Holiday Plant GuideBy Rhonda Marvin, President
Cambridge Board of REALTORS

Rhonda Marvin
Sincerely,Rhonda Marvin
Poinsettias are one of the most popular and prominent, holiday plants.
Whether you’re giving them as gifts or scattering them through your home throughout the season, holiday plants are a festive, colorful addition to any room. But don’t be fooled by their name: Christmas plants flourish until spring if they’re properly cared for.
Still not sure which one to get or give? These six varieties might be a good place to start.
Poinsettias: Surrounded by red, white or pink leaves, poinsettias (they’re actually the yellow center of the leafy part) are one of the staples of holiday flowers. To ensure this perennial lasts beyond the holidays, be sure that the plant you buy has either flowers just beginning to open or green buds that are tightly closed. Place the plant in bright - not direct - sunlight and make sure it has a moderate amount of moisture and fertilize the plant after the holidays.
Winter Hollies: Hollies have been used for holiday decorations for thousands of years. They prefer neutral to slightly acid, well-drained soils and most prefer full sun but tolerate partial shade. The male and female flowers are born on separate plants, and only females produce the colorful berries. There are thousands of hollies available - each one offering a unique combination of adaptation, size, leaf color or berry habit.
Amaryllis: Amaryllis bulbs blossom into strikingly colored blooms (ranging in color from crimson to white) on two-foot-high stems. Each plant produces a cluster of two to four blooms, with some blossoms reaching up to 8 inches in diameter at their peak. For holiday blooms, buy bulbs that are about to bud or beginning to flower. The plants fare best in cool locations and sunny windows.
Christmas cactus: These plants generally bloom from November until March, depending on the species. After watering and feeding the cactus normally, place it in a dark spare room or cover it at night. The darkness will stimulate blossom formation in late autumn. A dark garbage bag makes a nice cacti cover, until it’s time to bring them out into direct light in late fall.
Kalanchoe: Just like the Christmas cactus, the Kalanchoe is a succulent that produces clusters of petite buds in the autumn ranging in color from red to orange to purple to white. Easily grown in sun or shade, they prefer bright direct light and some heat.
Paperwhite: These narcissus are easy bulbs to force for the holidays. Paperwhite narcissus are beautiful, white delicate flowers that can be grown in just about anything, whether it’s plain water, gravel, potting soil or sand. The plants need plenty of moisture and light, as well as pleasant temperatures of 65 degrees. With too little light and too much warmth, you’ll find yourself tending to a tall, spindly paperwhite. If the plants become spindly and lean to the light, tie them to a stake with some raffia or twine.
Tie a ribbon around that clay pot, and give your favorite green thumb one of these five festive gifts. They’re perfect buys that with the right amount of care will be around for years to come.
If you’re in the market for a new home or thinking about selling your current home, contact a REALTOR. Their value and expertise will ensure a professional home buying/selling experience.

Perhaps no holiday tradition is more visible than decorative lights. Whether on the house or on the tree in the front picture window, holiday lights help create a festive mood for all. While aesthetically appealing, holiday lighting displays can also be quite dangerous. Older lights or poorly planned lighting projects can quickly turn tragic. However, this much beloved holiday tradition does not have to cease and desist. Instead, some simple safety precautions are all it takes to ensure this year's lighting display is both stunning and safe.- Make sure exterior lights are designed for outdoor use. Not all lights can handle the elements, so those old Christmas tree lights might not be able to enjoy a second life as part of a home's exterior lighting decor.- Plug lights directly into the electrical sockets rather than relying heavily on extension cords. Employ surge protector strips if there are not enough outlets available. Before plugging anything in, consult the fuse box to determine how much each circuit can safely handle.- Don't use damaged lighting sets, including those with frayed strings, unstable connections, exposed wires, or broken or cracked sockets.- Make sure all external lights are securely attached. Wind can do significant damage to bulbs, which can lead to additional safety risks. As a precaution, attach all lights firmly to walls or anything else that will not blow away when a stiff wind arrives.- Inside the home, be extra careful when using an artificial Christmas tree. Electric lights should never be used on a metallic tree.- Routinely check all cords' temperatures. If a cord feels too hot, unplug it and find a replacement.- Don't leave the lights on when no adults are home. If the home is empty or if just kids are home, make sure the lights are off. Avoid using timers that automatically turn the lights on, as it's possible they will turn on when no one is home. Unplug all cords when going away for the holidays just to be safe.- Make sure all cords are visible. Don't bury cords underneath rugs or floor mats to avoid personal injuries.- Hanging lights shouldn't be a solo project. Whether hanging lights inside or outside, never do so alone. A stiff wind might come along and blow the ladder away or an unstable ladder might lead to a fall. Accidents happen when hanging lights indoors as well, so make sure to have an adult partner on hand to avoid injury.- Make sure kids cannot reach lighting displays. Kids often adore holiday lighting displays and their natural curiosity is to reach for lights. Avoid potential accidents by keeping lights well beyond the reach of children.
SAFETY FIRST WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS
Holiday lighting displays are a beloved tradition but one homeowners must carefully consider and layout to avoid accidents.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a parent who isn’t looking for more storage space for children’s toys. As the latest toys and accessories hit store shelves, kids covet these items and want to make them their own. This can lead to overcrowding in children’s rooms and family areas.
A solution to the toys children are bound to collect is an attractive and functional storage area. A toy chest can offer just what the average homeowner is looking for. Plus, building a toy chest can be a project that the avid do-it-yourselfer can tackle, perhaps with children serving as pint-sized helpers.
Toy chests can be made in a variety of sizes depending on the available space. All that’s needed are a few supplies:
If you don’t have a saw handy, many times home improvement stores can cut wood to specific measurements.
Figure out the dimensions to the toy chest. Mark out the sides, bottom, front and lid of the toy chest and cut to size.
It may be safer to have two small lids that close toward the center of the chest instead of one larger lid that can slam down on children’s fingers unless safety hinges are used. As an added safety precaution, be sure the front face of the toy chest is sized smaller than the other panels so that the lid does not meet the panel. This allows room for small fingers, and ensures that they cannot get trapped beneath the lid.
The bottom of the toy chest should also be smaller than the total dimension so that the side and front panels will overlap and the bottom will fit inside.
Use the corner brackets and screws to secure each panel together. Once the chest is secure, attach the lid with the hinges of choice.
This is a basic toy chest design. The chest can also be customized with paint or by routering a decoration right into the wood. Also, handles can be made out of rope and secured to the chest sides by drilling small holes and inserting the rope, then knotting the ends.
If intricate designs or painting will be done to the toy chest, it may be easier to decorate the individual pieces prior to assembly. This allows the application of paint, stencils, stain or clear-coating before hardware is attached. It’s easier to maneuver individual pieces rather than the completed chest.
Involve children in the design of the toy chest. Gear it to the theme of the bedroom. If it will be in a family area, design it so it coincides with furniture already in the space.

GIFT IDEAS FOR THE HOUSEHOLD HANDYMAN
The American Woodshop host Scott Phillips makes quick work of drilling pocket holes for joinery with a handy jig.
Many homeowners have taken cues from the recession and are choosing to stay in their homes a little longer rather than sell in a buyers’ market. Those who want to make their current abodes more livable or attractive to future buyers may choose home improvements that raise the value and/or add more space. These options present great opportunities for gift givers wondering what to buy for the household handyman. For many, home improvement renovations have become do-it-yourself projects out of necessity, as DIY is often more cost-effective than hiring a contractor. However, projects can go awry and cost more money in the long run unless the right tools and techniques are used. Gift givers should select tools that will offer the most bang for their buck and help homeowners sail through many projects. Woodcraft offers these ideas for successful holiday gifting.
Shaping and DrillingWhether crafting furniture or sizing and shaping wood for various home repairs, quality routers, planers and jigs are needed for the fine-tuned precision these projects require. To polish off edges, add grooves or dadoes, or create a personalized design, choose the Porter-Cable Compact Router. DIYers can create an ultra-smooth surface with the Delta 13” Portable Thickness Planer. Its three-knife cutterhead offers a blade life three times longer than competitive three-knife planers. Select a Porter-Cable Quik Jig to substantially reduce the time required to drill the pocket holes used for joinery in some projects.
The Art of WoodturningFor centuries, woodworkers have enjoyed the feel of virgin wood in their hands and the pleasure derived by turning that piece of wood into an amazing piece of artwork. Check out the Easy Wood Tools Detailers in mini, mid-sized and full-sized models that are ideal for adding detail to projects such as bowls or chair stiles. Pair these detailers with other gouges, scrapers and lathe accessories for the hobbyist or professional woodturner on your gift list.
Expanding the WorkshopWhat DIY woodworking hobbyist couldn’t use a little more space in his or her workshop? While it’s not always possible to move up or out, keeping tools neat and portable can make maximizing space much easier. Moving large machinery around the shop can be a challenge, but a four-pack of WoodRiver Plate Mounted, Machine Leveling Casters can solve the problem by helping handymen to move, level and reduce the vibration of various shop machines. Likewise, the WoodRiver Adjustable Mobile Base moves and levels tools, enabling shop owners to get the most out of their existing space.
Workshop EssentialsEvery DIY woodworker needs to equip the workshop with some basic tools. To remove errant nails from wood, DIYers can use the Nail Jack Nail Puller or Nail Jack Nail Hunter. Projects can be kept secure by using the WoodRiver Universal Vise, and an 8” Pinnacle Arkansas Combo Stone is the ideal gift for keeping blades sharp to avoid injuries and kickback on machines. To learn more about these products and others, contact the Woodcraft store nearest you, visit www.woodcraft.com, or call (800) 535-4482.

Pet parents may resign themselves to the fact that hardwood floors aren’t practical. But that Dog-Proof Hardwood Floors doesn’t have to be the case. It’s possible to have and maintain hardwood floors and still enable pooches to enjoy rooms with wood floors.* Keep dogs’ nails trimmed short so that they do not scratch or scuff wood floors.* Dogs that tend to grow long fur between the pads of their feet may need to have that fur trimmed as short as possible. This will help improve the traction the dog will have when walking on the wood floors.* If dog bowls are kept on the floor, use a mat that will protect against spills, drips and slobber. Something that will not allow moisture to bleed through onto the floor is ideal, as is a mat that will contain spills.* Place runners in high-traffic areas so that the dogs have an easier time of walking from room to room.* Clean the bottom of paws when the dog comes inside from the yard so that dirt won’t mar or ruin the floors.* Choose distressed-looking floors, so if scratches resulting from dogs’ nails do occur, it will blend in with the flooring and not stick out like a sore thumb.* Ask to have a thick layer of clear-coating applied to the floors to further protect them.* Do not encourage doggie horseplay on the wood floors, even if it is humorous watching the pooch slide around and try to get footing.* Consider a floor wax product to improve a dogs’ traction on the floors and reduce their propensity to claw-in to get a good grip.
