We welcomed Kristy Grantham and Willow Corless from SMYL Community

Services.

We also welcomed along Bill Rowe for a second visit, I believe a ‘White Card’

may be in the offing.

President Stephen is promoting the upcoming online ‘Club Survey’ encouraging

members to take part, more details shortly.

In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global

polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children.

Rotary has contributed more than $1.7 billion and countless volunteer hours to

immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries.

In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor

governments to contribute more than $7.2 billion to the effort.

President Report

Club Survey:

Questions are being developed and fleshed out. Need to try keep questions short and with

short answers (preferable Yes or No).

Nothing is taboo, and we are trying to cover the full spectrum of the club, membership and its

activities.

Other clubs have chosen to do away with them, so some questions will include:

Sergeants Session – Yes/No?

Grace – Yes /No?

National Anthem Yes/No?

Interest in Fortnightly Meetings Yes/No?

This is NOT to make the decision on this subject, but rather to gauge whether the members

are ‘Open’ to the idea. If the answer is Yes, then a properly structured discussion will need to

be arranged, prior to a formal vote.

The purpose of the survey is to collect the ‘feelings’ of all the members on all aspects of the

club. We need to know where we are failing, where we could do better, how we can engage

members and also where we are going well.

The desired outcome is to have a better understanding of what the members expect from the

club and to set the direction for the club.

There is a ‘spike’ in the process, as I have just been advised that the tool that we were going

to use “Survey Monkey”, is only FREE for 10 questions.

We may have to look at other alternatives to “Survey Monkey” that will allow for the easy

collection of the data whilst preserving anonymity.

Keys: Mike Metcalf has been busy on setting up Keyed-alike padlocks for various items at

the clubhouse. The keys will currently unlock the padlocks at the rear shed, the large white

trailer and the front gate.

Keys were issued to members that required them, as well as to Inner Wheel who meet at our

clubrooms.

Thank you for your efforts Mike, it will make appropriate access much easier going forward.

Port: In keeping with the tradition of a bottle of port for attendance over 90%, President

Stephen has provided a bottle for the evening.

I think we live in a world where the most important thing is daily life: sharing a space with your family, making meals, being with your people. It's not only the idea of privacy, it's the beauty of the moment, at a time in the world when everything goes really fast - too fast. Ana Tijoux

Standing Orders – Review

Standing Orders are adopted annually by the incoming Club Board of Directors (the Board) and

endorsed by the club members.

SO 1: A Standing Order can be placed in Standing Orders on adoption by the Board and a two-

third majority vote of club members.

SO 2: A Standing Order, or a section thereof, may be set aside or amended for a period in any

year, or for the year, on the recommendation of the Board and a simple majority vote of club

members.

SO 3: A Standing Order, or a section thereof, can be removed from Standing Orders on the

recommendation of the Board and a two-third majority vote of club members.

SO 4: Standing Orders will be reviewed annually by the incumbent Board and presented at the

combined incoming/outgoing Board meeting to be held in June each year. On agreement and

adoption by the incoming Board they will be presented to the club members for endorsement

at the earliest convenient club meeting following the Changeover Meeting.

• The future of Wellard Markets continue to be debated.

Markets will be held October & November 2018, with a big event

planned for the Christmas Market in December, City Council

support is anticipated. We can include food vendors supplying alternatives to the food

types offered by existing shops.

Busy Bee on Thursday 2nd

August at the 66 Summerton Road

former home of Andy Valk, now owned by the Rita and Andy Valk Foundation for Kwinana.

The property has been vacant for some time but is now under offer

to rent again.

Work is needed to spruce-up both the interior and garden areas of

the home to ready it for rental.

Ladies from the Frank Konecny Centre will assist.

The Minister of Health of Papua New Guinea officially

launched the outbreak response campaign on 16 July in

Morobe, Madang and Eastern Highlands provinces.

Summary of new viruses this week: advance notification

of one wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case in Afghanistan

in Kunar province. In Nigeria, one new case of circulating

vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) as well as

three confirmed and two advanced notice cVDPV2

positive environmental samples.

Guest Speakers: Christy Grantham & Willow Corless from SMYL

SMYL CC is an Independent, non-government Curriculum and Re-engagement in Education (CARE)

school in Rockingham, WA, offering a creative, personalised, co-educational learning program to

students in years 9-12.

Christy first talked about the services offered by SMYL in the Rockingham/Kwinana area, but her

main focus was to be on a program called ParentsNext.

ParentsNext helps parents with children under 6 to plan and prepare for employment by the time their

children go to school. It now operates in all non-remote areas of Australia.

ParentsNext providers work with parents to help them set education and employment goals, develop a

pathway to achieve their goals and link them to services and activities in the local community.

ParentsNext has been operating in 10 locations since April 2016.

On 2 July 2018, ParentsNext started operating in all non-remote areas of Australia.

ParentsNext participants get help to:

identify education and employment goals

develop a pathway to achieve their goals

combine preparing for work with parenting responsibilities

access activities and services in the local community.

Participants in the Intensive Stream may be able to access a range of other support including a

participation fund, wage subsidies and relocation assistance.

Who is eligible?

Parents may have to participate in ParentsNext if they have:

received Parenting Payment for the last six months

not had employment earnings during this period, and

a child aged under six years.

Centrelink will contact parents who need to participate in ParentsNext and connect them to a local

provider.

Parents who receive Parenting Payment and have a child under six years can volunteer for

ParentsNext if they live in an Intensive Stream location.

Meet the Rotary International World President

Barry and Esther Rassin

President 2018 – 19 Rotary Club of East Nassau

New Providence, Bahamas

Barry Rassin earned an MBA in health and hospital administration from the University of Florida, and is the first fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives in the Bahamas.

He recently retired after 37 years as president of Doctors Hospital Health System and continues as an adviser. He is a lifetime member of the American Hospital Association and has served on several boards, including the Quality Council of the Bahamas, Health Education Council, and Employer’s Confederation.

A Rotarian since 1980, Rassin has served Rotary as director and is vice chair of The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees. He was an RI training leader and the aide to 2015-16 RI President K.R. Ravindran.

Rassin received Rotary's highest honor, the Service Above Self Award, as well as other humanitarian awards for his work leading Rotary’s relief efforts in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake there.

He and his wife, Esther, are Major Donors and Benefactors of The Rotary Foundation.

A young executive was leaving the office at 6pm when he found the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in hand.

"Listen," said the CEO, "this is important, and my secretary has left. Can you make this thing work?"

"Certainly," said the young executive. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button.

"Excellent, excellent!" said the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine. "I just need one copy."

Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an

impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail

and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him ....what? (Oh, man,

this is so bad, it's good) A super callused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.
