DISPOSITIONS ARE…

Students:• Attitudes

AASL STANDARDS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY LEARNER

“Dispositions can be taught by structuring assignments and learning environments….”

AND

“...assessed through documentation that proves the student has followed the behavior during the learning process.” (AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner, 2009, 8).

DISPOSITIONS & THE AASL STANDARDS FOR THE 21ST-CENTURY LEARNER

The AASL embeds student dispositions within the standards. They include:

• Initiative, curiosity, and engagement — pose questions and venture beyond fact gathering

• Creativity and flexibility — use multiple resources and formats • Adaptability — change their focus and questions based on newly

discovered information • Resilience — adjust strategies when results are not satisfactory and

continue experimenting with different options to achieve desired outcomes

• Productivity —plan strategically, clarify goals, establish reasonable deadlines, and work efficiently

• Openness —seek and respect divergent perspectives and points of view • Social responsibility and collaboration —contribute to exchanges of

questions and ideas in teams ( Harada & Yoshina, 2010, 120)

STUDENT DISPOSITIONS…• Are developed over time

Students need time to practice responsibility and positive behaviors through various opportunities.

• Are not assessed through grade-level benchmarksWhat motivates one student, will not motivate another.

• Are modeledLMS must model the dispositions they want the student to demonstrate

LMS must create opportunities where students can demonstrate and develop their dispositions

• Are periodically assessed by the student Life long learning requires the students to be self-aware and self-reflective.

“…there must be times when learners step back to thoughtfully reflect on what’s happening, why it’s happening, and how they feel about the experience.”

( Harada & Yoshina, 2010)
