Why is important to shift from diversity to inclusion?

The Gray and The Brown

• Each day the size of the US population increases by more than 8000 people, and nearly 90% of that growth is people of color

• People of color make up more than 2/5 of all children under 18

• People of color will be a majority of American children as early as 2023

• 4/5 of American seniors are white• Whites will still comprise about 2/3 of the senior

population by 2040

“The future of America is in this question: Will the Baby Boomers recognize they have a responsibility and a

personal stake in ensuring that this next generation of largely Latino and African-American kids are prepared to

succeed? This ethnic transformation could be the greatest asset this country will have, with a young multilingual, well-educated workforce. Or it could tear us apart and become a

major liability.”

-- Stephen Klineberg, Ph.D., Founding Director of Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University

The Cultural Generation Gap

Aging, wealthier white population increasingly resistant to taxes and public spending

vs.Younger, multiracial population that views public

education, health and social welfare programs as best ladder of opportunity

= POLITICAL GRIDLOCK

Battles in the Cultural Generation Gap Wars

• Arizona’s controversial S.B. 1070 immigration law

• Donald Trump’s presidential campaign• 60+ attempts by House Republicans to

repeal Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)• Beyonce’s 2016 Super Bowl performance• #OscarSoWhite and Margaret Cho’s

#WhitewashedOUT Twitter Chat • Define American, United We Dream and

the “Dreamers” Movement

How Does this Impact the Non-Profit and NGO Sector?

Page 8: Diversity Series: Dismantling Racism Within Nonprofit Organizations

Defining Your Culture of Service As older and younger voters clash over taxes, NGOs can expect to pick up the slack in providing what were once publicly-funded services to the community:• Which population(s) do you serve? • What programs will they want/need?• Who do you hire to execute?• Either way, you will have to develop cultural

competency across both generational cohorts to hire and retain employees who can serve the diverse needs of your constituents/members

“Millennials in the workforce…are generally more focused on being valued for the multiplicity of their

identities – their whole self – as opposed to just those conventional delineations to which they

belong.”

-- “What if the road to inclusion were really an intersection?”, Deloitte University Leadership Center for Inclusion ©2014

The Role of Leadership

According to psychologist and science journalist Daniel Coleman, to create a more inclusive work culture it is important for leaders to develop emotional intelligence (EQ): • Self awareness• Self regulation• Motivation• Empathy• Social skill

Self Awareness: Common Patterns of Well-intentioned White People

• Rushing to prove oneself• Assuming people of color have the same

experience you do• Acknowledging racism in other whites, not

oneself• Focusing on delivery• If “they” won’t teach me, I can’t know
