Extrusion processes are particularly sensitive to voltage sags and outages. Protection is available with PCS100 Active Voltage Conditioners and UPS (LV and MV). Their rugged designs and very high efficiencies (typically >99%) make them ideal solutions.

PCS100 case studiesNKOSSA II

• Two PCS100 1650 kVA SFC units were commissioned to shift power to and from 60 Hz to 50 Hz frequencies, linking LPG floating storage and off-loading vessel NKOSSA II with its connecting production platform

• Customer reference: “I am glad to inform you that the project onboard Nkossa II is now in operation, and the static frequency converter system – rated 3 MW –is operating fully according to the expectations and technical specifications”. (A.P Moeller-Maersk)

• Application is a little different as the vessel will operate most equipment at 50 Hz from gas turbine generators, but some of the ship’s equipment requires a 60 Hz supply

• Reduces local carbon dioxide emissions• Use of shore-to-ship power in preference to on-board

diesel generators helps to lessen sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions

• Helps with the reduction in low frequency noise and vibrations

• Eliminating voltage dips for Sibur Plastic’s workshop, “Styrene” in Russia. This solution is increasing the reliability and continuity of the factory’s power supply by 100 percent, and ensuring Sibur’s resources are protected

• Four 330 kVA PCS100 AVCs, which were installed on substations that supplied power to the workshop.

• Result: ABB’s solution enabled the production line to operate seamlessly, even after 15 power quality events (mainly dips with different depths) were reported

• Two PCS100 AVCs to eliminate voltage sags caused by the external power grid which was caused by man-made and natural factors

• Over a period of operation at Gubkinskiy GPP, ABB’s PCS100 AVC avoided a number of potential shutdowns caused by voltage sags by the external grid, reducing lost production and financial costs of the plant
