Gibb Family Distinguished Alumni Award Bios

1995 – Robert R. Staples graduated from University College in 1972 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He is the founding chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council (DAC) and first recipient of the UC/SCS Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award, now known as the Gibb Family Distinguished Alumni Award. Bob serves Village Bank as Vice President, Director of Human Resources. 1996 – William E. Brazier graduated from University College in 1976 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in marketing. 1997 – John M. Plunkett graduated from University College in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. 1998 – Charles K. Trible graduated from University College in 1968 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in accounting and from University of Richmond School of Law in 1971. 1999 – Earnest A. Huband graduated from University College in 1968 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in accounting, and again in 1977 with a Master of Business Administration in finance. In addition to serving as National and Richmond Chapter President of the National Association of Accountants, Huband taught in the University of Richmond business school and University College, where he was recognized as the Outstanding Lecturer in 1982 and 1984. 2002 – Fenton N. Hord graduated from SCS in 1970 with a Bachelor in Business Administration degree. In addition to his work for the Eskimo Pie Corporation and Carolina Builders Corporation, in 1993 Hord became president and chief executive officer of Carolina Holdings, Inc., the largest supplier of lumber and building materials to professional contractors in the United States. 2003 – Sarah Gunn graduated from University College in 1981 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, and went on to be a founding of the SCS Dean’s Advisory Council. Gunn was also served on the board of the Muscarelle Museum, is past president and board member of the Merchants Square Association, is a member of the Senior Executive Resource Corps of the William and Mary School of Business Administration, and was a board member of the Williamsburg Area Chamber of Commerce. 2004 – Thomas W. Pearson was part of the first graduating class of University College in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. In 2002, the SPCS announced the inception of the Thomas and Doris Pearson Endowed Scholarship, given in memory of Pearson’s wife, to provide financial support to future SPCS students. 2005 – Valerie J. Agnew graduated from the SCS in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in human resource management, and again in 2005 with a Master of Liberal Arts degree with a focus on twenty-first century leaders. Agnew is past president of the School of Continuing Studies Alumni Association, serves on the school’s Dean’s Advisory Council, and, in 2004, SPCS announced the creation of the Edward G. Cooney Endowed Scholarship, named in honor of Agnew’s older son, to provide financial support to future SPCS students.

2006 – Andrew J. Gibb graduated from SCS in 1983 with a Bachelor of Applied Studies degree in real estate. Gibb served on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the School of Continuing Studies, the Third District Committee for the Virginia State Bar, and is the only member of the National Association of Realtors to hold each of the following designations: CPM (Certified Property Manager), CCIM, ALC (Accredited Land Consultant), and SIOR (dual member, Office and Industrial Designations and Society of Industrial and Office Realtors). 2007 – Connie E. Harvey graduated from SCS in 1995 with a Bachelor of Applied Studies degree in human resource management, and a Graduate Certificate in human resource management in 2004. She is a member of the International Association for Human Resource Information Management and the Society for Human Resource Management. 2008 – Fred Itzkowitz graduated from SCS with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1975 and a Master of Commerce degree in 1976. A longtime supporter of the School of Professional and Continuing Studies, Itzkowitz endowed the Itzkowitz Family Distinguished Faculty Award in 2005. 2009 – W. Joseph Winston graduated from SCS in 1971 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in business and marketing. Winston has served as former chair on the Dean’s Advisory Council, and he and his wife, Diana, established a scholarship for students in the Teacher Licensure Program. 2010 – Mary R. Evans graduated from SCS in 2002 with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree, and went on to serve as an adjunct instructor at SCS and the School of Arts and Sciences. Evans has also been an active board member with the School of Continuing Studies Alumni Association, serving as president from 2007 to 2009. 2011 – Scott E. Strickler graduated from SCS in 1987 with a Bachelor of Applied Studies, and served as the current chair of the School of Continuing Studies’ Dean’s Advisory Council. In addition to his work with the University of Richmond, Strickler served as treasurer of Robins Insurance Agency, and served on several boards, including the Richmond Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Tuckahoe YMCA, and past president of the Western Henrico Rotary Club. 2012 – Patricia H. Gallagher graduated with honors from SCS in 1997 with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree. In addition to participating in classes with SPCS’s Think Again and Osher Institute, Gallagher chairs the School of Continuing Studies’ Dean’s Advisory Council and serves as the senior vice president of Eastern Virginia Bank. 2013 – Thomas W. Winfree graduated from University College in 1977 with a Bachelor of Commerce. Winfree has been a Virginia banker for more than 40 years and has served as Chief Executive Officer and President of Village Bank and Trust Financial Corp. since its inception. Winfree is a founding member and Director of the Families of the Wounded Fund, Inc. and serves on many boards with in the Richmond community.
