This publication covers the Apple App Store for iPhone, Apple App Store for iPad, GoogleAndroid Market, Nokia Ovi Store, BlackBerry App World, Windows Phone 7 Marketplace
and Amazon Appstore for September 2011. This months report focuses on the 2011
best global brands and how they perceive the fragmented app store space. We have
cited the Interbrand 2011 Best Global Brands report as the source for the top global
brands for the purpose of this report.
The major findings are:
Ninety-one percent of the top brands (as defined by the Interbrand 2011 Best Global
Brands report) have a presence in at least one of the major app stores. This is
a significant increase compared to 18 months ago when only 51% of the brands
published or licensed an application.
Brands have realized that publishing applications in the various app stores offers a
viable channel to promote their brand, reach consumers, and for a subset of brands
sell content. This is especially true of companies in the media, business services,
and automotive industries who actively use app stores as a way to distribute their
content.
Based on the rank of each brand and when looking at brackets of ten applications
at a time, our research reveals that the brands that ranked highest in the 2011
Interbrand Best Global Brands report have more presence in the different app stores
in terms of the volume of applications.
Brands are heavy publishers with 24 applications on average per brand, although
this is biased due to a few large publishers (e.g. Disney and Sony). The number of
applications per brand without these two brands is still high with 15 applications
on average.
Looking at specific app stores, we see that the Apple App Store for iPhone is by far
the most popular app store for the top 100 global brands. Opposed to this, these
brands appear to believe that they do not need to have a presence on the Nokia(Symbian / Java) platform given the low number of brands (six) publishing on that
platform.
The Google Android Market and the Apple App Store for iPad are both increasingly
seen as good app stores for brands to promote their visibility and reach consumers.
Most brands in the top 100 are not looking to make money in the app stores, as
nearly all of the applications associated with these brands are available for free.
Only a limited number of brands (27% of the publishers with 32% of the applications)
have a strategy to actually make money directly via the app store, including but not
limited to Disney, Adobe and Thomson Reuters.

There are companies listed among the 100 most valuable brands in the 2011 Interbrand
Best Global Brands report that also own an app store, e.g. Apple, Google, Microsoft and
Nokia (included in this research). For those brands that have their own app store, the
applications in their respective app store have been disregarded, e.g., the presence of
Microsoft in Windows Phone 7 Marketplace is not taken into account. Of the 100 brands,
nine do not have a presence in any appstore with the exception of their own.
MOST BRANDS RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF
HAVING A PRESENCE IN AT LEAST ONE APP STORE
Brands have to carefully manage their presence in all channels in order to distinguish
their goods or services from those of their competitors. One would expect brands to beactive in app stores given the continued growth of smartphone use particularly among
young adults in the western world. Based on our research, the graph below reveals that
nearly all of the 100 major brands as defined by Interbrand have a presence in at least
one of the app stores per our research, e.g. Apple App Store for iPhone, Apple App
Store for iPad, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store, BlackBerry App World, Windows
Phone 7 Marketplace and the Amazon App Store.
THE TOP BRANDS ARE MORE EAGER TO PUBLISH APPLICATIONS
Based on the rank of each brand and when looking at brackets of ten brands, our
research reveals that the brands that ranked highest in the 2011 Interbrand Best Global
Brands report also have more presence in the different app stores in terms of the number
of published applications.

The high number of applications per brand stands out when looking at the averages -
24 applications per brand. This is mainly due to the large amount of applications that
are published (or licensed by) Disney with 628 across all app stores. Another brand that
publishes a lot of applications (and causes the spike in 31 - 40 bracket) is Sony with 281
applications that are mainly linked to movies and music. The graph below shows the topfive most active brands across all the app stores.
We can also observe from the graph that about half of the brands had a presence in an
app store in March 2010, while 91% of the top 100 brands have at least one application
in one of the major app stores today. Moreover, brands now tend to publish more
applications as well especially within the last six months when a large number of
brand-related applications have been added. This shows that brands are increasingly
viewing app stores as a way to promote their visibility and reach consumers.

Proportion publishing in app store Proportion not publishing
The Apple App Store for iPhone is the largest store in terms of size, and this is also
reflected in the number of brands that are active in this store: 86% of the top brands
have a presence in the Apple App Store for iPhone. The next most popular app store for
brands to publish their applications is the Apple App Store for iPad with 66%, followed
by Google Android Market with 59%, and BlackBerry App World with 26%.
APPLE IS THE APP STORE OF CHOICE FOR BRANDS
Most brands in the top 100 are not looking to make money in the app stores, as nearly
all of the applications associated with these brands are available for free. Only a limited
subset (27% of the publishers with 32% of the applications) have a strategy to actuallymake direct money via the app store, including but not limited to, Disney, Adobe and
Thomson Reuters.
The most popular categories that brands have chosen to publish their applications in
are the Personalization and Lifestyle categories, or in other words, leisure related
categories. Another category where brands have focused their applications efforts is
the Business category. This can be explained because companies with a focus towards
software such as HP, SAP and IBM are also listed among the top 100 global brands.

This report reveals that the 2011 best global brands have realized over the past 18
months that app stores offer a viable channel to promote their brand, reach consumers,
and for a subset of brands sell content. This is especially true for media companies
who actively use app stores as a way to distribute their content. The media companies
featured in the Interbrand 2011 Best Global Brands report count 247 applications on
average, per media company listed. Other industries that have embraced app stores are
business services with 31 per company, and automotive with 29 per company. Naturally,
the computer software companies are also active in the different app stores with 36 per
company.
Looking at the app stores, the Apple App Store is clearly the most popular among
brands: 86% of the top 100 brands choose to publish applications for the iPhone, and
66% choose to publish applications for the iPad. However, looking at the growth of
Android and iPad in the past year, brands increasingly adopt a multi-platform strategy.It should also be noted that nine percent (including Kleenex, HSBC and Burberry) of the
brands do not publish in any app store.
This graph clearly shows that the Nokia Ovi platform seems to be of less importance
for the 2011 top 100 global brands, as the number of brands publishing in the Nokia
Ovi Store is the same for the larger part of the time span covered in this report. The
relatively high number of applications published by brands that are in the Amazon
Appstore (14 applications) is surprising given the store has only been around for threemonths. Only 25% of the applications that brands offer in the Google Android Market
are also available concurrently in the Amazon Appstore. A quick win for these brands
would also be to publish their app in the Amazon Appstore since it is also an app store
for Android.
GOOGLE ANDROID MARKET IS GAINING GROUND WITH BRANDS
The Google Android Market is closing in on the Apple App Store for iPhone in terms of
the number of available applications. This can also be seen when looking at the number
of available brands who have started to publish on the Android platform over time. Theremarkable growth of the Apple App Store for iPad also stands out.
