iPods are Not Required

People used to think you needed an iPod to listen to podcasts. Before smartphones, you needed an MP3 player or… You could burn a podcast to a CD and play it on the CD or DVD player in your living room or your car. It’s audio content/entertainment when and where you want it.

RSS 2.0 Makes Podcasting Work

“Really Simple Syndication”

RSS 2.0 added the link to audio or video media

“Subscribing” is usually FREE

One of the most important pieces of Web 2.0 technology involves the syndication of website content. Specifically, RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a standardized protocol which makes a portion of a web site (web feed) available to individual subscribers[1]. Earlier versions of RSS contributed to the rise of blogs. RSS 2.0 introduced the concept of an “enclosure,” a link to another file – an mp3 audio file in the case of podcasts. Web feeds allow users to capture each new episode on the site using an “aggregator” or “podcatcher.”

RSS 1.0 led to rise of BLOGS, i.e., “web logs” RSS 2.0 allows an “enclosure”, a link to another file, e.g., and mp3 audio file RSS (Really Simple Syndication) 2.0 is a Web 2.0 technology that allows website syndication Allows portion of website, called a “web feed”, to be available to individual subscribers “Subscribing” doesn’t imply cost; most are free

[1] Here, subscribing refers to the technology of obtaining the content, not the cost. Most podcasts today are free and don’t require a payment to subscribe.

Podcasting – Everyone is doing it

Bloggers Amateurs Broadcasters

Radio shows NPR “In the Media”

YOU!

Tech savvy amateurs, including many bloggers, were the first to podcast. Education institutions of all sorts are beginning to make course content available as podcasts. Professional broadcasters and syndicated radio shows are now making their content available as podcasts. NPR’s “In the Media” was one of the first to appear. Apple was late to the game but gave podcasting a big boost about a year ago when they began to add podcasts to their iTunes music store directory. Now a search on iTunes lists almost 5,000 educational podcasts. Experienced bloggers Tech savvy amateurs Professional broadcasters Syndicated radio shows NPR “In the Media” “This Week in Tech” (Leo Laporte) Education institutions

Required Hardware

• PC or Mac • Microphone • Server for MP3 files • Server for Show Notes

For podcast producers, podcast technology uses existing Internet standards, and freely available audio recording software and hardware. Anyone with an Internet connection and a well equipped laptop can push their program out to the web. A lot of podcasters use a talk radio style. Some music is being included in the Podcasts, but songs better be “podsafe”, i.e., not restricted by the copyright holder. There are now several music services online that specialize in promoting podsafe music (http://music.podshow.com/ and http://www.magnatune.com/).

Really Simple Syndication respectively)[2] is a type of web feed[3] which allows users and applications to access updates to online content in a standardized, computer-readable format. These feeds can, for example, allow a user to keep track of many different websites in a single news aggregator. The news aggregator will automatically check the RSS feed for new content, allowing the content to be automatically passed from website to website or from website to user. This passing of content is called web syndication. Websites usually use RSS feeds to publish frequently updated information, such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, video. RSS is also used to distribute podcasts.

Let’s look at 3 scenarios that show how podcasting can benefit education and clinical care.

Podcasting Scenario : Student

Jane had to leave her pharmacology class early to attend to some urgent personal business, but she knew he could catch her professor’s podcast the next morning. That night, she “docked” her iPod so it could charge its batteries and, while she slept, his iTunes “podcatcher” downloaded the previous day’s lectures and several other podcasts of interest (a sports talk show and a pop music podcast). In the morning, she grabbed her iPod and listened to the lecture she missed while riding the bus to school. Hearing the banter and questions from students and his professor’s animated answers, she arrived at school feeling she hadn’t missed much and was well prepared for the next lecture.

Jefferson is using Apreso Classroom to capture lecture audio, computer displays and even video and automatically link the podcast content to the course site in our Blackboard course management system (http://pulse.jefferson.edu).

Several Universities including Duke, Stanford, UC Berkeley and the University of Michigan are using iTunes U, a free service from Apple to distribute course podcasts to their students and a subset of free podcasts to the public.

Podcasting – Lecture Capture

• Manual production by lecturer using, e.g., using Blogger and Feedburner.

• Capture Lecture Audio, Video, PowerPoint –Echo360 (www.echo360.com) –Mediasite (www.sonicfoundry.com/mediasite) –Panopto (www.panopto.com) –Tegrity Campus (www.tegrity.com) –Podcast LX (www.learningobjects.com)

In addition to capturing lecture audio, there are several 3rd party add-ons to Blackboard that can capture video and the computer screen (PowerPoints) of the teacher.

Podcasting Scenario : Clinician

Dr. Smith, a primary care physician, catches up with his continuing medical education (CME) while riding the R5 train in from the suburbs. He has a 15 minute walk to the station and has been using his smart phone lately instead of lugging around his heavy laptop computer. His smart phone has mp3 player software and can easily store 10 hours of audio programs. While recharging his phone last night, it automatically downloaded several CME programs from his med school’s alumni site. This morning he decided to review some of the latest thinking on neurological disorders and appreciated that his smart phone was able to display the PowerPoint diagrams that accompanied the audio lecture.

Podcasting seems to be a natural for continuing education. Numerous CE sites are becoming available for the mobile practitioner (http://www.cmepodcasting.com/, http://nursingspectrum.netstation.us/, http://www.med.nyu.edu/podcasting/).

Page 62: DIY Podcasting: Benefits for Teaching & Learning€¦ · DIY Podcasting: Benefits for Teaching & Learning!5 USciences at a Glance • A private, coed university founded in 1821 as

Podcasting Scenario: Patient

George, a 55 year old, mildly obese man, was waiting in his surgeon’s office for his last consult with him before he undergoes her first angioplasty procedure. The receptionist gave his daughter an iPod Touch. She learned what to expect before, during and after the procedure for her father. Some of the questions she had jotted down to ask her surgeon were easily answered upon reviewing the video presentation. After a brief consult with her surgeon to help clarify her remaining questions, she was allowed to take home the iPod to learn more about her risk factors and strategies for reducing them.

One of the first web sites to provide extensive audio and video podcasts for patients is the Cardiovascular Multimedia Information Network of the Arizona Hearth Institute (http://cvmd.org/). Its creator, cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Grayson Wheatley[1] (Jefferson Medical College, Class of 1994), has gained a lot of publicity as the first physician to replace magazines in his waiting room with video iPods. Podcasting is Growing

Ubiquitous “WiFi” (wireless) networks and smart phones have accelerated the adoption

of podcasting via streaming.

The above scenarios are happening today and will increase quickly as students who are already familiar with the technology become tomorrow’s healthcare providers and patients. Podcasting opens up new educational possibilities in a way that is easy to master, both for the listener and author/producer. The New Oxford American Dictionary selected "podcast" as the Word of the Year for 2005. The public is rapidly abandoning CD players for iPods and purchasing autos with built-in jacks for them. Ubiquitous cell phone and “WiFi” (wireless) networks will also help to accelerate adoption of podcasting when content can flow directly to our players.
