Conference and DCON, I hope to put new knowledge to use in bringing the schools in our division closer together. One of the most important goals of my term is to increase communication, like I said in the Letter of Introduction. Not only will I focus on strengthening inactive clubs, I will make sure all the clubs in our division are communicating with each other. By working together, clubs can draw members from other clubs for help and can definitely increase any Key Clubber's enthusiasm to participate in Key Club. Throughout my term, I hope to increase this communication and strength the bonds that make the Key Club part of the Kiwanis Family. From this article, I hope you have gotten to know me a little better. Please let me know if you have any questions for me. DCON Recap

2 KEY CLUB Division 14 Newsletter

From April 16 - 18th, Key Clubbers and guests gathered from all over New Jersey to join together in celebration of the end of a great Service Year and the dawn of a new one. As buses started to arrive at the grand Valley Forge Convention Center in King of Prussia Pennsylvania, (Home of the East Coast's largest mall) the Board of Trustees prepared a Registration table and a Service Fair. Key Clubbers who arrived earlier enjoyed themselves at the Service Fair which catered to this year's theme of "Traveling the World of Service" by serving exotic snacks. In addition, arrivals could peruse tri-folds and meet representatives from a variety of charities, getting new ideas for their own clubs along the way.

At this year's DCON, we were fortunate enough to have Mr. Palazzolo, the Kiwanis International President, as our Keynote speaker during the Welcoming Session. He truly opened my eyes on the encompassing role of service in life. The elections process for the new District Board started as well with inter-divisional caucasus to get to know the candidates. Later that night, the semi-formal dance was a chance to meet new people and have fun with friends after a long Friday!

Saturday was jam-packed with activities. A variety of educational and motivational workshops lined before us in the morning including officer workshops, UNICEF, and fun workshops such as "Belly Dancing" that helped me meet people.

Although others left for the giant mall, I went to the Talent Show for a majority of my Saturday. Not only did

I enjoy seeing the diverse range of talents from Key Clubbers, I also began to realize the underlying theme that tied them together and to Key Club: passion.

One of the more important aspects of Saturday evening was the presentation of awards. One after one, high-achieving clubs and members were distinguished by the Kiwanis and the New Jersey District Executive Board. Lastly, Saturday afternoon finalized our decisions for District office as candidates made their speeches and paraded through the auditorium. Another dance, this time a formal one, followed this presentation and, again, was SO MUCH FUN! Bright and early on Sunday morning Key Clubbers got up for the CSH Walk in a parking lot in the Convention Center. Despite the cold, we raised over $2000 for the Children's Specialized Hospital, last year and this year's District service Project! At the Farewell Session, elections results from the night before were announced and the new officers inducted into office along with the new Board of Trustees. However, with induction of the new comes with the retirement of the old Board. Individually, Mr. Barrie Werfel, our District Administrator, congratulated every Board Member on a great year. And, finally, the 64th Annual NJ District Convention concluded. I, for one, was very sad that it had ended so soon. So for those hoping to join us next year: remember to enjoy the experiences along the way!

Hello fellow Key Clubbers! My name is Bhavna Patny, and I am the Millburn High School Key Club’s president for the 2010-2011 Service Year. Last year was a great success as we accomplished many of our goals, including an exciting talent show for UNICEF and a fundraiser for Haiti that collected over $15,000!

Currently, the Millburn High School Key Club is working towards helping the Valerie Fund. This organization helps children battling with cancer. The events we have held to raise money for the Valerie Fund include a car wash, restaurant nights, and money collection. The closer we get to our goal of $2,000, the more successful we get as a club. Helping these children get through the pain and suffering that goes along with having cancer is what defines our Key Club. This is our way of caring for the community, which is, as state in the Key Club Motto, our way of life. Along with helping the Valerie Fund, I hope to make this service year even better and more exciting. My goals for this year include better communication between the officers, committee heads, and general members, more

communication with our Kiwanis advisors, and more events throughout the year. I hope to make this club a fun and exciting club for each and every member. The start of a new service year is the best time to start an even better Key Club, which will carry on the same motto that it has been carrying on for years: “Caring – Our Way of Life”. Creating a website is no easy task. Here are some simple steps to creating a user friendly website in a short time.

First off, if you do not know how to code, don’t! Don’t waste time trying to code and referring back and forth when you have many simpler options. Sites like webs and moonfruit.com are great website builders that you can use to create an amazing website without the hassle of codes. All you have to do is go to one of these sites and sign up! In addition, creating an email for just for maintaining your website will keep you organized. Site builders notify you any activity on your site such as forum updates and dormancy warnings.

Secondly, chose a domain name. The domain name should be simple and easy for people to remember. (i.e. millburnkeyclub.webs.com).

Third, try to build tabbed pages and content. All reputable website builders give you the ability to create a tab. However, you should name it and only add content that specifically fits that title, that way your website is easy to navigate. Also, it allows more room for blank spots on your pages so your visitors feel comfortable and not cluttered.

Also, unless you can claim the domain and create ads, you should post links to heavily traveled websites (i.e. njkeyclub.org / keyclub.org). Popular websites are quite high up on many search engines’ result list. Thus if you link to such websites and they link you as well, your rank on search results will be dramatically heightened.

Next, focus on the design. When designing a website, you have to make sure it reflects the message you want to convey. Especially for a group like Key Club, your message is happy and inviting. Therefore, try to use softer versions of neon colors, pastels, and of course white. Also, be sure to include your school’s colors and lots of pictures and logos when designing!

Last, you are going to need to get your website out there, it’s no use in keeping a fabulous website with no viewers/members! Most website builders come with their own built in “invite system” copy and paste all of the contacts from your clubs roster (an easy way to do this if they’re all in a preexisting email address, click select all, then email all, then all you have to is copy and paste all of the emails (as long as they are ONLY the emails – no names, no <brackets>) into the “invite contacts” box, put a cute little message and there you go! If there are brackets and/or names, simply send out an email telling everyone to join.

After that you’re on your own to run things however you like! I’ve shared all my secrets about efficient web mastering so get out there and make a website! Websites are a great way to keep members informed and tell your Key Club’s story.

Have fun & good luck,

Brittany Coughlin, Millburn Key Club Webmaster.

That’s right, Division 14, the summer is right around the corner! And with the summer comes Key Club’s annual International Convention, this time in the historic Memphis, Tennessee! This year, the Key Club International has put together an amazing Convention, and the District is planning yet another tour to go along with it! The New Jersey District will travel to Memphis by bus, leaving New Jersey on the morning of July 4th, and returning on the evening of July 12th. On the road to

ICON, we will stop at many points of interest, including Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio, Graceland, and the Civil Rights Museum. At ICON, the festivities will begin with a private concert by Ohio pop-rock superstars Relient K, and shall continue with appearances by such celebrities as Clay Aiken and Josh Hutcherson, various workshops, caucuses and elections, and dances! It will truly be a week to remember. Anyone interested in attending, please contact your

LTG ASAP for more information (including a primer and registration form), as the first payment is due by May 15th. If money is an issue, feel free to ask your Kiwanis Club to help you out with the costs. They would be glad to help!
