Shark attack: a survivor speaksITs been 13 years, and Sergio Capri (55)can still recall seeing a set of large gillsright beside him.

On 29 July 1999, Capri was fortunateenough to survive a horrific shark attack.

It was around midday when he wentsurfingat theKogelBayCaves, thesamespot were David Lilienfeld (20) was killedlast Thursday. Capri had just caught awave and was paddling out to sea whenhe felt himself moving sideways.

He explains that the shark had grabbedhold of him, with its bottom jaw beneaththe surfboard and his top jaw over his but-tocks. I dont know what happened next,

but all I saw was a lot of blood around me.After the shark released me I rememberseeing his tail moving back out to sea.

His board had snapped, and Capri trieddesperately to paddle to shore. The sharkhad bitten him on the right leg, and hisback above the hip. This is not happen-ing. I dont want to die, are the words herecalls running through his mind.

Another surfer helped him ashore. Par-amedics were called, and he was airliftedto hospital. After five minutes in the heli-copter, Capri had already lost nearly halfhisblood. Everything justworked formethat day, he says with a smile.

Thedescriptionoftheshark, a great white ofaround four or five me-tres in length, is simi-lar to that of Lilien-felds attacker.

Three months laterCapri was back in thewater. He even went surfing again at thespot where he was attacked. Going intothe sea is a chanceyou take. Ivebeensurf-ing for 45 years; the sharks are there, andIve seen many cruise past.

Capri says he cant imagine the traumaLilienfelds loved ones are going through.

Tragedy strikes at seaIT WAS an afternoon intended to havebeen a fun session of surfing, but it endedin tragedy.

Thursday 19 April is a day many willnot forget especially the family andfriends of David Lilienfeld (20) fromCamps Bay, who was killed by a shark.

At around 12:30 that day David, hisbrother Gustav and friend Kirk Morganwent bodyboarding at a popular surfing

spot known as the Caves at Dappat seGat in Kogel Bay.

Provincial police spokesperson colonelAndr Traut says David and Gustav werenext to each other in the water when agreat white shark attacked David.

The shark took hold of the Springbokbodyboarder, dragged him under the wa-ter and bit off his right leg. The brotherpulled David onto his board and broughthim out of the water, says Traut.

Paramedics, however, declared himdead on the scene.

According to a City of Cape Town re-port, eyewitness Matt Marais had beensurfing at the Caves prior to the attack.

He saw two bodyboarders paddling out;minutes later he heard shouting and sawDavid being attacked by the shark.

The shark made three passes at David,Marais said, but only on the third pass didhe see blood in the water.

After the final strike the four- to five-metre-long shark moved away.

Charl Cilliers, manager of ambulanceservices forGordonsBayMedicalRescue, was one of the first paramedics on thescene. He says Gustav and two other by-standers had carried Davids body to therocks. As we got to the body we found hisbrother lying next to him and holdinghim, he says.

We looked for signs of life, but therewas no pulse. There was nothing we coulddo. He was already dead.

Cilliers says Davids right leg had beenbittenoffbelowhiship, andhedsustaineda secondary bite on the hip.

The ultimate cause of Davids death isnot yet known.Cilliers sayshe couldhavedrowned, or died as a result of blood loss.

Dirk Lilienfeld, Davids father, arrivedat the scene shortly thereafter.

Gustav cried a lot but did not say any-thing, says Cilliers. Dirk just wanted tosee his sons face.

    They just held each other.

    Nobodyknows why

MANY have their theories on whythe shark that killed David Lilien-feld was in the area, or why it at-tacked, but no one is entirely sure.

Sarah Titley, Shark Spottersprojectmanager, saysitsnormal forsharks to be near the shore this timeofyear.Spottershaveseenanumberof sharks along the coast all week.

We cant say where the sharkscame from; they were alreadythere, says Titley. She says that, earlier on the day of the attack, aschool of dolphins had been swim-ming in the area, and birds had beenfeeding there. This could have at-tracted the shark.

Asked about the belief that sharkresearch conducted at Seal Island inFalse Bay which involved chum-mingandtaggingsharkshadsome-thing to do with the attack, Titleysays it is highly unlikely.

The chum the researchers usedwas either less or about the sameamount that cage divers in the areaof Kogel Bay use to attract sharks.

Furthermore, the programme op-erated on the preceding Sunday andMonday. Any residual chum wouldhave dissipated within hours and,due to the wind direction, movedaway from Kogel Bay, according toa report by the City of Cape Town.

Meanwhile, Shark Spotters helda meeting in the Strand on Mondayto discuss stationing spotters at theCaves. The initiative was well sup-ported, and a request was made tohave spotters at the site all yearround. After a year, it was sugges-ted, it could be assessed whether itwould be necessary to keep the spot-ters at the site in winter.

The Shark Spotters are now im-plementing therequest. Itmaytakesometimeasweneed togetapprovaland funding, and we need to trainspotters, says Titley.

Local surfer Philip Nel shared hisviews about the incident the nextdayonhisblog. Its almost impossi-ble to objectify the cause of such anattack, he wrote. How can any ofus (including the shark scientists)claim to know enough to predictgreat white shark behaviour accu-rately? We surf this bay. We knowthe rules. We enter our other worldeach time we get knee-deep.

We all have numerous stories ofencountering these apex predatorswhile surfing here. Its a sad dayhere in the Boland. . . one of us diedyesterday. Sometimes they take us.

Rest in peace David. . . Well missyou truly, brother. . .

CUSTOMERS at McDonalds at SomersetMall were shocked when they found that atwo-year-old child had been left behind byher teachers last Thursday.

DistrictMail received a call just before14:00 on 19 April from a concerned readerabout this little girl, who had been forgot-ten after her teachers made a wrong stepin counting the children with them.

Figures releasedby thepolicesMissingPersons Bureau show that a child is repor-ted missing every six hours in South Af-rica. This adds up to a total of 1 460 chil-dren per year.

Protect your dogs!THERE has been a spate of dogsgoing missing in these areas, andwebelieve that someof themhavebeen stolen by the people who sellcompost in the area.

In other cases dogs were stolenand taken to informal settle-ments. There have been two casesalready where people have re-trievedtheirdogsfromNomzamo.

Dogs thatare indangerofbeingstolen are pit bulls, staffies, bullterriers, Rottweilers, Germanshepherds and huskies. Makesure your dogs are secured inyouryard.Thesepeople dont juststeal puppies, they steal maturedogs too, sopleasemakesureyourdog can preferably not be seenfrom walkways or roads.

    These people are unscrupu-

lous: they break into houses, cutholes in gates, yank the dogs oversix-metre walls, cut off bolts andlocks. Report youths peering overwalls and just strolling aroundaimlessly these guys might betargeting your place next! Reportall strange activity groups ofguys walking with two or moredogs (mainly pit bulls) at strangetimes of the day. If you see anyonetrying to sell a dog at any street, mall or corner, call the police andthe SPCA immediately.

It is a good idea to put thenumber of the officer who drivesthe police inspection vehicle onyour phone (get it from your po-lice station), and the office and af-ter hours numbers of the SPCA.

If you are sure your dog has

been stolen, report it to the police. The police have to open a properdocket and give you a casenumber. If theofficerondutydoesnot want to open a case, ask tospeak to the station commander.

NOT everyone has dogs that barkconstantly.

As a dog owner I know dogs bark, but have you ever asked yourselfwhy?

    1. People walking past your house.2. Neighbourhood cats deciding

its more comfortable sleeping infront of my gate and driving my dogsinsane (this is my main problem).

    3. Noise.Just simple reasons. Dogs commu-

nicate by barking. Its in their natureand we cannot take it away fromthem. Its like trying to tell a roosterto stop crowing! As a cat owner, tryto get your cat not to meow. . .How doyou expect a dog to understand?

Die redevir my knorrigheid is omdat daarn hand vol dowe, dom, honde-eie-naars is wat naby my woon.

Soasof mense in n ouetehuis nood-wendig n laer-klas mens is.

The fact is nobody can really say forsure why the attack took place and whatcaused it.

Research is being conducted continual-ly on these creatures to try and find outmore about them and what makes themtick, because there is still so much aboutthem that we do not know.

A meeting to establish a shark spottersprogramme on the Strand and Kogel BayBeaches was held earlier this week andthis will hopefully be implemented soon.

Until we know more about thesesharks, a shark spotting programme thatwill get people out of the water as soon asa shark is seen, is the only way to ensurethat there will be no more attacks.

RIP David LilienfeldTHE tragic loss of Camps Bay bodyboard-er, David Lilienfeld (20) to a Great WhiteShark at Kogel Bay on Thursday, 19 Aprilis hard for all to accept.

My deepest sympathies to the familyand friends of this well-loved, respectedand talented young bodyboarder.

So much has been said and writtenabout the incident that it is difficult to addanything else.

Scientists, so called shark experts,shark-cagedivingoperators, surfers, fish-ermen, divers and other ocean users allhave different theories as to why the at-tack took place.

Somepeople believe thatsharkcageop-erators and researchers are dumping toomuchchumintotheseaandthis isattract-ing more and more sharks to our coast-line.

Researchers who have been catchingthese Great Whites sharks and attachingradio transmitters to them to study theirbehaviour have been accused of trauma-tising the sharks and changing their be-haviour.

There is also anopinion that the sharksthat are attracted by the chum from re-searchers and cage diving operators arestarting to associate people with food.

Another theory is that therewasahugeschool of baitfish seen in and around theKogel Bay area throughout the weekwhich in turn attracted bigger fish, dol-phins, seals and sharks.

STEYNSRUST Road in Somer-set West has been under thewatchful eye of theCity ofCapeTowns Traffic Services since29 March.

Traffic Services stepped inafter Somerset West residentKaren Geldenhuys lodged acomplaint with DistictMailabout traffic density in theSteynsrust area and pointedout that motorists werentsticking to the 60km/h speedlimit in the residential area.

She says road use has in-creased markedly in recentyears with various new developmentsin the area, adding that cars and buses areusing Steynsrust and Abelia Roads as ashortcut toSomersetWest andStellenbosch.

Geldenhuys says she approached Bene-dicta van Minnen, councillor for ward 15,with these concerns in July last year. Sheasked that traffic regulation or speed calm-ing measures be taken.

Heavy traffic, she says, starts as early as04:00 daily. Many motorists disregard trafficrules, and accidents are frequent, with themost recent one involving a bus transport-ing school children.

Van Minnen confirms that developmenthas indeed contributed to an increase intraffic. She says funds will be allocated forspeed calming efforts in Steynsrust Road, but explains that, before any speed-calmingmeasures can be installed, the area needs to

be monitored by the City of Cape TownsTraffic Services.

Brett Herron, mayoral committee mem-ber for transport, roads and stormwater, says, Steynsrust Road is a district distribu-tor route in the metropolitan road network, and can be expected to carry substantiallyhigher traffic volumes than a lower-orderresidential road.

Physical traffic calming measures arenot appropriate to this type of road, and arenot supported by the Citys Traffic CalmingPolicy.

Herron has, however, agreed to have thearea monitored, and has initiated increasedvehicle checks.

Members of the public are encouraged tosubmit any requests, in writing, to their lo-cal traffic department.

    New cemetery forSomerset WestJAMEY THOMAS

A NEW cemetery is being planned for Vaalfontein tocater for future burials.

The Vaalfontein cemetery site neighbours a smallfarmgraveyardinOldStrandRoad, nearFirgrove.Thesite covers around 20 ha, enough space for 15 000graves. Councillor Tandeka Gqada, the City of CapeTowns mayoral committee member for communityservices, says cemeteries are filling up fast, so newones need to be developed.

Althoughsomeof thecemeteries thathavereachedfullcapacitycontinuetobeusedbyfamilieswhodecideon the option of second burials on top of the first, somecultures and religions prefer to bury in vacant graves, and we need to keep up with demand.

The Vaalfontein cemetery will be developed in threephases. The first will start next year, and the spacewill be available by 2014 if all the necessary processesgo as planned. Formal tenders will be advertised bythe City towards the end of 2012. It is estimated thatthe cemetery, including all phases and facilities, willcost between R8- and R10-million.

The new cemetery will provide a choice of two typesof private graves full monumental and berm graves. The berm-grave layout excludes pathways betweengraves, and memorials are limited to headstones; nomonuments will be allowed on the surface of the grave, which will be levelled and grassed to provide accessto visitors.

Bermgravescost 40%of thepriceof a fullmonumen-tal grave. Both berm and full monumental graves will

offer exclusive right of burial, and families will be giv-en the option to re-use a grave for a second burial.

Non-private or public graves the cheapest burialoption will also be available. Public graves grant thedeceaseds next of kin the right to mark the site forfive years, after which the City may allow a secondburial on top of the first burial, without disturbing thefirst in any way. A variety of choices for cremated re-mains will also be available.

During the last five years City Parks has extendedthe Khayelitsha, Grassy Park and Welmoed cemeter-ies, and developed new ones in Wallacedene and Delft.

THE section of the railway line near Somer-set Ridge in Somerset West continues to beused as a dumping ground.

Somerset Ridge resident Des McCay saysthat on numerous occasions he has seen va-grantsgoing throughhiswheeliebinsoncol-lection mornings, only to leave the rubbishlying around.

He also claims he and his wife are threat-ened when they ask the vagrants to stopscratching in their bins and to leave theirproperty.

One man even tried to pull a knife on mywife, but fortunately the police reacted swif-tly and escorted the vagrant away, saysMcCay.

Ward councillor Benedicta van Minnensays this is a very big problem in SomersetWest, and one often contributed to by resi-dentswhoput theirdustbinsout theeveningprior to collection day.

These bin-scratchers or the TrolleyBrigade as they are sometimes known areprobably one of the single biggest com-plaints that residents have in SomersetWest, she says.

As everyone has a right to move aroundthe streets as they please, Van Minnen ex-plains that it is very difficult to prevent thisunsightly problem. However, the issue canbe exacerbated by residents who give direc-tly to thehomeless insteadof supportingsus-tainable initiatives such as the local nightshelter.

Therefore, she says, she and fellow wardcouncillor Stuart Pringle will be fully sup-

porting the Give Responsibly Campaign andits emphasis on donations being made toshelters and relief organisations whose aimit is to help the homeless responsibly.

Despite the sterling work done by theneighbourhood watch and HelderbergCrime Watch to manage this problem on bindays, Van Minnen says that legally there isvery little law enforcers can do. She does, however, encourage residents to continue toreport these incidents.

    Thringer Bratwurst in SdafrikaINES GIESE

Ohne finanziellen Rckhalt fielder zweite Neustart deutlichschwerer.

Neben unserer Wurst bieten wireinen Cateringservice an.
