SERVICE OF WORDOPENING HYMN Every Morning Mercies New | CW 580

INVOCATIONP: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship

of the Holy Spirit be with you.C: And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINSP: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve

him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.PRAYER AND PRAISEP: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

P Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve. Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

The WordFIRST READING 1 Kings 19:3-8

3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep.

All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

7 The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

PSALM OF THE DAY PSALM 34

Page 7: Divine Service I - s3.amazonaws.com file · Web viewWe pray that you would open our hearts by your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of your Word we may repent of our sins,

Taste and see that the LORD is good;*blessed are they who take refuge in him.

The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous*and his ears are attentive to their cry.

The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him,*and he delivers them.

RefrainThe righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them;*

he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted*

and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The LORD redeems his servants;*

no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.Glory be to the Father and to the Son*

and to the Holy Spirit,as it was in the beginning,*

is now, and will be forever. Amen.Refrain

SECOND READING Hebrews 5:11-6:3

11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers,

Page | 7

Page 8: Divine Service I - s3.amazonaws.com file · Web viewWe pray that you would open our hearts by your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of your Word we may repent of our sins,

you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.

VERSE OF THE DAY P Alleluia. Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we

do not see. Alleluia. (Hebrews 11:1)

GOSPEL READING John 6:41-5141 At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, “I

am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
