Speak to us about Getting Married in Church

If you were married in a civil ceremony, we invite you to con-sider making vows in church. The priests and deacon are willing to work with you. We invite all couples to visit FORMED.ORG and watch BELOVED – from the producers of the renowned SYMBOLON series – which explores the spir-itual and eternal reality behind "I Do." Beautifully filmed and fea-turing acclaimed marriage experts, BELOVED SPEAKS TO THE VERY HEART OF EVERY HUSBAND AND WIFE, BRINGING SACRAMEN-TAL TRUTH AND GOD-INFUSED LOVE INTO THE EVERYDAY CHAL-LENGES OF MARRIED LIFE. Beloved: Mystery & Meaning of Marriage includes six inspiring and informative videos you can view as a couple at home. To sign onto FORMED, check this bulletin for information about this FREE CATHOLIC WEB SERVICE.

ANNULMENTS Pope Francis overhauled the process of obtaining the Church Declaration of the Nullity of a Marriage that took place in a Catholic Church: -there is no fee for the process: -the NY Archdiocese can now handle the procedure, no mat-ter where in the world the Marriage took place; -the process is reduced to one step rather than a second review that was formerly required; -the application form to begin the process may be downloaded from the internet! If you were married in the Catholic Church and, regrettably, the Marriage has broken up, you are invited to speak with one of our priests or the deacon.

Do you ever take photos at parish events? If you would like to share photos you take at parish events with others, please send them to [email protected] or leave a CD or flash drive at the rectory for Noreen with your name and email and/or phone #. We would like to have them. As many as possible will be shared on the web-site. Others will be retained in the parish archives. The CD or flash drive can be returned to you.

Are You Dressed Properly for Mass? The warm weather is here and the “casual mood” joyfully de-scends upon us. However, we ask you to carefully consider your attire for Sunday Mass. Some questions to ask yourself: Is my dress appropriate for coming into the presence of the King? Is my appearance a distraction to my brothers and sisters during the Holy Sacrifice? Does my outfit express an understanding of the virtue of modesty? When non-Catholics see me going into and out of the church, do they get the impression from my de-portment and attire that I am a serious member of the One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church of Christ? Are they in-spired to even consider joining me?

Those who can help, please come by or call Bea 914 774 0048, Tere 914 629 9737 or Eileen 845 300-3089.

The Proper Way to Receive Holy Communion For the reception of Holy Communion, kneeling remains the universal norm of our Latin Rite. However, standing is permit-ted by the bishops of most places. When one receives standing, one is required to make a specific act of adoration before re-ceiving the Host or taking the Precious Blood. In the United States, the bishops have mandated a bow of the head as the required act of adoration. A genuflection is discouraged, be-cause of the obvious hazard to other people on line. While waiting for the person in front of you to receive, recol-lect yourself for a moment and bow your head as a gesture of adoration. Step up when it is your turn. Receiving the Sacred Host on the tongue is the normative way of receiving Holy Communion in the Latin Rite. After saying ”Amen” in response to the minister of Holy Communion, the communicant should open the mouth wide and extend the tongue far enough so that the Sacred Host can be placed upon it without danger of falling. Please note that it is important to extend the tongue, not just open the mouth. One has the option of receiving in the hand in some places. Communion in the hand is allowed in the United States by deci-sion of the American Bishops. If one is receiving in the hand the following is normative: upon approaching the minister of the Host, extend the hands in the middle of the chest. The left hand is extended; with the right hand under the left in support (left handed persons may wish to place the left hand under the right). In essence, a throne is formed in the sign of an X-cross to receive the Sacred Host. The response of “Amen” is given to the proclamation “The Body of Christ,” and the Host is re-ceived. The individual should then step to the side and receive the Host carefully and reverently. It is unseemly to “pop” the Host into the mouth as one walks away. Remember “Who” you are receiving! Please note that it is never acceptable to put out only one hand due to the danger of dropping the host. Those who do not have the easy use of both hands (or whose hands are not perfectly clean for whatever reason) should receive on the tongue. It is very important that all understand that one does not have the right to receive Holy Communion as one pleases. One may only receive in the manner dictated by Church Law. Only those practicing Catholics who are in the state of grace may receive Holy Communion. Being in the state of grace means not having knowledge of having committed any mortal sins (missing Mass on Sunday through your own fault is a violation of the Third Commandment and a mortal sin!). Those who are not in the state of grace must first be reconciled to God and the Church by means of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) be-fore presenting themselves for Holy Communion.

A Note about Becoming Sponsors For Baptism and Confirmation

It is a great honor to be asked to be a sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation. The role of a “godparent” is to be an “other parent” in matters of our holy Faith. That is why sponsors must be practicing Catholics, 16 years of age or older (14 years old in the Archdiocese of New York), having received Catholic Confirmation and currently living a good Christian moral life. If the sponsor is married, that person must be in a valid Catholic Church marriage. One sponsor is required for Confirmation. It is customary to have two for Baptism, in which case one must be male and the other female. Parents may not be sponsors. A baptized non-Catholic may replace the second Baptism sponsor as a Christian witness. Non-Christians may not be Sponsors. Former Catholics may not be sponsors. A nominated sponsor is asked to get certification from his/her current parish. This is a declaration by a priest/deacon that the individual is qualified to be a sponsor according to Church Law. To be so certified, the individual must be a current parishioner of the particular parish where the certification is being sought, and be known to the priest/deacon as being a faithful practicing Cath-olic, attending Mass there weekly. Those away at college or graduate school or in the military should seek certification from their campus ministries or chaplains. Unfortunately, at times, family members or friends are cho-sen to be sponsors with good intentions, but are found to be ineligible according to Church Law. Also, more and more, people seem to think that they are still “parishioners” of their childhood parish, where they attended school or received sacraments years ago, while no longer living in the area or attending Mass there regularly. It is important for all individuals to be active members of their local Catholic faith communities. Here, at Seton, Certificates of Sponsorship are giv-en by the pastor to registered members of the par-ish who are practicing Catholics, and who meet the above criteria. Please see the pastor after Mass on Saturday evening or Sunday to inquire about getting a certificate.

BANNS OF MATRIMONY Please remember in your prayers those who are to be joined in the Sacrament of Marriage in the next few weeks:
