ENCREDIBLE TOASTMASTERS BOOSTS
MEMBERSHIP WITH GUEST LUNCHEONSGlenn Conrad, CC Denver Division Governor
Encredible Toastmasters, acorporate club at Encana Oiland Gas, has found a recipefor strong membership with 38members and counting. Thatrecipe on February 2nd includ-ed sour cream, guacamole, great event marketing, and
company support.
Several Encana employeesattended the guest luncheonand experienced their firstToastmasters meeting. En-credible Toastmasters con-ducted a typical meeting withprepared speeches from clubmember, Ron Engele and Divi-sion Governor, Glenn Conrad.Throughout the meeting, speakers took extra care toexplain their roles to guestsand highlight the benefits of
joining a Toastmasters club.
To market the event, the clubadded a link to Encana's inter-nal website announcing a freelunch for guests. The link in-cluded registration which auto-matically plugged the date intothe employee's Outlook Calen-dar. Club members alsospread the word and invited co
-workers in their departments.
At the meeting, guests weregiven membership packetsthat included an application aswell as materials answeringcommon questions aboutToastmasters. EncredibleToastmasters President, MarkDarling, noted in his closingremarks that Encana coversthe cost for dues. He alsoexplained to potential newmembers how Toastmasterscan help them meet develop-ment goals included in theirEmployee High PerformanceContracts. Mark describeshow this benefits both the new
member and the club:
“We have found placing distin-guished club program goals inhigh performance contracts tobe an effective tool to ensuremembers achieve their goals. This results in employees notonly being accountable to theclub for meeting their goals, but to their supervisors. Thisalso makes their supervisoraware of the progress they aremaking through Toastmastersand helps to gain their sup-
port.
“We use the time of year thatemployees are writing theirhigh performance contracts asan ideal time to recruit newmembers. During this timeemployees are defining theirdevelopmental objectives forthe year and are more recep-tive to trying something new tobetter themselves. The siren’scall of free food is a powerfultool for getting visitors to dropin and see what Toastmasters
is all about.”
Putting together a guest lunch-eon also provided leadershipopportunities for club mem-bers. New member and guestluncheon organizer, Bill Sum-row, described the experience,“Planning the lunch was afantastic experience! My fellowclub members helped out tre-mendously and all of the logis-tics went smoothly. I think it'simportant to host guests peri-odically as a way to bring newfaces, new experiences andnew talent to the club. If any ofthe guests join our club will be
stronger for sure!”
The great thing about a recipe
is that it can be reproduced.
Use Encredible Toastmasters'
recipe to boost membership in
your own club!

Why do we raise funds for the conference? Great Question!!!
We want more members to be able to enjoy the experience so we set the price lower and ask clubs to help
defray the cost. We raised $3,000 from 23 contributors at the Fall Conference. If you don’t want to give a
basket, we’ll be happy to accept a cash donation. All contributions will be given credit in the program.

TOASTMASTERS TESTIMONIALS
Hello Toastmaster Teammates! Want to
Step up and Coach?
A coach is a Toastmaster member whois not currently a member of the coacheligible club – any club with 12 or fewer
members.
The club members and the coach meetto explore what the club membersexpect from the club. The group (clubmembers with guidance from theCoach) then develops a plan to meetthose expectations and achieveDistinguished Club status. Most clubsthat have had coaches have found thatthe coaches provide beneficial insight.Exploring what the club membersexpect from the club sets the stage forformulating a plan that the clubmembers get behind and promote inthe community. Members and
coaches deepen their communication, leadership and teamwork skills andenjoy the success of helping the clubachieve Distinguished status. Thebenefit is that the club gains membersand defines it mission and program. The Coach gets credit toward AdvancedLeader Silver on the Road to
Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM).
If you are interested in becoming acoach or finding a coach for your clubplease contact the club-coachingprogram [email protected]. Oneof the District Coaching Co-Chairs, LindaRhea or Niki Moore, will contact you toexplore how the program can help you
or your club.

Here’s an idea I am excited to
share. Not a new idea individually,
yet together it could be powerful!
The Erie Express ors Toastmasters Club
has started a campaign to share why
Toastmasters is a great value and how
it’s helped our members.
After each meeting we will be posting a
“Toastmasters Testimonial” on our club
Facebook page to promote the club and
Toastmasters.
It’s fast and easy to do with a digital
camera or an iPad2. Even I can do it.
Here is a link to our first posting: http://
www.facebook.com/video/video.php?
v=3195987299536
We also will post it on our Twitter page.
https://twitter.com/#!/ErieExpressors
(Thanks to Karen Dittman and Sarah
LaBarre who recorded the first two.)
Here’s a challenge. Imagine, if every
club in the district started to flood the
web with testimonials, it would help all
clubs gain greater exposure to Toast-
masters and help recruit membership.
May I suggest you share this with your
clubs and encourage them to start their
own PR campaign? ▪
Are you up for the challenge?

TRAVELING BEEBradley Beck, DTM
Confidence radiates from you. Whenyou speak, a simple silence falls uponthe audience. Your hands are justright, your voice inflection akin to Mar-tin Luther King, and your expressionconveys the message you will share.Excitement, not fear, wells up insideas if breaking through a dam. You rel-ish the feeling and feel a sense of ac-complishment like no other.
When you joined Toastmasters, didyou know that your commitment wouldtake you beyond the mediocrity foundin many of your life experiences? Didyou know Toastmasters would pushyou and challenge you beyond a pointof accomplishment to a point of excel-lence that would envelop everythingyou do from now on?
About excellence, World ChampionSpeaker Dana LaMon said, “it beginswhen you shake off mediocrity andcommit to excel” and “commitment is
not the destination.”
As you ponder your success uponreaching your CC or CL, does a voicedeep in your being wonder ‘whatcomes next’? Advanced ToastmasterClubs come next, as they bring per-spective to what you have done andwhat is left to be achieved.
Advanced Clubs provide a network ofopportunities and diversity found onlyby congregating with toastmasterswho have traveled your same road.Toastmasters who are now ready toreach for a greater foundation, onethat will strengthen and nurture theplace they have already reached. InAdvanced Clubs you find a venue thatsees no boundaries, yet values theToastmaster mission. It is this placewhere mediocrity is wiped from yourslate and excellence becomes yourmantra.
The four Advanced Clubs in District 26are experiments in finding that higher
level of excellence.
“Now is the best time to commit toexcellence because then is gone andwhen may never come.”

A Bee is a wonderful creature toobserve. It flies from flower to flower, searching for nectar making the flowerand the Bee stronger. Like a Bee, cross-pollination especially of ideas also
makes Toastmasters clubs stronger.
Keeping my public speaking skills sharpis a challenge when I am away onbusiness. I often will seek out aToastmasters meeting on theToastmasters International website forthe city I am visiting and find a club
meeting that fits my schedule.
Recently, my busy business travelseason began. I had the good fortune tovisit five clubs around the country, twoin California, CoastmastersToastmasters in Dana Point andAnaheim Breakfast Club. In Oregon, Ivisited Cascade Toastmasters in
Eugene. In Texas, I visited ExecutiveToastmasters in Dallas. And finally, inFlorida, I visited Highrisers
Toastmasters in Tampa.
All these clubs had engaging websitesthat invited guests to visit. I wasattracted by photographs of membersposted on their websites and theirmeeting schedules were up to date. Atall these meetings, I was warmlygreeted and introduced to other clubmembers. This gave me an instantconnection which made me feelwelcome. At each visit, I was invited toshare my observations and impressions
of the meetings.
The members were genuinely interestedin finding out how their club was similarto or different from mine. They wantedto be evaluated on what they did well
and how they could improve. I alsocame away from each meeting with ahost of ideas to share with my clubs toimprove and enhance our gatherings. In some instances I even received a
complimentary breakfast.
Visiting other clubs is enjoyable, enlight-ening and an added value of being aToastmaster. Visiting other clubs out ofstate gives me a sense of having anextended group of friends wherever Igo. My sales calls on the days I visitedthese meetings was superior. I havefound this experience helps me to learnnew ideas, keeps my skills up andmakes me a better speaker. Bee ad-venturous. Bee courageous. Bee a Beeand cross-pollinate when you travel forbusiness or pleasure. You'll Bee gladyou did.

This issue started with anarticle by Glenn Conradthat showed a powerful wayto publicize a club, theopen house. Another way topublicize is to hold a well-
organized, well run contest.
A contest shows off yourmembers at their best. These are the same peoplewho however many weeks, months or years agostruggled through their veryfirst Toastmasters speech. Now they’re competing forrecognition as the best intheir category. Don’t youthink that people who arequestioning their ownability to speak in front ofan audience would want tosee what Toastmasters hasdone for these competitorsand what it can do forthem? All you need to do is
get the word to them.
Sure, the Vice PresidentPublic Relations has theoverall responsibility, buthe or she can do the jobbetter with the committedsupport of other members– you! Not only that, butthree requirements in theCompetent Leadershipmanual can be completedby organizing or chairing aclub contest or PR
campaign.
If your club hasn’t alreadyhad its InternationalSpeech and Table Topicscontests, it should soon. Why not make them apublic relations event? Andwhy not be one of thosewho gets leadership credit?Get with your VP Educationto find out what kind ofhelp is needed for thecontests or with the VPPublic Relations to be part
of the team that gets the
word out.
So why are you still sitting
there?
Four things come not back: thespoken word, the spent arrow, the past, and the neglectedopportunity.
