DIVISION NEWS NOTES
~ from Lynda Lowery, Division President
2012 is off to an outstanding start in Alabama Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy. Traditional Winter
Board meeting has been reinstated and UDC members from throughout Alabama gathered at the Marriott in Prattville
on Saturday, January 21, for Winter Board 2012. As reported in the February Message, attendance was excellent
including 13 of 13 Division Officers present, 8 of 9 District Directors, 33 of 42 Division Committee Chairs, 3 Ex-Division
Presidents, 4 Honorary Life Presidents, and 44 of 57 Alabama UDC Chapters represented. The Division Executive
Committee met on Friday afternoon, January 20, in Prattville.
At Winter Board, all Division officers conducted workshops filled with useful information – most especially for District
Directors and Chapter officers who are charged with the responsibility of leadership. Members picked up Chapter
Presidents packets as well as pre-paid 2011 Division Yearbooks. They also purchased the new book, Confederate
Ancestors of the Alabama Division United Daughters of the Confederacy, compiled by Glendora James during months of
dedicated hard work. Attendees also purchased the “Confederate Alabama 150th Remembrance” DVD compiled by D.A.
Bass-Frazier. When members such as Glendora and D.A. devote their own personal time, not as a requirement of an
office or a chairmanship, to produce these wonderful items for our Division, we all owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
Division Flag Chairman Brenda Dumas, not one to rest on the success of the $17,888.00 donation from ALAUDC to the
ADAH for conservation of the 30th Alabama Infantry Flag, is now busy raising funds for the 20th Alabama Infantry Flag.
The current estimate for the 20th Flag is $15,415.00 and progress is being made with fundraising.
February 10 was the deadline for Chapters to submit annual per capita reports and Chapter Treasurer reports to
Division Treasurer Carolyn Parrish. All Chapter Treasurers have been encouraged to work to retain members. Also, All
Chapter Registrars are strongly encouraged to work to gain new members; the President General has asked each
Division to set a goal of 150 new members during 2011-2012.
District meetings are now in progress and continue to be a vital part of Division UDC in most geographical areas of
this Division. District meetings in February include: General Henry D. Clayton, Jefferson Guards, and Bankhead. District
meetings in March include: Mobile Bay, General John H. Forney, Letitia Ross/ Jefferson Davis, Joe Wheeler and Nathan
Bedford Forrest.
In April, the CofC Confederate Memorial Service will be held at Confederate Memorial Park at Mountain Creek on
Saturday, April 21. The UDC Confederate Memorial Day celebration will be observed at the Confederate Monument in
Montgomery on Monday, April 23.
Division Convention dates are probably already noted on calendars of all ALAUDC members: September 13-16, 2012
at the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Marriott Hotel in Mobile.

Thank You to Alabama Division Registrar Glendora James for producing this roster of Confederate ancestors. Glendora
spent many months working to complete this valuable and much needed book. The book, “Confederate Ancestors of
the Alabama Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy,” is available for purchase.
As you know, the Alabama Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy, is currently raising funds to conserve the 20th
Alabama Infantry Flag. We need your help in reaching our goal. The past is in the hands of the future, your future. It is
our goal that during the Historical Evening events that we shall be able to present a check for the total amount to fund
the conservation of the 20th Alabama Infantry Flag. Will you help us make this possible?
The committee has a special ‘NEW’ category in raising funds for the 20th AL Infantry Flag. It is called the “Twenty for the
Twentieth AL Infantry Flag.” There will be a giant banner “ROLL CALL” listing of each member who contributes at least
$20 to the fund. This large roster will be on display at the Division Convention in September!
Remember the men who wore the gray. Honor them by keeping alive the memory of the men. May they never be
forgotten and may we forever pay tribute. Please care enough to help us save the 20th Alabama Infantry Flag!

A collection of socks and Tee Shirts were donated by Mobile Bay Chapters at their Alabama Day Celebration held
December 14 at Steelwood Country Club, Loxley, Alabama. The donated items were delivered to William F. Green
Veterans Facility at Bay Minette. The United Daughters of Confederacy is just one of the constant contributors to the
facility helping meet the needs of the veterans housed there. In addition to a well-planned and executed meeting in the
picturesque Club House, the 31 people enjoyed a delightful meal.

UDC Hosts DeKalb County Historian The UDC DeKalb County Chapter #1456 met on November 19, 2011 in Fort Payne, AL. The Chapter program,
“History of DeKalb County,” was provided by Mr. Doug Brandon, DeKalb County Historian. Doug provided the
Chapter members with a wealth of information beginning with the county history expanding from the early
1800’s to the mid 1900’s. Some of the highlights of the talk consisted of the following, we learned that DeKalb
County, Alabama, was established January 9, 1836 from land that was ceded to the federal government by the
Cherokee Nation and was named for Baron Johann Sebastian DeKalb, an American Revolutionary War hero.
Removal of the Indians opened up new land for settlement in DeKalb County. The census of 1840 indicated
that the population of DeKalb County was 5,929. Most of the settlers chose to settle on land in the valleys
because more valley land had been cleared, communication was easier and soil appeared to be more suitable
for farming. However, a few adventurous pioneers settled on Lookout and Sand Mountains. By 1860 families
were scattered over both Lookout and Sand Mountains. Young men and older men of DeKalb County served
in various Confederate units. Several towns in DeKalb County were named as the county seat over the years.
Fort Payne was designated as the county seat on May 5, 1878 and is the current seat. By 1885 coal and iron
ore was discovered and by 1888 the Fort Payne Coal and Iron Company was organized and the growth (Boom)
began. At the conclusion of the talk, Doug presented the Chapter with copies of these books: “A History of
Company E 12th Alabama Infantry,” “Confederate Burials in DeKalb County, Alabama” and “Confederate
Pensioners and Widows Who Drew a Pension in DeKalb County, Alabama 1885-1952.”

Gen. Edmond Winchester Rucker Member Attend UDC General Convention
Laura Womack-Rowell and Donna Clark, members of the Gen. Edmond Winchester Rucker Chapter 2534
attended the UDC General Convention in Fort Worth, Texas. As the Alabama Division President, Dr. Lynda Lowery,
processed in, they were among the other Alabama delegates who waved small Alabama flags and sang the state song,
Alabama.
At the Magazine Luncheon, the two Rucker Chapter members met Carolyn Rihn, a UDC member from Texas and
wife of Donald Rihn, a descendant of General Edmond Rucker’s sister, Sarah. Mr. Rihn had a family photo of General
Rucker and had a copy made for the UDC Chapter bearing his ancestor’s name. Mrs. Rihn presented the photo along
with a compilation of the Rucker family genealogy to Mrs. Womack-Rowell and Mrs. Clark.
As awards were presented, the Rucker Chapter was honored to receive two awards. They were presented with
a certificate and a $25.00 check for the sale of ancestor bars. The second award was First Place in the Scrapbook
judging. Chapter members were excited to receive this very prestigious award after winning the Division level judging.
The book was compiled by Chapter Historian, Marie Koach who followed all the specific rules as she carefully compiled
pictures and news articles and decorated more than 300 pages.
The chapter members were also pleased to learn that their chapter pin was approved by General to be worn on
the UDC ribbon. Designed by member Donna Clark, the oval pin features one side of the flag for Rucker’s Brigade in the
center. This side indicates that Rucker’s Brigade was a part of Forrest’s Cavalry. The actual flag is two-sided and on the
opposite side is the Latin phrase “Fortuna Favet Fortibus” which means “Fortune is favorable to the brave.” This phrase
has also been included in the pin design beneath the flag.
