Welcome and Congratulations! This is a very exciting time in your life as you begin your new journey of learning. Every year students tell us that a key factor to their success is getting involved on campus and making a difference in their community. We expect you to take advantage of this week to learn as much as possible about your new environment.

Fall Welcome Week has been planned for you to learn about academic resources, to become familiar with the campus, and to learn about the Santa Cruz community. Use this guide to learn about the many workshops & events taking place on campus.

Notice that some events are MANDATORY. Your academic and social transition to UC Santa Cruz is extremely important to us. We consider you a partner in your academic and social success here at UCSC. Therefore we expect you to actively participate in the many programs and services this first week and well beyond. So, start now and begin making connections!

Tour the newly renovated McHenry Library. Attractions include the Global Village Café, the Information Commons, group study rooms, and more. Or get a tour of the Science & Engineering Library. You will learn about the library’s services and collections, such as borrowing course textbooks, online research databases, the Media Center and the video game room. Tours run approximately 30 minutes.

Drop-In Shot Clinic9/24 - 9/26 9 - 11 am & 2 - 4 pm Student Health Center Students may receive immunization shots for the following: Hepatitis B ($121 each-series of 3 required), meningitis ($146) , MMR ($87), tetanus/pertussis (Tdap) ($77), HPV (Gardasil) ($150 each-series of 3 required), and Varicella (Chicken Pox) ($128). All are 100% covered by the UC health insurance plan. Proof of Hepatitis B vaccination for students younger than 19 years of age on 9/22/12 is the only vaccination required for enrollment. All others are highly recommended by the CDC and the American College Health Association. To take full advantage of this clinic, please have immunization records with you.

The UCSC Campus is unique within the University of California in that over 400 acres of the campus have been set aside as a Natural Reserve. These lands are home to 1000’s of plants and animals including bobcat, deer, and the pacific giant salamander. This event will discuss the animals and plants found on the Campus Natural Reserve, highlight ways you can get involved in research and educational activities at our Natural Reserves and the Natural History Museum, learn about appropriate use of the reserve, and see some of the animals and plants that occur on campus. Expect to laugh and get a few tips to help you cope with becoming an official Banana Slug. You’ll also get to meet some of the college staff. Attendance is mandatory for all Cowell residents. All new Cowell students are welcome, even those who live off campus or elsewhere. Afterwards, enjoy cookies and beverages in the Cowell Courtyard.

Frosh Academic Orientation; MANDATORY for First Year Cowell Frosh Students 11:30 am - 12:30 pm Stevenson Events CenterAdvisers will cover general education and graduation requirements, academic progress standards, the UCSC grading system and discuss other academic-related questions. Bring this Welcome Week Schedule, your personal calendar, and a pen. NOTE: If you miss this required session you will need to attend the make-up college advising orientation: Wednesday, September 26, 1:30-3 pm. See page 24 for details.

Analytical Writing Placement Exam 1 - 3 pm Locations as follows:Students without an exam receipt or fee waiver: Media Theater (M110)Students who have requested DRC accommodations: Oakes 101/102/103All other Cowell students: Classroom Unit 2This make-up exam is available to incoming frosh who did not take the systemwide exam in May 2012. A passing score (8 or above out of a possible 12) on the AWPE may be used to satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR) and a score of 10 will satisfy the C1 requirement.
