Japanese PlanExport Conference
Japanese Ambassador Ryuji Takeuchiwill be the featured speaker at a day-long conference on exports to be heldin Houston September 23 for South-western businessmen interested in boost-ing their trade with Japan.
Sponsored by the U.S.-Japan TradeCouncil and the U.S. Department ofCommerce, the meeting is expected toattract several hundred participants ac-cording to Allen Taylor, the Council’sexecutive secretary. Sessions will beheld in the 500 Jefferson Building audi-torium.
Howard Tellepsen, chairman of theHouston Port Commission, is conferencechairman.
Panels of experts who are alreadysuccessfully dealing with Japan will tellconference delegates how they are sell-ing to the Japanese market, Taylor said.He added that present Japanese plan-ning calls for tripling the amount ofJapanese imports from the U.S. by1970.
Already the leading exporter to Japanof all 50 U.S. states, Texas can still in-crease its trade bv diversification of itsexports and by finding new Japanesemarkets for its goods. Taylor explained.
U.S. exports to Japan have exceededimports from the country for manyyears, Taylor explained, and said some43,000 Texans are employed in in-dustries that export to Japan, which isnearly 10 per cent of all U.S. shipments. He said that if Texas continues to main-tain its current share of the export mar-ket to Japan, 50,000 more jobs will becreated.
