“Why do I study?” Lawrence Estorque Do you ever ask yourself the question “Why do I study?” or “What is the purpose of me studying these stuff?” Education was a prominent cultural institution used to perpetuate the prevailing values of a society. It nourishes the potential of a person and it is the one that made us different compare to other organism or species here in earth. For the past century, education evolves and the modern technique of teaching system was rooted in industrialism that aims to produce economically viable products- employable citizens. The changes to the system in the last 100+ years are simply experiments to ensure that graduates are prepared for the actual work force. I think and therefore I believe that education should be a process where students are allowed and guided to develop their own passion, critical thinking, compassion and orientation towards wisdom of their own choice to be used for timely action or actual problem. In short, to be able to analyze problems rationally and to come up with a solution there should be a purpose. But this purpose was not even the goal of education nowadays; students tend to study because of some reasons, like parents expectations, for a happy and stable life in the future and of course for money. It’s like being a robot that working for a certain goal but in contrast, not enjoying it. It’s one of the evolutions that modern education became, but still education is so important. It makes your dreams into reality, saves you from being fooled or cheated and many more. So for the new graduates of this school year, Congratulations! Because you passed the most difficult part of your life, you finished your education and now a degree holder.
