• 5 major NOUN declensions
• 5 major cases: nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, and ablative (NOM, GEN, DAT, ACC, ABL)
• 3 possible genders: masculine, feminine, or neuter (m, f, or n)

• a. nom. sing. = miles
• b. gen. sing = militis
• i. drop the gen. sg. ending to find base (base = milit-)
• ii. used to determine the declension by looking at the gen. sg. ending (declension = 3rd)
• c. gender = masculine
• d. definition = soldier

• STEP 1: make sure you can visualize the GEN. SG. of the word aqua —> GEN SG = aquae
• STEP 2: DROP the -ae from aquae for the base —> BASE = aqu-
