Division Head’s Report

This Annual Report follows my first full calendar year at UCL. The intent of this report is to briefly outline

divisional activity in 2016.

In late 2015, the Institute of Neurology Division of Neurosurgery commissioned an external review of the

division in order to provide guidance for the future development of academic neurosurgery at the Institute

of Neurology. The review was chaired by John Pickard, Professor (Emeritus), University of Cambridge, and

included Professors Mike Tymianski (University of Toronto) and Tom Jessell (Columbia University). Over

the course of two days, the committee interviewed a number of people. Their extensive final report was

received in April 2016, and the Division has been working towards implementing their recommendations.

In addition to academic productivity, which is the focus of this report, I have included some measures of

neurosurgical clinical activity in the Victor Horsley Department of Neurosurgery at Queen Square, as our

patients form the foundation of academic progress. I note that UCL and NHS neurosurgeons function as a

group, with the common goal of improving the lives of people – today and tomorrow – who suffer from

diseases of and injuries to their nervous systems. This relationship is also reflected in the academic activity

reported in these pages, which includes that of UCL neurosurgeons as well as that of NHS neurosurgeons,

many of whom hold honorary UCL appointments.

In June 2016, the Division held an “Open for Research” day. About 100 people from across UCL attended to

learn about treatments of patients in each of the neurosurgical subspecialty areas, with a key goal being to

enhance research collaborations across the campus. The feedback was excellent, and new relationships

were formed that I am confident will lead to new translational research projects.

In November 2016, the Institute of Neurology held a symposium to mark the 100th centenary of the death

of Sir Victor Horsley. The Division was honoured to host Dr Zelma Kiss from the University of Calgary,

whose thoughtful and well-received 2016 Sir Victor Horsley Lecture was entitled “History of stereotactic

and functional neurosurgery: A marriage of science and surgery.”

I look forward to further growth in the Division’s academic productivity in the coming years as we welcome

a new era of academic neurosurgery at Queen Square.

Clinical Activity

At Queen Square, we provide clinical neurosurgical service for most subspecialty areas of neurosurgery,

with the exceptions of trauma and paediatrics. Despite the lack of these cases, which normally comprise a

large proportion of neurosurgical activity, we had the second highest number of neurosurgical admissions

in the country, with close to 4,000 admissions per year.

NUMBER OF ADMISSIONS (APRIL 2013-2016)

Included below are some examples of super-specialty clinical care.

Queen Square is a national referral centre for adult complex hydrocephalus. Our hydrocephalus team has

placed more shunts than any other centre in the country – about 120 per year.

Queen Square is also the leading centre for deep brain stimulation. The graph below shows the number of

new DBS insertions / implants per site from April 2013 through 2016. The number of DBS cases has been

increasing annually, with 80 new patients receiving treatment in the one year from April 2015-2016.
