From the Principal

Dear Johnians and Well-wishers,

I am happy to present the update on the Educational support programme for the displaced and needy children, covering the year 2015. I thank God and all of you for another successful year for the college and the programme, which continues to be immensely beneficial to the children affected by war.

The Needy and Displaced Students Sponsorship program achieved another milestone when 4 of the students from this program were admitted to Madras Christian College to pursue their respective degrees (Page-16). Their successful completion of studies in addition to their extra curricular activities and conduct at St. John's College enabled them to secure admission at MCC.

Out of the 773 displaced children (361 boarders and 412 day scholars)admitted to SJC since 2009, 452 children (270 boarders + 182 day scholars) have left school to date, to resettle in Vanni under the Government resettlement programme. The education support programme currently supports 321 children (91 boarders + 230 day scholars) at present.

Under this programme, St John’s College, with support of the old boys and well-wishers in Sri Lanka and abroad, provides facilities for necessary for curricular and co-curricular programmes for these students. The children in the hostels are provided with materials for their day-to-day living and entertainment in addition to this. The students continue to flourish in the stimulating environment, and accomplish remarkable achievements in various fields, as the college provides numerous opportunities for development in all areas of student life. Equal importance is given to the physical, spiritual and emotional well- being of the children, and physical and psychological evaluations are done periodically and appropriate assistance provided accordingly.

All of these have helped the children in recovering from consequences of the war, and we are very thankful to our old boys and well-wishers for making this possible.

Stage VI of the programme, provision of educational support to the needy children in Vanni, continues to progress successfully as well. Under this programme, tuition facilities are provided to the children in Tharmapuram, Shanthapuram and Thaneeroottru in the Vanni Area. A total of 91 children attend these classes at present. Stage VII, We still believe that the hill country students need our helping hand. 06 students are supported with the hostel facilities. We seek your continuous support to support the needy children in hill country.

The successful administration of this programme would not have been possible without the unstinted support of our old boys and well-wishers. With your assistance, we will continue to provide the educational and other facilities needed by these students until they graduate from St. John’s College, bringing credit to our Alma Mater.

May God bless you,

Thank you,

Sincerely yours, Rev. N.J.Gnanaponrajah Principal, St. John’s College.

Stage VII – Educational Support to needy children in the Hill – country

We have already made considerable progress in this area, but the cry of the needy

boys and girls in the hill-country reminds us that there is still much work to be done.

Morbray Girls’ College in Kandy, too, like St. John’s is in much need of financial

support. Given the right sponsorship and attention, we sincerely believe that both

schools can continue to progress in meeting the needs of those children. Currently we

are helping 06 hill-country boys in our school with hostel facilities.

Academic and Sports Achievements of Displaced Children – Term 3, 2015

Some students are generally weak in their studies partly because they are still finding it

difficult to adjust to normal routine life. A few of them have difficulties in learning owing to

trauma. However, they fully participate in all the co-curricular activities and benefit from the

various facilities offered by the College.
