7) FEMALE INFANTICIDE & PC PNDT, ACT AWARENESS PROGRAM
Public Meetings and conferences were conducted with supports of
local volunteers, local social activists, local medical experts, etc.
besides local villagers & organizations members. Participants
agreed to activate against female infanticide and better awareness
for PCPNDT Act in their respective locality.
In this case, our operational areas were physically surveyed also and
ultra sound physicians were also consulted for female infanticide
elimination in rural and sub-urban areas for which they also agreed
and they determined not to make information of sex of any child
under pregnancy.
Female infanticide has been a social evil since centuries in India
which makes it possible for abortion of female fetus, if it is treated
unwanted. The most commonly used SEX DETERMINATION TEST is
AMNIOCENTESIS. Even though primarily discovered for fetus
malformation detections it has been being used to determine fetus
sex. Since 1978, this test is being utilized for sex determination test
or sex pre-selection test in our country; and it has become over
popular, leading to mushrooming of private clinics performing this
test, all over the country. The seriousness and social implications of
this test was realized in 1986.
Declining sex-ratio is alarming social signal. Natural order implies
that no of females born should slightly exceed that of males born.
Female infanticide whether by underfeeding, suffocating or
poisoning contributes to a skewed sex-ratio, which is further
worsened by Sex Determination Test. Couples normally hesitate to
carry out born infanticide and they find it easier to opt for medical
termination of pregnancy-which is allowed legally under certain
situations.
Socio-cultural attitudes glorify sons and treat female birth as a
calamity and suffering which lead to fetus sex deduction by
sophisticated modern medical technology so that female embryos
can be made aborted. Even in economically conscious states like
- 11 -
Jharkhand, the sex-ratio has highly declined, from 865 as per 1991-
cesus, it has fallen below 850 in 2001 census in Jharkhand.
Under female infanticide and PCPNDT Act Awareness Program, our
organization has organized and conducted awareness and advocacy
