INSTRUCTIONS

Step 4 Stitch row 1 to row 2, continue stitching all rows together. Press seams. TIP: Pin rows together at each seam then sew together, make sure the seams on each row are matching perfectly. When pinning run the pin across your sewing line, down the existing seam.

Step 5 Take one of the border strips and 2 corner squares. Stitch a corner square on each end of the border strip panel. Do the same with a second border strip and corner squares. Press.

Step 6 Stitch the remaining 2 border strips on the right and left sides of your completed coloured squares. Press. Stitch the border strips with the corners to the top and bottom of the coloured squares panel. Press seams.

Step 7 Numbering the Squares (Satin Foot F) If your machine has a font with numbers, stitch the numbers on the coloured squares using tearaway under the fabric, start at Row 1 on the left, number across to the end of the row, then start numbering Row 2 from right to left, continue until you reach 100. Remove excess tear-away.

If your machine does not have a font, then write the numbers using a permanent fabric marking pen.

Step 8 Creating snakes (Satin Foot F)

On the felt you should have marked out your snakes.

Select decorative stitches, test sew first.

Use any decorative stitch which looks good.

We used a variegated thread.

When happy with stitch, sew down your snake, starting at the base of the head.

Stitch width 3.5mm at the start, as you stitch down the body increase to maximum width within 2cm of stitching. Sew down the body, as you near the tail decrease the width while stitching, finishing the tail at stitch width 2mm.

Cut them out.

Step 9 Take your squared panel and lay it on the batting. If you wish to use Quilt Basting Spray to hold the panel to the batting, follow the instructions on the tin to correctly use the Quilt Basting Spray.

Not using quilt basting spray, then attach the batting and squared panel using the quilting safety pins.

Step 10 Attaching the snakes (Satin Foot F) Pin a snake into position making sure the head is at the top. Using a zigzag stitch (width 2.0 length 1.5) stitch down each side of the snake, do not stitch down the head. Stitch eyes on each side of the head, using a decorative satin stitch (width 3.0, length 0.3) Continue stitching on all 9 snakes.

Step 11 Ladders (Even Feed Foot with Guide or Dual AcuFeed foot with guide)

Select zig zag stitch. Set width 3.5 length 0.30 Set quilt guide at 20mm from centre needle position. We used brown embroidery thread. Select positions for your ladders. Use tearaway under batting then stitch down one side. Use a pin to mark start and finish point for second leg—see below image. With the quilt guide positioned on the sewn leg, stitch the second leg. Sewing the ladder rungs, position the quilt guide at the top of the ladder and stitch across. Second rung place quilt guide on the first rung and stitch across. Continue until ladder is complete. Continue stitching ladders. We made 9.

Step 12 Remove any quilting safety pins and Press. Use rotary cutter to trim away access batting. Trim back to the edge of top panel. Measure top panel width and length in inches. Add 3 inches to both measurements - width and length Using these measurements cut your backing fabric.

Step 13 Place the top panel on top of the backing fabric, right sides facing out, top and bottom. You should have 1½” of access backing fabric on all sides. This will be used as the binding. Using the quilting safety pins, pin all layers together.

Step 14 Quilting Border (Even Feed Foot with Guide or Dual AcuFeed foot with guide)

Using the same foot and quilt guide, sew 3 stitches one inch apart along each of the 4 yellow check borders. We used a serpentine stitch.

Step 15 Self-binding Remove any quilting safety pins. You now require the Quilting Clips or Quilting pins. Fold the backing fabric to the edge of the top panel then fold over onto the top panel to form the binding. Do this on all sides, then mitre corners.

Below instructions show how to create mitred corners. (Pictures are not this project)

STEP 16 (Even Feed Foot with Guide or Dual AcuFeed foot with guide) Select straight stitch, length 3. stitch down binding.
