At the dawn of the new age, as this exotic practice travelled across the industrialized nations of America and Europe, yoga was adorned and enriched with the grace & inwardness of the east combined with the exactitude & precision of the west. Using its characteristic meticulousness and a relentless pursuit of perfection, the global nations broke down all the poses, morphing them into activities that can be taught to anyone willing to learn.

At Deva Matha Central School, Yoga is an integral part of the school curriculum from Class I – X. Practice of Yoga from childhood prepares our students to embrace life in totality instead of grappling with adversities and challenges. DMCS students have irrefutably learnt the fact that the practice of yoga is a journey, and not a destination.

Let’s together have a great year 2018-19 !

EDITORIAL BOARDDeva Matha Central School

At the end of the 19th century, the holistic practice of yoga travelled towards west, from India - when Swami Vivekananda mesmerized the audience with his famous speech. This single act by an Indian mystic transformed into an incredible path, paving the way for ornamenting yoga in the west.

The journey of yoga, however, began in the distant past, when a few enlightened mavericks discovered a way to awaken higher levels of consciousness and become one with their inner self. It was a higher age when intuition was sharper than the intellect. Through graceful movements and elegant poses, ancient yogis harnessed the innate energy, present in every tissue of the body and allowed it to course freely, resulting in perfect harmony of body and stillness of mind with the rest of nature, resulting in deep inner communion.

THE JOURNEY OF YOGA - EAST TO WEST AND BACK TO ORIGIN

BANGALORE

When was the last time you visited Bangalore. We as residents of the city are extremely proud of the ‘city of flowers’ we live in. Popularly known as the ‘IT Hub and Silicon Valley’ of the world, Bangalore stands tall as India’s fastest growing city. It covers nearly 120 square kilometres and is India’s fifth largest city, in terms of population. The Bangalore Palace, City High Court, Government Museum, Vidhan Soudha, Lal Bagh and Cubbon Park form the most striking tourist attractions of the city. If you are visiting Bangalore from any other city, please remember to relish the local meals at Vidyarthi Bhawan, Coffee at MTR, Benne Masala Dosa at CTR, Malleshwaram, Apple pie at ‘The Only Place’ and Pasta at Toscano. These are my personal favourites, if you have more on the list - share them with the Gems Team !

MY FAVOURITE AUTHOR

BERMUDA TRIANGLEBermuda Triangle, also known as The Devil’s triangle, is an imaginary triangle located in the Atlantic Ocean that connects Florida, Bermuda and Puerto Rico. It is known around the world as a place with a mysterious force that causes ships and planes to vanish, without a trace! For instance - Star Tiger, a British Airlines passenger plane lost all radio contact with the coast while flying over the Bermuda Triangle. Search planes, sent to investigate about the missing aircraft, too, were never heard of again. Many have come up with a scientific explanation for these incidents; they believe that the Earth’s magnetic field makes compasses deflect, which in turn causes the ships to lose their direction. Besides this, many believe that there are Supernatural forces involved. However, we do not yet have a proper explanation for these mysterious happenings, and Bermuda Triangle still continues to be one of the perplexing places in the world, which still leaves many unanswered questions.

Agatha Christie, (15. 09. 1890 – 12. 01. 1976) was an English writer, also known as ‘The Queen of Crime’. Her famous fictional detective is Hercule Poirot. Her first book ‘Mysterious Affair At Styles’ introduced her to the world. She has written more than 80 crime novels and short stories collections, 19 plays and six novels written under the name of Mary Westmacott. Her most famous book was - ‘And Then There Were None’ and more than a lakh copies were sold. Her other breathtaking books are ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ and ‘Murder of Roger Ackroyd.’

My favourite book is ‘And Then There Were None’, as it has a great suspense, a perfect combination of thriller and detective story, a complete original idea and a fantastic adventure. It simply takes you to the world of mystery and I love the characters defined. The book blew my mind and I was amazed at how a writer could come up with such a baffling plot.

Readers, you will be amazed to know that she is the most widely published author of all times, and in any language, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare.

MY TORCH BEARER

BARBEQUE CHICKEN

Muhammed Ali (Cassius clay) is my undisputed champion! Born in Louisville, Kentucky, United States on 17 January 1942, this superlative athlete raised the bar of physical endurance and physical fitness. Though Muhammad Ali was an American professional boxer, he was also a philanthropist by choice. He changed the dimension of the Boxing game and till date is treated as indisputable king of Boxing Sports.

Ali won gold medal in the light heavy weight division at the

young age of 18 and moved on to win WBA (World Boxing Association) and WBC (World Boxing Council) heavyweight titles. As one of the leading heavy weight boxers of 20th century, he still remains the only three-times winner and champion. He acclaimed multiple titles in Boxing and won the hearts of millions across the world. This legendary sports figure is undoubtedly numero uno in his field and my torch bearer.

BRAVEHEART – HALL OF FAMEMamata Dalai is the youngest recipient of the National Bravery Award for the year 2017. She belongs to Kendrapara district of Odisha. She was felicitated by our honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. 6 year old Mamata and her sister, Asanti were playing in a pond near their house. A huge five feet long crocodile, which had strayed, suddenly emerged out of the water and grabbed Asanti by her hand.Instead of getting scared and bolting away, Mamata seized her kin’s hand and pulled her out of the crocodile’s jaws. Though young, by sheer determination, she held on and her loud shrieks attracted the attention of nearby villagers. The beast lost its grip on Asanti and slipped back into the water. Later on, it was caught by the forest officials. It gave me goose bumps when I learnt about this brave heart girl. Whenever I am scared or anxious, Mamata’s incredible feat pumps courage into my heart. My silent applaud to this young hero. DMCS offers deepest regards to such a young brave heart.

QUALITY INITIATIVEHonesty CounterAs a part of Quality Initiative drive, Deva Matha Central School, Vidyaranyapura, has been motivating its students since years to practice ‘Honesty’ by having an “Honesty Counter” in the school campus. Stationery items like pen, erasers, pencils and sharpeners are displayed near Front Office lobby under the portrait of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Students who are in need of pencil box items are expected to deposit money worth the value of things they choose to buy. There are neither CCTV cameras nor office personnel watching over them while they do the purchase. This whole exercise is to instil a value system in children from the earliest age. It gives us immense pleasure and pride to state that not a single day has gone without accounts of
