10.9- Crises of the Cold War

• Cuba and its leader, Fidel Castro, began forming an alliance with the Soviet Union.

• Before JFK became president the CIA had secretly trained and armed Cuban exiles.

• Kennedy approved- using the exiles to invade Cuba.

Bay of Pigs Invasion

• April 17, 1961- 1400 Cuban exiles landed at the Bay of Pigs to overthrow Castro

• Disaster struck as Kennedy cancelled air support for the exiles to keep the US involvement a secret.

• Most of the exiles were killed or captured.

Berlin

• JFK met with the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to discuss Berlin.

• The US refused to withdraw from Berlin.• The Soviet leader retaliated by constructing

the Berlin Wall.

Cuban Missile Crisis

• 1962- American intelligence agencies discovered that the Soviets were putting long-range missiles in Cuba.

• Kennedy ordered it stopped, but the work continued.

• Nuclear war was feared if missiles would be so close to US soil.

Cuban Missile Crisis

• Neither Kennedy nor Khrushchev wanted World War III.

• Kennedy decided on a blockade of Cuba and threatened war if the Soviets tried to get past the blockade.

• Kennedy agreed not to invade Cuba and to remove missiles from Turkey.

• The Soviets agreed to remove their missiles from Cuba.

Effects of the Cuban Missile Crisis

• This brought the world to the edge of nuclear war.

• Both sides agreed to work out a plan to ease tension.

• 1963- US and USSR agreed to ban the testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere.

• November 22, 1963- JFK was shot twice while riding in a presidential motorcade.

• Lee Harvey Oswald was accused of killing Kennedy- he was shot two days later by Jack Ruby.

• The Warren Commission- concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald was a lone-gunman but conspiracy theories still persist.

• Lyndon Johnson became president after JFK.
