Industry News Judge Rules for Plaintiffs in Maryland HBCU Equity Trial In an important decision for HBCUs, Judge Catherine C. Blake ruled this week that the state of Maryland perpetuates segregation in higher education by permitting better- funded traditionally white institutions to offer the same degree programs, discouraging enrollments at historically black colleges. In her decision, Judge Blake found that certain high-demand specialty programs duplicated by traditionally white schools — a form of “separate but equal” — encouraged segregation among campuses by drawing students from the state’s black schools, which historically have been underfunded. Judge Blake suggested several remedies to repair the situation: mediation, new niche areas for black schools and the possible transfer or merger of some programs, but has not, as yet, lev- ied any penalties or other sanctions. Judge Rules for Plaintiffs in Maryland HBCU Equity Trial

In an important decision for HBCUs, Judge Catherine C. Big Win for Gerald Ivey in Patent Case

Gerald Ivey, a partner in Finnegan Henderson’s DC office

scored a big win on behalf of his client, Moscow-based

software company ABBYY, in District Court this week.

California-based Nuance had accused Ivey’s client, AB-

BYY Software House, of infringing three of its patents and

mirroring its packaging. Both companies market software

that uses optical character recognition technology, or

OCR, to convert scanned images of text so they can be

searched and edited digitally. In the end, ABBYY pre-

Andrew Wallace Appointed to Board of State Bar of Texas

Andrew Wallace, partner in the Dallas office of Gordon &

Rees has been appointed to a three-year term on the

Board of Directors of the State Bar of Texas. Wallace’s

primary areas of practice are commercial and business

litigation, a significant portion of which focuses on mat-

ters related to real property and construction. He is also

the Dallas Office Chair of the firm's Diversity Committee.

U.S. Attorney Brown Says Shutdown Like “Kryptonite for Crime-Fighting”

Kenyen Brown, the first African-American to serve as a

United States Attorney in the history of the State of Ala-

bama, decried the effects the shutdown and earlier se-

quester cuts have had on his ability to prosecute crimes in

Natalie Lamela Appointed to Board of USNC for UN Women

Natalie Lamela, an associate with Concepción Martinez

& Bellido in Miami has been appointed to the Board of

Directors for the Miami Chapter of the U.S. National

Committee (USNC) for UN Women for a two-year term.

The US National Committee (USNC) for UN Women is

an independent non-profit, 501c3 organization that sup-

ports the mission of UN Women and social, political,

and economic equality for women and girls around the

world.
