A MESSAGE FROM THE SHOW CHAIRS – 2004

The 2004 Indiana Gourd Society Annual Show promises to incorporate many new ideas while continuing tried and true elements of past shows. We have added and deleted classes, techniques and terminology with the intention of producing a challenging and rewarding show. Please take time to read this book and bring it with you to the Show. It contains new classes, information and forms. We ask that you complete the appropriate forms, make copies of them and mail them to the designated address. The book copies will serve as your record(s) and you will have all necessary show information at your fingertips.

We would like to highlight two new classes in hopes that you will begin planning entries now.

Found on page 23, they are Classes 25 and 26 - the “garden trellis or arbor full size and functional” and a smaller “tabletop model garden trellis or arbor”. The idea behind these two classes is the reoccurring question asked by show attendees, “How do I make a trellis?” Since a picture is worth a thousand words, we anticipate this class will provide unique and creative answers to the question.

As you plan your trellis design, consider turning the allotted space into “outdoor” space, (similar

to the demonstration gardens at the flower and patio shows). You may add mulch and dirt around the base, gourd art for decoration and dried gourds. Simulated vines, grapevines and/or plastic vine may be used in these two classes, only. We want you to use your imagination.

Workshops promise to energize and excite. Many instructors will teach new designs. Workshop

information found in Section IV includes black and white project photos with descriptions and a presenter list. Also, you will be able to view these same photos, in color, posted on our web site: www.indianagourdsociety.org

In 2004, the entire show schedule will be displayed on the web site. Complete the forms by

typing your information; then, print them out and mail them to the designated address. We expect this new process will minimize errors and increase our efficiency.

Also, exhibit registration has changed. You determine the level at which you best fit in the

classes(es) you enter. For example: A ten-year old child may exhibit home grown dried gourds in a class with “adult” growers; or, an experienced painter may try wood burning and exhibit his wood burned entry in a class as a Beginner. Our goal is to provide everyone the opportunity to try new techniques and to make more classes available.

“Make It –Take It” classes offer mini-workshop versions of classes presented by well known instructors for just $10. Students will create, in less than an hour’s time, a gourd project to take home. This concept introduces new to experienced folks to crafting techniques they may not have had the time or opportunity to previously experience.

The 2004 Floral Design classes encourage participation. This year, Jim and Jane Story expect to

see these classes brimming with blossoms. Jim has offered to furnish anyone entering Class 35, with one of his black gourd containers. To request one, contact Jim (765) 7789-3653.

Volunteers are the life blood of the Indiana Gourd Society. In 2004 they will be in high demand.

As a volunteer, your Show experience promises to be fun, educational, and rewarding. Remember, volunteers will be provided with a free admission pass to the Show.

Sincerely, Nancy Norris, 2004 Show Chair Karen Niemeyer, 2004 Assistant Chair

KOKOMO HISTORY – POPULATION 46, 113, ELEVATION 806’ Kokomo experienced growth with the discovery of natural gas in 1886. Among those drawn to

the area’s natural resources was Elwood Haynes, a specialist in metallurgy and machinery who is said to have created America’s first automobile as well as stainless steel and several other alloys. Haynes opened Indiana’s first automobile plant in Kokomo in 1898. Kokomo industrialists were the first to produce the pneumatic rubber tire, the carburetor and a push-button car radio.
