Ottoman Empire & WWI• Ottoman Empire enters WWI

hoping to regain (get back) some of their “lost” empire.

• Unfortunately, the Ottomans picked the losing side of the war. (Central Powers)

• In 1917, when the war was over, France and Britain (Allied Powers-who won the war) agreed on how to divide up the Ottoman Empire.

Results of WWI & PartitioningWhen the Ottomans and the rest of the Central Powers lost…

– The government of the Ottoman Empire was ended

– Turkey was created out of the Ottoman Empire

– Previously Ottoman lands were given to France (Fr.) and Britain (Br.).• Br. And Fr. partitioned (divided) the Middle

East into countries: Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, etc,

• CREATES ARTIFICIAL POLITICAL BORDERS – that did not necessarily reflect the natural divisions in the regions- blended ethnic and religious groups.
