EXOTIC TONEWOODS:

The Breedlove Wood Library offers an extraordinary assortment of exotic tonewoods. The combined tonal characteristics of these woods produce an awe-inspiring spectrum of sounds. Breedlove luthiers pair back and side tonewoods with carefully selected soundboards to craft specific sound perfectly suited to your playing style and musical preferences. For example, the Breedlove sinker redwood/ziricote Exotic Fingerstylist concert delivers warmth with punch; the Adirondack/quilted maple Masterclass 12 String fills a performance hall with a wall of rich, deep sound; and the Adirondack/Brazilian rosewood Exotic Flatpicker dreadnought will stand out no matter how many instruments are on stage.

BREEDLOVE ASYMMETRICAL HEADSTOCK:

The asymmetrical headstock is featured on CM, Concert, Auditorium, and 12-String body shapes. This headstock isn’t just a pretty shape – it’s specifically designed to keep the strings in a straight, even line from the nut to the tuning pegs. The result is even tension, stable tuning, and ease of alternate tuning.

BREEDLOVE NECK DESIGN:

Breedlove guitar necks feature a slimmer neck profile which enables comfortable play, even with smaller hands. Unlike traditional dovetail neck joints that require major surgery for a neck re-set, it is easy to adjust the play action and neck angle with the Breedlove bolt-on neck and single-action truss rod. The hand-rubbed, semi-gloss Breedlove neck finish contributes to ideal playability – the finish process alone takes three days, including precise finish coat applications, fine sanding, and hand buffing and rubbing.

It’s no secret that Breedlove instruments have a unique look, feel, and sound. When it comes to the look of a Breedlove, what may appear to be simply aesthetically innovative design is actually a triumph of science and sound engineering. Early on, Breedlove re-engineered the acoustic guitar by re-envisioning the ways each and every component contributes to the overall sound. It’s what goes into a Breedlove that truly delivers unparalleled distinctively crafted sound. Creating purpose-built sound is no easy task, but as you browse the coming pages, you’ll see various combinations of the following elements, artfully combined in each model to create your signature sound.

BREEDLOVE BRIDGE TRUSS (BBT):

Select models feature the Breedlove Bridge Truss – most commonly the Concert and Auditorium shapes found on pages 24 - 35. The BBT reduces tension on thesoundboard of the guitar, so the top wood is able tovibrate more freely, producing remarkable sustain, balance, and clarity. The BBT also allows for a thinner graduated top, thereby allowing Breedlove craftsmen to bring out the optimal sound from the top wood without sacrificing structural stability. Relieving much of the stringtension from the bridge prevents “bridge belly,”ensuring top stability for decades.

BREEDLOVE GRADUATED TOPS:

Breedlove graduated tops, featured on select models, contribute stunning balance from lows to highs. How? Graduated tops are slightly thicker on the treble side, balancing the higher energy treble frequencies with the lower energy bass frequencies traveling through the thinner bass side. The result: clearer, cleaner highs and stable, resonant lows.

Guitar strings can exert up to 230 pounds of pull from the nut to the bridge. Traditional methods for preventing top bowing at the bridge usually involve heavy internal bracing and thicker tops. The BBT compensates for this pressure in an innovative way: The BBT is mounted to the bridge from the inside and is connected into the tail block of the guitar, pulling downward on the underside of the bridge to distribute some of the tension, relieving pressure on the top. The resulting tonal effect on BBT-equipped guitars is more resonance and livelier sound with enhanced overtones.

BREEDLOVE PINLESS BRIDGE:

The Breedlove Pinless Bridge helps maintain the integrity of the top by eliminating the need for six drilled string holes. The fewer holes in your soundboard, the moreevenly the sound wave can move across the interior, without any loss of energy. The Breedlove Pinless Bridge also provides a gentler string-break angle from the bridge to the top of the saddle, reducing saddle strain. This innovative bridge also makes string changes a breeze, especially on 12 strings. Plus, you’ll never again have to worry about lost, worn-out, or broken bridge pins.

Because no two soundboards are exactly the same, Breedlove craftsmen evaluate each top for stiffness and density, and then graduate it accordingly. The amount of graduation is customized for each individual instrument. The top is sanded to the precise graduated thickness to achieve optimal flexibility and stiffness. This hands-on process is one of the major contributors to the Breedlove sound.

In 1973, while on a surf trip, Kim Breedlove visited the town of Paracho, Mexico looking to

buy a mandolin. He got the mandolin and a lot more: In that little town bustling with gifted

luthiers, Kim realized he wanted to spend his life pursuing the craft of luthiery.

For 40 years, mandolins have been Kim’s passion, so as you can imagine, they’re a very

THE F BODY SHAPEKim Breedlove reinterpreted the traditional Florentine mandolin in the F body – the headstock, weight, size, and volume are very similar to the Florentine shape. It features a unique retro-inspired peg head and a pronounced scroll on the bass upper bout. The rim depth is shallower, and the overall top arc is slightly com-pressed for a distinct throaty sound and a powerful bark that will particularly appeal to bluegrass players.

THE K BODY SHAPEThe K body is born from Kim Breedlove’s imagination. Inspired by the CM guitar shape, Kim set out to design a shape and sound that respected the history of the mandolin, while simultaneously expanding the aural and aesthetic boundaries with a touch of the avant-garde. The result is Breedlove’s iconoclastic modern mandolin featuring an asymmetrical peg head and a defined bass-side upper bout. Kim engineered the K shape to create a sound that goes beyond expectations. With slightly more internal volume than a traditional body shape, the K body delivers a big, open sound with serious boom and sustain, for an experience that will delight forward-thinking mandolin players.

THE O BODY SHAPEThe O body is Breedlove’s version of the revered and time-honored teardrop shape. This compact shape has slightly less internal spatial volume than the K and F bodies, yielding very clear, distinct notes. Comfortable and accessible, this is the ideal everyday mando shape. The Breedlove ukulele collection is driven by Kim Breedlove’s personal passion.

His long-standing infatuation with ukuleles is born from his connection to Hawaii –

every year, he spends several weeks in the middle of the Pacific in the lush island

landscapes, overlooking powerful pristine seas.

Kim toiled for years over early Breedlove prototypes to engineer the perfect uke sound.

Originally, Breedlove ukes were available only by custom order, but by 2010, Kim had

perfected the distinctively crafted sound in his signature model, and Breedlove released the

Kim Breedlove Signature Ukulele as the first production uke.

The Breedlove ukulele sound – the crystal-clear brilliance and lively “chunk” – is a result of

the ultra-lightweight design, five-fan bracing, and minimal hand-applied finish. All Breedlove
