From long forgotten times, Heaven and Hell fought each other and even the wiser of

the wisest believed that Earth is the middle line between the two supernatural worlds, a plece

where angels and demons fight relentlessly for the future fate of humanity. But back in the

present, the team of developers at Ninja Theory wasn’t satisfied just with that much of a

legend and thought of expanding it with a new element: a handsome young man that has a

dark secret, something that even he doesn’t suspect it.

Yes my good folks out there, Dante is back, but not as you might remember him

because Devil may Cry is a reboot, a reenactment of an older story that walks away from the

classic gothic look in favor of a more contemporary universe. And yet, as modern as it might

look, this world is still prone to the influence of demons more eager than ever to have power

and control over the human kind.

In this weird space where Earth has became something of a harvesting ground for the

human souls, Dante doesn’t seem to be of much help. In fact he’s drunk most of the time in

the middle of his caravan trailer, making a hell of an effort even for the simple task of seeing

who’s knocking at his door.

Evil on Earth

Mundus, remember thin name because he’s the bad guy here, the maddest of them all,

the devil, the master of the world. A dictator that hides in the shadows and controls

everything.

Having worldwide relations and controlling the biggest bank in the world: Silver Sack,

Mundus has enslaved humanity thru a special energy drink called Virility. This one will

allegedly melt away your fat and improve your…performances. But it also enslaves you.

And the world as we know it is joined in many places by a parallel universe called

Limbo where everything is ugly, altered and turned by the Devil.

Actually, the two worlds are so close one to the other that when Dante shatters his

enemies in Limbo, objects and places in the real world are also destroyed.

So who’s Dante?

If you have played another DmC game before, you might recall that Dante isn’t actually

human. Born from an Angel mother and a Demon father, the young boy posseses

supernatural powers that allowed him to survive countless of demons and destroy a great deal

of what the Devil managed to build on Earth.

Still, it is worthy of mentioning that in Devil may Cry, Dante remains in his human

condition at all times, without assuming his demon form. But even so, beside him you will

see his classis weapons: Rebellion the sword and Ebony&Ivory, his dual pistols. But

advancing from one level to the next, Dante will evolve into something better. A better

fighter with increased abilities and skills.

Gameplay

Despite the fact that the developers at Ninja Theory turned DmC in a more European

styled game, the truth is that little has changed in terms of gameplay.

Back to the series’ origins, Dante will discover that he’s not quite alone in the world

and that he has a brother: Vergil, from whom he was separated as a kid. And at some points it

becomes interesting how the two brothers interact with each other even if for most of the time

Dante will be the one fighting the demons.

And speaking of that, the fighting scenes have become more spectacular than ever, with

long combos made with one or more weapons. Each hit is noted with a number of points and

then turned into a category from A to D: from Anarchist to Cruel or Dull. Anyway, the points

you score always appear on screen as a stimulating to try more and more imaginative

combos.

As for the game’s arsenal, that not going to be something of an issue as Dante will

benefit from many upgrades to his sword and guns. Powers originated both from angelic and

demonic sources allowing the young nephilim to execute more and more types of demons.

Between Limbo and Earth

I must say that the Brithish devs did an excellent job in maintaining the original

atmosphere of the series without ruining any of the things that the previous installments

brought to this franchise.

Earth is a sad place, dominated by shades of gray and black where there’s nothing more

than sadness. And to be quite fair, the only color touches I’ve seen are more related to the

Virility publicity panels. It’s a world lead and controlled by evil a thing that the graphics tend

to render quite well.

On the other hand, Limbo is on the opposite corner, with strong colors, mostly with

shades of red, even a bit too much red here and there if you would ask me. But anyway, the

thing is that in Limbo nothing is faded but everything looks a bit weird, out of phase..

In the end

You don’t have to be an expert to understand that this game is good but at the same

time, the most obvious thing is that the guys at Ninja Theory were quite cautious in passing

over a certain line and diverting too much from the previous installments of the game.

They’ve kept most of the elements that turned DmC into such a good franchise and

built further using these solid bricks.

The result is surprisingly good and fresh and it will do quite well both for those who

have played another DmC game before and for those that have no idea about the background

story of this game.

No doubt, there are elements that could have been done better but that’s a fact for most

of the modern games so I can’t say more than this: It’s good game and it’s worth playing.
