Four Question Strategy

• What organisms are readily available for conducting investigations?

• What behavior are you choosing to observe?

• What will you compare? (species, time, age, individual, etc.)

• How can you measure or describe the comparison observations?

Questions that would help you answer your problem

1. Ask small questions that will help you answer your main problem

2. You may start your question with WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, WHO and HOW.

3. Go over your questions and try to eliminate questions that are not applicable.

4. Research for answers to your “small” questions.

Example: Key words from my problem

1. Basketball-(from newsdial.com) is a ball sport in which two teams of five players each try to score points by throwing a ball through a hoop.

2. Bounce-otherwise called dribbling, refers to the maneuvering of a ball around a defender through short skillful taps or kicks with either the legs (football/soccer), hands (basketball), stick (bandy) or swimming strokes (water polo). The purpose of such an action is to bring the ball past a defender legally and to create opportunities to score.

Questions I need to answer

From just the word basketball, I got the following information:

Wilson's top-of-the-line product is the SOLUTION ball, named for its ability to absorb moisture over the course of a game and retain its grip. The ball is the official ball of all NCAA postseason tournaments, most

notably the men's and women's Division I tournaments, and is used by many NCAA teams during the season as well by many high school

leagues.

Molten, a Japanese sporting goods manufacturer -Molten's top-of-the line product is the GL7/GL6, a leather ball with a distinctive 12-panel

design, a high-density cushioning foam below the surface and special soft rubber seams, a flatter pebbled finish providing increased contact

area and a flattened seam between the panels (called a "Full-Flat Seam",

Nike, as noted earlier, now has the contract to produce balls for ULEB (including the Euroleague). In the Philippines it is used in the NCAA and UAAP as the official ball of the

tournament

SpaldingAccording to the NBA, the new ball is composed of a

new material that offers better grip, feel, and consistency than the current leather ball. In 1970, the

ball was transitioned from a four panel to an eight panel ball, and the latest ball design is comprised of two interlocking, cross-shaped panels that Spalding

calls Cross Traxxion. The material is a microfiber composite with moisture management that is

supposed to provide better grip and feel. According to the NBA press release, the new composite material

eliminates the need for a break-in period, and provides greater consistency from ball to ball. In 2007,

Spalding became the Official Basketball Provider of the Ball4Real World Tour.[7]

What is the ball made of?

The ball is round and the outer casing should be either leather, rubber or other suitable synthetic material. Its circumference should be between 75 and 78cm (29.5 and 30.25 in) and its weight between 600 and 650gm (20 and 22oz). It should be inflated to a pressure so that when it is dropped from a height of 1.8m (6ft) (measured from the floor to the bottom of the ball) on to the playing surface, it will rebound to a height of between 1.2 and 1.4m (4ft and 4ft 7in), (measured to the top of the ball).

What makes a basketball dribble/bounce?

• Dribble the ball as quickly as possible in a figure 8 through and around the legs. Use the fingers when you dribble, and dribble very low and quickly. Switch from the right to the left and back to the right. Example: start with the right hand dribbling the ball in front and then dribble through your legs with your right hand, switch to your left hand and dribble from the back, around your left side to the front and back through you legs... then switch to your right hand behind the body and around the right side. Try to go as fast as possible, and your dribbling skills will improve with daily practice.

A basketball bounces because of the air and gravity. The air makes the ball bounce. When you bounce the ball the air does not want to stay up, it goes down. This is called Gravity. If you bounce the ball hard, it will go high. If you

make a small bounce, it won’t really bounce at all. “A basketball is elastic. Elasticity is an objects property of changing shape when the deforming force is removed.

When an elastic basketball hits a hard surface, it’s shape is deformed and kinetic energy is converted to and stored as potential energy. When the basketball returns to it’s original

shape, potential energy is reconverted to kinetic energy making the bounce.” says Thang Nguyen from Science

Net.

Where do you dribble basketball?

The basketball court is the playing surface, consisting of a rectangular floor with baskets at either end. In professional or organized basketball, especially when played indoors, it is usually made out of a hardwood, often maple, and highly polished. Other indoor surfaces include suspended plastic interlocking tiles from companies like Mateflex, Flex court, Rhino Court, Sport Court and VersaCourt International. Outdoor surfaces used include plastic interlocking tiles (suspended athletic courts), asphalt, blacktop, or similar materials are used. Amateur players would typically use tarmac as the surface.

Next Step

Summarize in your own words what you learned

During conference with student

Student explains what he/she learned from the research. Then..

Teacher: “After learning from your research, what is now your final problem?”

Student: (students is more interested in brands of balls used) “Does the brand of ball make a difference in the bouncing/dribbling of the ball?”

Page 17: Do Now: My question is “Why do basketballs dribble well?” a. What are the key words I need to define? b. What are questions I need to answer to help me

Next Step

Student continues researching on

a) similarities and differences in different brands of basketball and

b) what other researchers/players say about the bounce of different brands of basketballs

Background research also include Specific Information like:

* Results from other experiments similar to yours * Information from interviews with experts * Studies done by companies or consumer groups that relate to your problem * Information necessary to experiment safely

Example

From this: The ball is round and the outer casing should be either leather, rubber or other suitable

synthetic material.

I would write:

Specifications: round with outer casing to be either leather, rubber or other synthetic material

Circumference – 75 and 78cm

height when it rebounds – 1.2 and 1.4 m (dropped from a ht. of 1.8 m
