectrox – aggregate impact on antioxidant function

• Connections you Know are Likely Involved

• Deficiencies

• Borderlines (may become Deficiencies it not addressed)

• What patterns do you see?

Page 12: Disease Begins in the Gut Part 1 · Nutrient competition (e.g. zinc and copper, B7 and B5) Drug depletions (e.g. CoQ10 with statins, B12 with metformin, B6 with birth control pills)

Immunidex TM

Measures T-cell lymphocyte proliferation

Since immune function is a systemic measure of general health, a higher Immunidex™ score is generally desired since it means a person can respond efficiently not only to exogenous threats such as pathogens or allergens, but also to endogenous threats such as malignancies (& inflammation).

The reported Immunidex™ score is used to evaluate a person’s cell-mediated immune system performance.

SPECTROX TM

SpectroxTM assesses the ability of cells to resist damage caused by free radicals and other forms of oxidative stress

Due to the considerable number of cellular antioxidants with extensive interactions, redundancies, repair and recharging capabilities, measuring total function is the most accurate and clinically useful way to assess your patients’ capacity to resist oxidative damage.

Ideally, also check 8-OHdG (urine or blood).Or if unavailable, perhaps GGT or lipid peroxides. When oxidative stress is excessive, inflammation markers may also be elevated (e.g. hsCRP).

Let’s Look at a Couple of Examples…

Page 15: Disease Begins in the Gut Part 1 · Nutrient competition (e.g. zinc and copper, B7 and B5) Drug depletions (e.g. CoQ10 with statins, B12 with metformin, B6 with birth control pills)

Interpretive, Interconnected Pearls

• Stomach acid connections (B12, amino acids, minerals)

• Fat-soluble connections (Vitamins A/K2/D, oleic acid). Bile? B6? ALP?

• Magnesium and thiamine and alcohol. Also, thiamine is key for utilizing molybdenum (Mo) in the body, which is required for processing sulfites. You have clients who have known sensitivities to sulfites (often triggers histamine).

• Riboflavin (B2) also needed for MTHFR! Often an issue with migraines. And is required to convert B6 to its final form (P5P).

• Zinc & copper compete for absorption (think vegan diets?)

• Biotin & pantothenic acid compete for absorption (think biotin supplements?)

• For antioxidant function, think about supporting the body’s own synthesis, especially glutathione (e.g. selenium, zinc, Vitamin B6, serine) & superoxidedismutase (e.g. manganese).

• Cellular nutrient absorption (vs. gut) (choline, serine, magnesium, insulin-glucose, biotin, carnitine, Vitamin B2)

• This. Will. Take. Time. To Master. As in Years of use. Breathe.
