What is Sheltering-In-Place?
Seeking Immediate Shelter– Building (home, church, office, mall, store) – Vehicle (Car, truck, bus, train)
The most important thing is to follow the instructions of local authorities and know what to do if you are advised to shelter-in-place.
Shelter-In-Place What Could Happen?
Interstate/Highway Accident
Train Derailment
Terrorist Attack
Manufacturing or Facility Incident
Agricultural Incident
Sheltering-In-PlaceHow Will I Know ?
The order to Shelter in place would likely come from any of the following:
– Local Public Officials– County Emergency Management Officials– Law Enforcement– Fire Fighters
An emergency alert notification would be made via any of the following:
– Television/Radio – Telephone – Door-to-Door

Plastic Sheeting Bath Towels First Aid Kit Water Fresh Batteries Non-Perishable Food Flashlight Duct Tape Battery-powered radio
Shelter-In-Place 4 Steps to Remember
1. Move people and pets inside.
2. Close and lock all doors & windows.
3. Turn off ventilation systems.
4. Turn on a radio or TV for further information & instructions.
Shelter-In-PlaceStep 1: Move Inside
Quickly move everyone indoors and do not use elevators.
Pre-select an interior room with few windows. If possible, select a room that has access to water and restroom facilities.
Shelter-In-PlaceStep 2: Close and Lock All Doors
and Windows
Seal off all doors, windows, ceiling vents, and other sources of outside air.
Place a wet towel at the base of the door to cover the openings. Secure them in place with tape.
If dangerous fumes have entered your home, place a wet cloth over your nose and mouth.
Shelter-In-Place Step 3: Turn off Ventilation System
Turn off all heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems; turn the inlets to the “closed” position.
If caught at the scene of an accident:– Close all windows, vents, air conditioning, and ventilation
systems.
– Dial 9ll.
– Move clear of the accident and try to stay upwind of the incident.
Shelter-In-PlaceStep 4: Turn on Radio or TV
Stay Calm.
Listen to the TV or radio for further information or instructions.
Stay off the telephone unless there is an emergency.
Shelter-In-Place “Don’ts”
Call the school or try to pick up your children.
Leave your shelter until the “all clear” signal is sounded.
