How do I know which pest I have?

There are many ways to find out what kind of pest you have. Let us begin with theimmediate threat inside the home. Bed Bugs, which are inside of mattresses. Then there are ants, scorpions, spiders and other pests that feed off each other

inside and outside of the home. Birds and pigeons are often a problem forcommercial buildings. However, we do serve residential areas.

ScorpionsScorpions have been around ever since the Paleozoic times, aging them over 400million years old. However, still to this day they are known for their painful stings

and scary appearance. Just in the last few hundred years have scientist developedan understanding of their role in the desert ecosystem.

Scorpions are venomous arthropods in the class Arachnida, relatives of spiders, solpugids, pseudoscorpions, mites, ticks, etc. They have eight legs, a long tail and

a pair of pedipalps for capturing prey. At the end of the tail they are equippedwith a stinger, fully loaded by a venom producing gland.

There are over 1400 species recognized today ranging from locations all over the

globe. Most scorpions are adapted to live in deserts such as the Mohave, Saharaand Kalahari. A smaller percentage lives among the rainforests of Asia and Africa.Regardless of where the scorpion resides they key to their existence is all thesame, the skilled art of an ambush predator.

Many enthusiasts, scientists and invertebrate dealers (especially in Arizona) use acommon, universal and easy to understand tool that classifies the venom ofscorpions. It is a simple numerical scale of 1-5 as shown below.

Level 1 (Virtually Harmless to Humans) Level 5 (Extremely Dangerous if notDeadly to Humans)

All scorpions found in the United States fall at or below level 3. The Arizona barkscorpion Centruroides exilicauda is the highest the country has at level 3.However, in many states including Arizona, level 4 and 5 scorpions are legal forpossession. These scorpions include yellow fat-tails, black fat-tails, death stalkers, and many others. They are extremely aggressive and will immediately posture in

strike position upon irritation. Remember, one sting from a level 5 scorpion canand will most likely be fatal!

Arizona Bark Scorpion Scientific Name: Centruroides exilicaudaAdult Size: 2 -3 Color: well distributed sandy yellow color, some with reddish pigmentVenom: level 3 !!!

Arizona bark scorpions Centruroides exilicauda are the most abundant and heavilyencountered. They are also the most dangerous in the country. Small in girth, they have the ability to reach 3 inches in length and move very fast. They range allaround the Phoenix area and in the majority of the state. They are one of the fewspecies of scorpion that often climb the stucco walls of buildings and homes. Thisis a tactic they use for hunting small insects at night. Bark scorpions have a bad

reputation with humans. There are many common scenarios that happenrepeatedly which are easy to avoid. Most of them involve someone walkingthrough the house at night or their neighb or cleaning up that pile of wood thatsbeen sitting out back for a year. Bark scorpions are particularly nervous creaturesthat strike first then run away after youre jumping up in down in agony. So itsbest to plug in the old noggin and pay better attention next time you are fishingyour hands around something.

Arizona Desert Hairy Scorpion Scientific Name: Hadrurus arizonensisAdult Size: 3 -5 Color: dark brown thorax with light yellow legs, tail, claws

    Venom: level 1

Known for its voluptuous size and respectable length the Desert Hairy scorpionHadrurus arizonensis is the largest found in United States. Adult size can scale to 4sometimes 5 inches. Ranging throughout many low land areas where sand isabundant and around populated locations as well. As a whole this species is nottoo hard to find. However, due to their shy demeanor finding one generallyrequires a little searching. Desert Harries prefer hiding during the day under rocks

and other obstructions as they are nocturnal. Once darkness falls activity willspike as they venture out to feed.

Unlike pesky bark scorpions that are commonly found on building walls ofresidential areas Hairy scorpions prefer to stay low to the ground and out of theway. Their role around our living areas should be valued due to their veraciousappetites. They will literally attempt to eat any living creature their size or smallerincluding the not so innocent bark scorpion. Normal diet involves spiders, centipedes, small vertebrates, scorpions, crickets, and many others.

For two reasons the venom associated with this species is quite harmless tohumans. First, given that whoever is stung is not allergic, the sting from a DesertHairy is similar to that of a bees and is quite harmless. A mild but irritatingreaction with swelling can be expected. All Desert Hairy scorpions are considered

Vinegaroon (not a scorpion) Scientific Name: Mastigoproctus giganteusAdult Size: 4 -6 Color: Black with lighter gray in-between thorax and abdomen and on abdomensidesVenom: (None) Uses acid based vinegar as a defense mechanism

The Vinegaroon is a true sheep in wolfs clothing. These gentle giants areharmless only emitting the potent smell of vinegar when distressed. Also calledWhip Scorpions from the skinny tail they use to do it with. Many of timesmistaken as scorpions these arachnids are squished and stomped for no reason. However, they are more a friend to humans for eating up the pesky insects that

    get in the house.

Like a scorpion they have eight legs. Two of which are modified for sensory.Vinegaroons also use pedipalps as a means for catching prey. They are heavyburrowers and are only seen out at night. Due to their calm disposition they makewonderful pets for any bug enthusiast.

DIY Scorpion ControlThe scorpions prime motive is food. Take away the food and you get rid of thescorpions. Scorpions will forage for food at night. They are nocturnal creatures.During the daytime scorpions can be found in dark areas. They can squeeze in, outand under small areas.

Beware of the following areas: Under boards, piles of wood, mulch, trash, debris, block fencing, etc

Scorpions feed off all insects and pests, even mice. They can go on for monthswithout ever eating anything. Scorpions use the ambush, shock and awe methodto kill prey. Scorpions have little hairs on their legs that detect vibration. This ishow they are able to move around with precision.

Scorpions are excellent climbers. If you have a scorpion infestation be sure to putyour bed legs in wide mouthed jars as to keep the scorpion from climbing up thebed. Scorpions are excellent climbers but cannot climb on glass.

Here are some simple do it yourself scorpion control repellent methods:

1- Mow grass, keep brush landscape and vegetation at least eighteen-inches awayfrom your home. This keeps general pests away from your home, makes it easierto manage, easier to maintain and isolates the scorpion.

2- Caulk and weather-strip the entire home including windows. Make sure thatthere is no room for the scorpion to sneak in, under or through.

3- Scorpions are blind to ultra-violent light. Plus they glow in the dark. Equipyourself with a black light, tweezers and a jar. Go outside at night and hunt themdown. Put them in the jar but remember they are sneaky pests. Set them free inthe desert or figure out a way to get rid of them off your property, alwayshumanely.

Make sure that there are no water leaks. Fix any plumbing in and around yourhome. Leaky faucets are bad!

Get rid of the scorpions food and you get rid of the scorpion.

During the day scorpions can be found in remote, dark, unoccupied areas such asattics, crawl spaces, garages and closets. Because scorpions avoid temperaturesover 100 degrees Fahrenheit they migrate when one place becomes too hot, overthe other.

When sealing your home be sure to seal up the following areas:

Seal exterior base of home with clear silicone where the weep screed and stemwall meet.

Seal the overhang where the freezer boards meet.

    Re-screen breather holes at overhang.

Seal any AC lines, water spigots, exterior light fixtures, etc No leaky pipes!

Seal the garage walls where steam wall and sheet rock base meets.

Remember to seal exterior and interior mechanical rooms.

Screen the exhaust fans located in bathrooms and laundry rooms with nylonscreening.

Check between the air ducts and drywall behind air vents and seal open cracks.

Seal kitchen and bathroom pipes, toilet fixtures and showerheads.

    Touch-up weather-strip on exterior doors.

    Screen window weep-holes as needed.

Honey BeesThe honeybee is like any other species of bee around the globe. The mainpurpose of the bee is to collect nectar and spread the flowers seed so that theflower can grow elsewhere. The honeybee brings nectar back to the beehive and

shares the food with the beehive. Because the queen bee gives birth to newoffspring it is important to feed the offspring as to keep the hive alive andprosperous.

Honeybees live away from residential areas. If you find a beehive around yourhome it is more than likely an Africanized bee hive. Just as you are afraid of thebee, the bee is afraid of you. That is how the honeybee responds to you. TheAfrican honeybee doesnt care just as long as it can find an a bundant amount of

nectar.Like any bee, the honeybee collects nectar in flowers during the springtime. Beesare important to the eco-system by spreading flower pollen to help spread thegrowth of flowers, however, they become a nuisance when they build hives in or

near around your home becoming a threat from nature rather than a part ofnature.

If you are stung by a honey or africanized bee, stay calm. If you are stung by a

swarm of bees call the nearest poison control center (602) 253-3334 or visit thenearest posion control center. For directions Google: Poison Control Center (youcity and state.) for the quickest results.

There is a huge difference between honeybees and Africanized honeybees. Pleasepay close attention in order to distinguish which kind of bee control problem youhave. The breeding of the European honeybee and Brazilian honeybee createdthe African honeybee. African honeybees are much more aggressive and deadlythan the regular honeybee. This is why they are often referred to as the kille rbee.

The honeybees hive is made of wax. The hive is where the drone bees, workerbees and mother queen bee call home. Each cell with in the hive has a hexagonalshape and these cells are used to harvest eggs and food.

Drone Bee is a bee that also works like the worker bee but within the hive. Dronebees build and organize beehives and cells to keep the hive functioning in an

    orderly fashion.

Queen Bee does all the birthing, as the queen bee is the most important bee ofthe entire hive. The hive works and breathes around her.

DIY Honey Bees:Do Not attempt to remove bees on your own is probably the best advice one

can give. But if you must remove a hive here is a basic, not all inclusive, protocol.

#1) cover up completely. All skin must be completely covered and cut off. Beescan crawl up a sleeve between a glove and shirt.

    12/23

    P a g e | 12

#2) wait until its dark. Bees dont fly as much at night.

#3) Spray the hive with bee specific insecticide. Then, making sure youre notfollowed by any bees, go back to your home and wait an hour for the bees to die

    off.

#4) Take shears and cut the hive down. Burn the entire hive, bees, and every signof them in a fire.

#5) any remaining signs of bees may attract other bees. Remember to always becompletely covered up.

Bed Bug InformationLets say right off the bat that bed bugs are by far the worst pest of its kind. Bedbugs will lay eggs in mattresses, furniture, pictures and any place it can hide togive birth to a family. Bed bugs become adults after five or so blood feasts. That isthe bed bug fills its inflatable body up with blood from the host. It is said that thebed bug becomes a totally different pest at that time.

There has been a rise in bed bug infestations in Phoenix AZ due to the fact thatthe old synthetic pesticides used are no longer taking an effect on the new breedof bed bugs. The only way to get rid of them is by keeping as clean as possible.

Bed Bugs are nocturnal creatures meaning they come out at night. Since they areblood-sucking creatures they will feed at night.

Be sure to check your mattress for any bed bug infestations that are otherwiselooked over. Remember, when buying a new mattress to inspect it of any bed bug

infestation. Vacuum the mattress and clean it. Remember to check the box springon which the mattress rests on.

Taking furniture apart such as drawers from cabinets to inspect if there are bedbugs is also the fastest way in finding the culprit to the infestation.

Bed bugs in Phoenix AZ can also be found behind baseboards and carpet stays. The edge of the carpet and where the ceiling and walls meet as well as behindcrevices such as light switches and other appliances are a great hiding spot forthese pests.

If you find bed bugs in your home or bites on your body make sure to call theprofessionals at Magic Pest Control.

Bed Bugs have become quite a problem all over the United States of America.Once thought to be removed from anywhere in North America, bed bugs havemade their way back into hotels, motels, and homes all around. Dont le t theirname full you. You can have bed bugs anywhere in a room (behind pictureshanging on the wall or in popcorn ceilings) because the attractant is not the beditself but the warm blooded person that lays in it quietly for hours at a time. Bedbugs once eradicated by a wide spectrum of pesticides are now slipping throughthe cracks and making their way back in large numbers. With concerns of healthand the environment, many of the pesticides that once worked to rid bed bugs, are now not used and removed from the market altogether.

Bed Bugs are reddish brown in color, oval in shape, and can grow to a quarter ofan inch long. A great example of size is an apple seed. These bugs are winglessand survive by sucking blood from animal and human. They hide in mattresses, carpets, behind paint and wallpaper, in crevices of wooden furniture or cracks in abeds headboard. These bugs are nocturnal and bite people while they aresleeping in the early hours of the morning. Bed bugs are travelers and commonlyfound in hotels; travelers of all kinds are susceptible to bringing them backunknowingly

What can we do to keep them away from our homes and our loved ones? Look

around. Bed bugs are large enough to see. Look under the mattress and in theseams. Check around bed frames and where paint is peeling or cracks are present.Bed bugs can even hide behind picture frames. Check your mattress and in theseams keeping an eye out for the bugs themselves or blood staining they leavebehind

Clutter can be a big factor in the home for bed bugs. By reducing clutter, you willminimize hiding places for the bed bug. Keep things put away, throwaway trash, and vacuum carpets, baseboards, and the mattress itself. Wash sheets in hotwater. Avoid piling clothes, blankets, etc on the floor and around your bed. Pullthe bed frame a couple of inches away from the wall.

One of the most popular places bed bugs are found is in hotel rooms. Nowadayswe travel for work and for leisure. The best way to prevent bed bugs in yourhome is not to bring them home.

Before you book any hotel, vacation rental, or cruise ship, check for complaintsfrom other travelers. A great place to find out is through the Internet. TripAdvisor, the bed bug registry, and bedbugger.com are all resources. This doesnot guarantee no bed bugs, but it a great tool. When traveling, inspect themattress removing the sheets and checking in the seams. Inspect and move theheadboard and check side tables. You are looking for the bed bugs themselves orstaining of brownish red or black color, a dried bloodstain. If you notice a powderresidue in the drawers, chances are they have been treated for bed bugs.

Place all dirty laundry in a sealed plastic bag to avoid contaminating other clothingif you came in contact with bed bugs. When arriving home from traveling, unpacksuitcases in the garage. Wash all clothing in HOT water. Place clean clothing in thedryer on high heat. Using caution when traveling will make for a safe homeenvironment

    SpidersGeneral Information regarding Spiders

Spiders feed off insects, which make them important to the eco-system. Spidersproduce silk and this is what they use to weave webs. Spiders produce silk formany reasons. Spiders use silk for all purposes. They use brush, ground and Arialwebs for protection and hunting.

The spinneret glands located in the abdomen area of the spider creates silkenthread. There are different types of silk thread that is produced by each spider fortheir own unique purpose (some have more than one). The tensile strength ofspider silk is greater than the same weight of steel and has great elasticity.

A spider web allows the spider to catch prey without expending so much energyrunning it down. Weaving the web is what takes up the spiders energy. Aftercatching the prey in the spider web the spider will then inject digestive enzymesin to the prey with their fangs. Once this is done the spider can feed off theliquefied tissue of its prey leaving an exoskeleton hallowed out remain.

The most common types of spiders in AZ are brown recluse, tarantula and blackwidow.

    3 steps to spider control

    1) Get regular pest control

    2) Kill spiders and take down webs.

    3) Trim back trees and bushes. Keep shrubs away from home. Seal homeproperly to keep bugs out.

SnakesArizona is warm throughout the year. Because of this, we are home to many typesof snakes and reptiles. Many of our homes are built on or near wild land. Withsuch a large number of desert parks, homes built on and near mountain areas, and hiking trails so close encounters with snakes can be likely. Snakes serve a

purpose by keeping rodent populations down cutting down destruction anddisease; however; we dont want them as houseguests.

First we will talk about types of snakes you may encounter in Arizona. Arizonais home to a large variety of snakes, most being desert snakes and the mostcommon being the rattlesnake. The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake is the

most widely known rattlesnake, but the truth is, there are many types ofrattlesnakes in the valley of the sun. You may not know you have encountered arattlesnake until you hear the rattling sound. There are actually approximately 36types of rattlesnakes in North and South America. 13 of that live right here inArizona, more than any other state. The rattlesnake has a heat sensing organ usedto locate prey. Their prey includes birds, reptiles, and small amphibians. Less than1% of rattlesnake bites result in death. The most poisonous rattlesnake is theWestern Diamondback. Its color ranges from brown to gray to pinkish. The back islined with dark diamond-shaped blotches outlined by lighter color scales. Its headhas two dark stripes on each side of its face that run diagonal from eyes to jaws. Its head is shaped like a spade. It bites more hu mans each year than any othersnake. It coils, will rattle fearlessly, and stand its ground. It hunts in the lateevening and into the early morning.

Another snake living in Arizona is called the Coral Snake. Unlike the rattlesnakewhich can grow up to seven feet long, the coral snake will only grow 12 to 20inches long, but is very poisonous. Generally the coral snake is not deadly toadults, but can prove deadly to children. This snake is very colorful with stripes ofred, black, and yellow. There are some other types of snakes with this commoncoloring, but the coral snake can be identified by the yellow stripe always beingnext to the red stripe. If either an adult or child is bitten by this type of snake, it isimperative that they go to the hospital right away. To be safe, keep distancesbetween any types of snake.

The Arizona King Snake is another type of desert snake calling Arizona home. Onetype of Arizona King is similar in color to the Coral Snake, but the most commoncoloring for this snake is black and white. This type of snake is not poisonous, butbecause it can resemble the Coral Snake, it is best to stay away. The King Snake

kills its prey by constricting them like a Boa. They eat birds, lizards, as well asother snakes.

The largest of the snakes found in Arizona is the Gopher Snake. They can grow tobe 8 feet long. They will hunt during the day if it is cool enough and at night as weheat up. This snake is not dangerous to us and in fact is considered helpful by

controlling the rodent population. Arizona has many types of desert snakes, manyof them considered harmless. You must know that snakebite can be dangerous.Even if the snake is not venomous, you can develop an infection.

So, what should you do if you encounter a snake and are bitten? Look forsymptoms such as if the area the bite begins to swell or change color. If thatoccurs the snake most likely was venomous. Keep the area still; immobilize thearea with a splint made from a board, magazine, or other stiff material. Do not tietoo tight. Remove any jewelry or constricting items near the bite site. Keep thearea of the bite lower than the heart. Go to the hospital, or contact ArizonaPoison Control Center.

If bitten by a rattlesnake, no not use ice to cool the bite, do not cut open the bitearea and suck the venom, and do not cut off blood flow. Avoid rattlesnakesaltogether. Keep your hands and feet away from tall grass, areas where youcannot see, and between rocks. How can one keep desert snakes away from your home? First, you will want to ridtheir food source, eliminating rodents from around your home. Move anywoodpiles and throw junk from your yard eliminating potential homes for thesnakes. Walls will deter snakes from your property. Make sure the walls sink into

the ground and fill any tunnels. Install gates snuggly against the ground. Keepyour walkways and patios free from brush. Keep pathways and yards lit.

If you do encounter a snake, follow these steps to keep safe. In deserts, parks, orundeveloped areas, leave the snakes alone, restrain children and pets, and warnothers in the area. If the snake is in a residential area, keep your distance and tryto identify the snake. Do not try to kill or capture the snake. Callyour pest control company or Arizona Animal Control, or let the snake return toits home in the desert. If the is one that is poisonous, and it is located in yourhome, garage, or outdoor areas, call the Fire Departments non -emergencynumber. Keep an eye on its movement.

TermitesSubterranean termites get their name for the fact that they live in contact withsoil as their source of moisture. The Desert Subterranean termite is a termitefound in Arizona. The Desert Sub lives in the areas that experience dry and evenarid conditions. They can be found in the lower deserts of Mexico, SouthernCalifornia, and Arizona. The desert subterranean has some differentcharacteristics and behaviors then that of other subterranean termites.

The desert subterranean termite is able to survive in drier conditions. They aresmaller in size to other types of subterranean termites giving them the ability to

forage under drier conditions. The subterranean termite builds mud tunnels fromsoil to wood. This allows them to keep contact with the soil at all times. Thedesert subterranean termites mud tunnel is lighter in color, more circular, andnarrow as compared to other types of subterranean termites. They will also buildtheir mud tunnels as free hanging tubes from ceilings, shelves, and overhangs. These tubes protect the termites from heat and cold they encounter above theground. Underground the soil makes temperatures cool. They use the mudtunnels to make conditions constant.

The Desert Subterranean termite prefers spring wood making damaged woodlook layered. Sometimes you will see soil present in the tunnels. They aredependent on moisture. They attack sound dry wood and a sign of their presencewill be soil and feces within the wood. They present much like what a honeycombwould look like in wood. These termites will swarm during the monsoon months. They have no eyes andare poor fliers. Many fall prey to birds and lizards, yet they do manage to be a

significant pest. They swarm at night during the rainy season from July toSeptember, usually after it rains. They are most visible when they are swarming.

They have been known to attack various types of wood, including cactus ribs, desert trees, and human structures such as utility poles, posts, and structuraltimbers both dead and healthy. They prefer shaded areas and areas made wet by

irrigation. They can be extremely destructive to structural timbers in homes, sheds, and other buildings. They find their way into the home by squeezingthrough cracks in the foundation and other things. Because they are smaller thanother termite types, they can get through small cracks others cannot. A thoroughinspection by a termite control specialist is the first and most important step inprotecting your property. It is best to ask experienced eyes to look and locateany possible areas where termites are present or where termites are likely toattack.
