Situational Irony• an event turns out to be the exact opposite of what the

reader expects

• EX: a homeowner buys a gun to protect himself, but a criminal breaks into the house and uses that same weapon to injure the homeowner

Dramatic Irony• the reader knows something that the character does not

know

• EX: the audience sees the killer waiting behind the door, but the character does not know, so she proceeds down the hallway as if there is no danger, which creates tension and anxiety (suspense) for the audience
