NEXT MEETING

September 8

Q-U

BRING

TREATS!

Beth Ferrier Returns to

OGQG in September

Beth is a highly experienced quilter who has a gift for

teaching. She offers fun and informative classes and

seminars for beginning and experienced quilters. Her

original patterns are available in quilt shops around the

world.

Beth was given her first sewing kit in kindergarten

and has been putting needle & thread to cloth ever

since. A quilter since 1975, it didn’t take long for her to

start designing her own patterns. A teacher by nature, it was only a mat-

ter of time before the quilting classes began.

―It’s important to me that every student come away from my class ea-

ger for the next challenge.‖ A class with Beth is always fun.

We Could Use Your Help

We have a problem. One of our guild’s major fundraisers is the Op-

portunity Quilt. Sherrill Gerard graciously accepted the position in

January but has had to step down for serious health reasons. Unfortu-

nately, we have been unable to find anyone to step up and coordinate the

display of this year’s ―Heart’s Delight‖ opportunity quilt.

Lots of hours have gone into creating and sewing this quilt. It would

be a shame if we were not able to give this wonderful quilt the exposure

it deserves.

To our members belonging to other guilds, please

ask your guild if you could display and sell tickets for

our opportunity quilt at one of their meetings. This

would be an enormous help and would be very much

appreciated.

If you are willing to do this please call me anytime at

(949) 642-4373. Thank you.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

September is

back to school

month. I guess it is

time to start watch-

ing for crossing

guards, children on

bicycles, and a big

increase in traffic.

But, it’s not time to

say goodbye to our

summer days. I am

almost certain we

have many bright

and sunny days to

come.

September is also

our Guilds’ birthday

month. It is Happy

Birthday to the Or-

ange Grove Quilters

Guild as we cele-

brate our twenty-

eighth year. Over

the years our guild

has developed and

grown into an amaz-

ing collection of gen-

erous, friendly and

caring members.

Each of you is spe-

cial. And, each of

you adds immensely

to our Guild’s suc-

cess.

As the clock con-

tinues ticking away,

we are approaching

the October 13th

deadline for several

challenges. There is

the final Guild Chal-

lenge ―What Mama

Said‖; the UFO Chal-

lenge’s fourth quilt;

and finally, the quilt

acquisitions for the

quilt show…..all are

due no later than the

October 13th guild

meeting.

I am looking ahead

with much anticipa-

tion. Keep stitching

your beautiful pro-

jects with a happy

heart.

~Ellen

Want to Learn Some Sneaky Stuff? September’s

Workshop is Just For You!!! Wow! Two days of color and creativity with Melinda Bula! Both workshop

days were filled with fun and productivity. Melinda’s delightful personality made

each and every participant dig deep into her creative possibilities and the results

were fabulous.

In September we will have Beth Ferrier at Guild teaching ―Sneaky Piecing

Tricks. This workshop will help you improve your piecing and pressing tech-

niques and learn some sneaky ways to put a block together. There is some precut-

ting, so those of you in the class be sure to check your supply list and get your

pieces cut in order to maximize class time.

Would you like to take a workshop for free in 2011? You could be the lucky

winner! Tickets will be on sale starting in September-

$1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. The drawing will be in No-

vember and the winner can choose from any work-

shop offered in 2011. Tickets are for Guild members

only and are not transferable. You can get your tick-

ets at the Workshop table.

Again, please do not hesitate to put your name on

the wait lists for workshops as many times, because

of ―life‖ happenings someone may cancel and a place

opens up.

Our workshops are held at the Westminster Village Clubhouse – 5200 Black-

pool. It is a lovely venue with lots of light and space. Please bring your, lunch,

snacks, drinks, project supplies and extension cords. The workshop starts

promptly at 9 AM.

Any questions? See us at the Workshop Table or contact us at:

Marie Blash: 714-775-8004; [email protected] ; Justine Gentile: 714-962-8447;

[email protected]. Hope to see you at a workshop soon!

Marie and Justine

May your

sorrows be

patched and

your joys

quilted.

The Basketeers Say Thanks

Thank you for all your donations. Your treasures are greatly appreciated—we

either save them for the next baskets or put them right away into the current

beautiful baskets. Our tickets are still $1.00 for 2 tickets $5.00 for 12 tickets.

With your help we made $148.00 which helps the Guild. Next month we will

be making the baskets with back to school colors — Fall & Autumn colors—

so please dig thru your stash and help us fill our baskets. August winners were

God, grant me the

wisdom to accept

the fabric I can-

not return, cour-

age to just change

the ugly blocks I

can, and the

knowledge to un-

derstand that my

stash trash can

be someone else’s

treasured bar-

gain.

Thank you from the 3

-1 Marines for all the

school supplies. They

had a truck full. Also, a

thank you from Words of

Comfort, Hope and

Promise. At the beach

party held at Camp Pen-

dleton we were able to

give out 63 baby quilts to

new moms & dads with

children under 2 years of

age and expecting moms

& dads. They were so

appreciative. Some had a

hard time deciding on a

quilt. WOW! Forty-nine

pillowcases came in and

35 went out for comple-

tion. Please get the pil-

lowcases back at the Sep-

tember meeting as they

will be given to the foster

children at their picnic on

September 19th. We want

to be sure they have plenty

this year.

We still need quilts

for boys and veterans. The

vet’s quilts do not need to

be red, white & blue, just

masculine. Maybe, if you

have UFO of blocks that

you can put together and

we will get them

quilted. We have Christ-

mas stocking kits ready to

be put together. Please

save those Hobbs batting

bar codes and the Tuscany

Collection inserts. We do

go through a lot of bat-

ting. Thanks for all the

quilts and tops that came

in. We really appreciate the

efforts of the ladies of this

guild!

Philanthropy Really Delivers!

Lost and Found:

A Zip lock bag filled with

Raw Edge Circles on

Squares was left behind at

the August guild meeting.

Please see Ellen Roman to

be reunited with your sew-

ing treasures.

Bus Trip Coordinator Needed:

Road to California Bus trip for January 2011 is

right around the corner. Rose Viola has had to

step down for personal reasons. We are in desper-

ate need of a volunteer to organize and schedule

the trip. Preparations need to begin taking place

as booking the bus, contacting Road for advance

tickets, sign-ups and collection of fees should begin

in October. Should no one step forward, there will

be no bus trip which would leave about 50 ladies

behind. See Ellen Roman or call 949-642-4373.

3-1 Marine Rep-

resentative Dave

Sullivan thanked

the Guild for their

generosity, and

then tried to fit all

this stuff in his

van!

―A Patchwork of Quilts‖ Quilt Show –

November 5 and 6, 2010 We are only a couple of months away from the Quilt Show in November and

the committee is moving forward with much enthusiasm. On Show days, it

takes many hands to pull it all together. Justine Gentile and

Mary Stockard are coordinating the volunteers in the following areas:

Hanging the Quilts Take Down of Quilts

Admissions Door Prizes

The Patchwork General Store Vendor Assistance

White Glove Ticket sales for Jo’s Girls (quilt)

Ticket sales for Opportunity Baskets and for the sewing machine

Ticket sales for the Opportunity Quilt

Thank you to all of you who signed up at the meeting and if you haven’t

signed up yet, please sign up at the next meeting in September or call Justine to

indicate which area you’ll be available to help and on what day you prefer to

volunteer. As we approach the show date, you’ll be contacted by the Chairper-

son as to specifics on time, etc.

The deadline for your show entry is September 13, so complete your form,

indicate your category and include a picture. Please send or turn in your Entry

form to Merci Apodaca. All information is indicated on the Entry form included

in the Newsletter or on our website.

We (Linda and Joyce) are continuing to take sign ups for the quilt Appraiser,

Julia Zgliniec. She will appraise your quilt while at the show. If you have a quilt

of some value, it is important to have it appraised, especially for insurance pur-

poses. The cost is $25 for a verbal evaluation and $50 for a written appraisal

( cash or check payable to Julia).

We are looking forward to a fun show and without you, it wouldn’t be possible.

Please let us know if you have any additional suggestions or comments.

Happy Quilting!

Look for Some

Great Stuff at the

General Store!

What a wonderful re-

sponse we have had to our

―scrap‖ collection. There

are some wonderful fab-

rics in the stash – some

large pieces and some

smaller. If you are look-

ing for just the right piece

to finish a project or

smaller pieces for appli-

qué, this will be the place

to shop. There are cottons,

flannels and other fabrics

to choose from. Thank

you to everyone who has

donated. A special thank

you as well to everyone

who has made or is mak-

ing those special items for

the shelves of our General

Store. Please keep bring-

ing in your items. The

earlier we get them the

better so we can organize

and price everything.

Your handmade items,

gently used or unused

quilting patterns, fabric

scraps, antique blocks and

fabrics can be turned in to

us any time until the Octo-

ber guild meeting.
