John Gibson of Coalville loves walking, so when he found himself in terrible pain and discomfort in his legs and feet his lifestyle was badly affected. He couldn’t walk more than 100 yards without stopping to let his leg cramps fade. He says: “I would pretend to be looking in shop windows until it wore off.” Stairs were also a nightmare and he had to pull himself up.Now, thanks to the famous skills of Doctor Ye at Herbal Healing acupuncture in Coalville, at the clinic in Belvoir Road, John can go for long walks again and get upstairs with no problems.John explained his previous problems and how acupuncture had solved them. He says: “I fell over about three years ago. Afterwards I started to get a strange feeling under my feet, as if I was walking on waffles made of steel. Gradually my legs became painful and I didn’t feel in control of my joints.” When John first went to the clinic in February, it seemed as if his unusual symptoms may possibly indicate a more serious problem, such as MS, so before they treated him, Doctor Ye first ensured that John had already had all the NHS tests, scans, MRIs and blood tests and that all had been clear.

The first few treatments had a small effect, which John says, gradually got better and better. “After the fifth treatment I really noticed a huge difference. My feet in particular were 60 percent better and improving all the time.”John had been a keen motorcyclist for 40 years, but had to stop because of

his pain, cramps and balance. Now he has high hopes that he will be able to get back in the saddle soon. What is more, John says: “I love the acupuncture treatments, they’re so relaxing! The needles are very fine, not anything at all like the bigger needles of hypodermic syringes. If anyone is a bit dubious about acupuncture because they don’t like needles, they can rest assured these are not the same thing at all.”He adds: “Anyone who has thought about acupuncture and, for whatever reason, has decided it is not for them should always give it a go. It has done wonders for me and I don’t hesitate to recommend the amazing doctor here in Coalville.”

“I advise anyone currently experiencing pain to pick up the phone and call the acupuncture clinic on 01530 810888.”

JOHN WALKS TALL AGAIN, THANKS TO CLINIC

STRUGGLING FOR STORAGE SPACE IN YOUR HOME?

Candor Care – Customer Review Last June it became obvious that we wouldrequire a stairlift installing in our house as thestairs were becoming a problem.

Having spotted Candor’s advertisement in the Community Voice Ithought we should support a local company and decided to give thema try. It turned out to be the best decision we could have made as theservice we had from them was first class from start to finish.

Alan arrived at the appointed time to undertake an initial survey andonce that was completed he carefully explained the different optioni.e. if we wished to rent the equipment or alternatively if we wished topurchase one of their latest models?

Once the choice had been made an appointment was made for theinstallation and 2 days later on the due date the engineer arrived andwithin two hours our stair lift was up and running. The stairlift wasfixed to the stair treads and not to the wall so the installation wasn’tdisruptive and left no mess.

The stairlift continued to run without problem and we found this to bea wonderful benefit. Candor did contact us over the next few days tosee if things were running smoothly and to remind us about theircomprehensive back up service should we encounter any problems(which we didn’t).

All in all, from start to finish the service we had was amazing. Withtheir warm, friendly approach we felt that at all times we were in thehands of people who cared.

The Mighty Mini Originally launched in 1959, the Mini was something of a revolution withits transverse engine, front wheel drive and gearbox located in thesump. This layout gave nearly 80% of the total area over to passengerand luggage space.

It is fair to say that this setup influenced a whole generation of othe so called 'super mini's' suchas the Ford Fiesta and VW Golf. Intended to be marketed as a 'shoppers car', motoring journalistsquickly spotted it's sporting potential. With a wheel at each corner it came with unrivelledcornering and handling and 'souped up' versions were soon appearing in races and rallies .

This led BMC to introduce its famous Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper 'S' which went on to win the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964 ( driven by PaddyHopkirk and co driver Harry Lidon). The Mini also went on to have several derivitives such as a pick up, van , mini clubman and estate not tomention the famous Mini Moke. My mini is a 1994 model Mayfair with a 1275cc petrol injected engine. I purchased this three years ago froma young lady in Whitwick who's father , an engineer at Anderson Commercials had maintained it in tip top condition. All I have done is add aset of 'Italian Job' spotlights to the front and the car continues to be a delight to drive. It is a particular hit with my grandkids who say they feel'cool' when they accompany me on trips and love the admiring glances it gets.

Purchasing the Mini was actually a trip down memory lane for me as it was a brand new Teal Blue Mini 1000, registration LFP 286L that mydear wife and I purchased when we were first married in 1972. We just thought it was wonderful and I have so many happy memories of thatcar. It transported four adults and all their luggage down to Teignmouth and back on more than one occasion. Ah happy days!

YOUR LOCALCALOR GAS STOCKIST

The Leicester Chronicle newspaper, dated 10th December 1874, reported that a meeting had been held at the Boot Inn, Ibstock for the purpose of starting a company to supply the village with gas.

The report states that there were numerous and influential people in attendance and those present were very much in favour of starting a gas company immediately. Ibstock resident, Mr. Baker, spoke to the meeting, pointing out the many advantages to be derived from gas. He said that light was the source of life and that without it no good could be expected. He gave numerous reasons as to why a gas company at Ibstock would prove to be a commercial success. Mr. Loseby of the gas company addressed the meeting and furnished them with all the details. He said, “the success of the inhabitants of Ibstock depended upon the success of the village and that one improvement followed another”. He pointed out that Ibstock, with its cheap coal, being the heart of the mining district and its railway connection only needed gas to make it a suitable place for other manufacturers. He added that once the village had gas, Ibstock would in every sense of the word become brilliant!

A company was formed immediately with capital of £4000, composed of 4000 shares at £1 each, the shares being at a low price to enable all the inhabitants of the village to be able to buy them.

Many people in Ibstock will remember the gasometer situated in Pretoria Road. This photograph from our archive shows a young lady with the gasometer in the background. In the East Midlands Oral History Archive, Mrs. Brenda Clarke talks about Mr. Hawkyard, Manager of the gasworks and Mr. Cooper, who would walk around the village and light the gas lamps with his long pole. This was something that fascinated her as a child and she always wanted to go on his rounds with him.

Did you know that there were houses in Ibstock as late as 1976 that were lit by gas? It is believed that the last gas lit homes were towards the bottom of Melbourne Road. In 1976, Mrs Ada Malin lived there and her grandson remembers the gas lights that were downstairs only. Candlelight was used for the upstairs. He recounts that a shop on the High Street used to stock the gas mantles especially for her. In the end the shade to the light was broken and when anyone entered the house her cry would ring out “Shut the door, shut the door”. The draught from the door would shatter the gas mantle so another trip up the High Street.

Can anybody remember a house with gas light after the late 1970s? We’d love to know.

Tech Talk with Alex Mackenzie While we’re being encouraged to stay inside as much as possible, computers and the internet are becoming more critical than ever before for entertainment and connection to the outside world. So, in this month’s Tech Talk, I’m going to give some tips on how you can make sure you’re staying secure and safe while using your computer and the internet.

Make sure you keep your device up to date/enable automatic updates.

Whether we’re talking about smartphones, tablets or computers, please make sure as soon as updates are available for your device you install them.

I know this can be not very pleasant because it can stop you using your device for a short while, but these moments of downtime are vital. By sending out software updates, companies are making sure their products are secure and not able to be easily hacked. If your device was hacked, this could compromise your data.

Don’t use third party antivirus software, and if you have some, uninstall it!

This advice may sound absurd, but there’s a method to my madness!

In the modern age of computing, antivirus isn’t necessary.

Antivirus companies such as McAfee, Bitdefender, and Avast use the consumer’s fear of viruses as a way to make money. Companies in the past have even been guilty of putting bad code in their software to infect your device or make your computer slow. Making their product seem necessary or appealing. Modern Apple computers and modern Windows computers have antivirus and safety software now built-in so third party software just isn’t needed.

Use passphrases, not passwords!

Everyone knows the importance of keeping their passwords safe. It’s not easy to come up with suitably complex passwords, so here’s a tip for that... don’t use a single password but use a memorable passphrase for better security such as ‘Mary Berry makes excellent cakes’. For added security, you may also want to exchange some letters of the phrase for numbers or symbols. So your password could be ‘M4ryB3rrym*kesexcel%entcake$!’.

For the most security only use one password per online account and never use the same password twice.

I hope these tips help you feel more secure in your daily computing usage. Read next month’s issue of Community Voice for more tips showing you how to master your digital life.

Here’s another installment in the exciting new series of stories by local author and illustrator, Rachel Greaves. Keeping in the Ruffle theme, the new tales follow a toy Ruffle and the adventures he has each month. Read on to find out more…

As before, each month there will be a word within the text. Just find the underlined, italic letters in capitals then re-arrange them to create this month’s word.

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Now available on YouTube – Ruffle’s walks: a series of short video stories

®

Try the Ruffle “Find the word” competition - this month’s word has 8 letters. The answer is on the inside back cover.

For further information about Ruffle’s story books and other adventures visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk or watch the new series of short films on YouTube under ‘Ruffle’s Walks’.

Ruffle had been sitting on the bench for quite a while, lonely now that the children with the boat had returned home. The warmth of the sun had almost gone as it began to grow Darker.

The park keeper had just begun his inspection of the park before closing and locking the gates when he cycled past Ruffle’s bench. The man took a second look before quickly pulling his brakes and stopping. He got off his bike and wheeled it back round to the bench. Reaching over he picked up Ruffle.

‘Someone left you behind eh fella?’ he asked kindly. ‘We can’t have that! Let’s take you home – you’ll be safe and sound then.’

He placed Ruffle carefully in the basket at the front of his bike. ‘There you go – you’ll have a fine view from there!’

The man set off again, this time with Ruffle looking out from the basket. First they steadily rode Around the large boating lake, the park keeper checking that the geese and ducks were settling down calmly for the night. Next the man steered his bike towards the now deserted play area. The swings and Roundabout were still, exhausted from their day’s excitement. The bike then meandered along the path that curved its way through the rest of the park, the gentle hiss of the Tyres the only sound in the evening air. Ruffle’s hair blew gently in the breeze as the bike sped swiftly towards the large Iron gates that stood proudly at the entrance to the park. The park keeper rode through the gates then stopped and dismounted. He leant his bike against a hedge whilst he turned back to lock the gates. Gates secured, he jumped back onto his bike to begin his short journey home along a tree-lined avenue.

A few people were out walking, some with dogs. Was that an Airedale just like Ruffle?... The bell on the handlebars rattled as the bike rode across the drop kerb and onto the man’s drive. He dismounted for the last time and Opened a wooden gate at the side of the small house. The man lifted Ruffle out of the basket and carried him into the little kitchen where his wife was sitting at the kitchen table.

‘Mavis, look what I found sitting on one of the park benches!’ said the man as his wife greeted him with a smile. She came closer for a better look.

‘Oh, what a lovely little dog.’ She gently lifted him from the man’s hands and took Ruffle over to the light for a better view. ‘Why, he’s just like our old dog – the Airedale! Do you remember him Bert? He’s even got a name tag on his collar! Someone took a lot of time and love to make you, little one!’

Mavis smoothed Ruffle’s nametag down to try and read the name. ‘Your nametag is a bit worn and grubby – I can hardly read it! Ruffle? I think his name’s Ruffle! You look like you’ve been on some adventures. Oh, and you’ve lost an eye! Well I can certainly sort that out.’

She carried Ruffle over to a small fabric-covered box on a table. ‘I think I might have a little black bead similar to the other one. It won’t be a perfect match but at least you’ll have two eyes again!’

So that evening Ruffle sat patiently on the woman’s knee as she replaced the lost bead. He then sat proudly on top of the Radiator drying out as Bert and Mavis spent a relaxing and peaceful evening.

But don’t get too comfortable Ruffle – you still have a few more Adventures yet to come!

Such has been the growth in business since Alan Wilson opened his ChipsAway Car-Care-Centre in Ashby in 2012, the need to move to bigger premises was inevitable. As Alan explains, “We now have over 4,000 customers from across our territory, which spans from Swadlincote through Ashby, taking in Ibstock, Whitwick, Coalville and continues right through to Ratby, Groby and part of Glenfield. The need for bigger premises has been on the agenda for some time now and we are delighted to have secured this impressive new facility right in the heart of our area, at Apollo Court, Coalville. This new Car-Care-Centre is centrally placed for all of our customers and we are delighted to have added a new trainee technician Sam, who has joined our existing fully qualified team.”

This bizarre summer term has seen all of us having to learn and adapt to a strange set of circumstances and parents may now have some concerns about their child’s academic progress.

The first thing to say is ‘Please don’t be worried’. Your child’s school will have it in hand. Believe us when we say that during the lockdown, they will have been tirelessly planning and re-planning how to reopen safely and how to work with the children to bring them back into the school and learning environment.

That said, we are here to help. Kip McGrath Coalville offers maths and English tutoring to children aged 5-16. The centre is registered with Ofsted, so we can accept childcare vouchers as payment and some families will be eligible to claim up to 70% of the cost of our services.

We are a husband and wife team, Darren and Helen and we are really looking forward to getting to know more of the local community as everything unlocks and the world returns to a new normal!

Helen is the Curriculum Director and is a qualified maths teacher. She has had roles in secondary schools in Bedfordshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire, including head of department for maths and computer science.

Kip McGrath is a system of tuition that has been working for over 40 years. It was developed because the founders believed that every child deserved an education and the opportunity to succeed. It can really improve a child’s achievement, boost their confidence, and encourage them to work independently.

So how does it work?

• It all starts with a free assessment, so you can be assured they will be taught at a level appropriate for them.

• A personalised learning programme is produced according to each child’s needs.

• The children work with a qualified teacher every week, who will quickly get to know them and their strengths and areas for improvement.

• Every lesson will include a combination of one-to-one teacher time, written tasks and computer tasks.

• Homework is set each week, and these are always review topics, to help with the retention and learning process.

• The children are encouraged with Kip Points, certificates and prizes, but actually it is their confidence growing that is the addictive reward; they really know that they are learning and succeeding.

• We re-assess approximately once a term and feedback to the students and parents. From here the process starts again, adjusting goals or defining new ones; or maybe we say, ‘Goodbye and well done’.

The centre has now re-opened and has started to take bookings for free assessments in the centre. We are also running a summer school during August on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 10am-11:20am and 11:30am-12:50pm.

Please call for more information or to arrange a free assessment on 01530 234543.

CENTRE REOPENS AFTER CURTAILED START!This is a very belated “Hello!” from us at Kip McGrath Coalville. We opened our doors late February this year and then promptly closed them again a month later, when the nation went into lockdown due to Covid-19. It really wasn’t the start we were expecting!

On July 6th, the Government released the health and safety guidelines for the reopening of community centres. We had already starting to plan prior to this. Risk assessments and cleaning policies are now complete and we are currently making the Palace Covid-19 secure and the training of staff and volunteers is also taking place. We plan a careful reopening, which will be completed in stages. The safety of everyone using the palace, staff and volunteers is our main priority, so we will not be rushing this.

As with all venues like ours, there is a lot of work to do to reopen. One way systems will be in place, hand sanitiser stations, separate entrances and exit doors, opening only the minimum number of toilets required and social distancing measures. Some areas of the Palace will remain off limits until guidelines change, such as the bar and the kitchen. There will be access to drinking water and first aid supplies. There is also a Covid19 incident room, separated from the main hall, in the event of anyone becoming ill whilst on the premises.

Over the past few months, we have linked up with several other venues and organisations, brought together by the pandemic and we are now helping each other through the reopening phase. We are currently still helping some people who are shielding in the community and we give a big ‘THANK YOU’ to all the volunteers that have come forward; you are truly amazing. We are currently accepting donations for the foodbank.

Hard work by staff, parents and pupils at Ibstock Junior School pays offIbstock Junior School has worked hard to ensure the safe return of over 280 children, prior to the Summer holidays, in order to give them the opportunity to meet their new teachers. Some children hadn’t attended school since March, but the Junior School were very impressed with the way in which children settled and how relaxed and happy they were. Children quickly adapted to all the extra hand washing and social distancing in place.

Mr Lewin, Headteacher said, “We felt it was extremely important to get as many children back into school before Summer, so that they didn’t fell unduly anxious about the return in Autumn term, after such a long length of time at home. Parents have supported us with this and said they have been helped by the videos and letters we have posted on our school website, in order to prepare the children for their return. We hope that this will mean a more enjoyable Summer for all our families and also my staff, who have been working tirelessly throughout the lockdown”. • Most carpets dry in 1-2 hours

The ongoing Covid-19 restrictions are still having an impact on everyone – but you don’t need to let them stop you achieving your learning goals this year.GoLearn, Leicestershire County Council’s Adult Learning Service, has hundreds of part-time day, evening and weekend courses running across the county. Many classes have been moved online, but we are still offering some classroom-based learning. Whether your course is classroom-based, online or a mixture of both, all learners will receive expert help and support, with tutors on hand to give you all the guidance you need.

For courses that take place in a classroom, we have reduced class sizes, created one-way systems in all our venues, increased the amount of cleaning between classes and taken every effort to make sure our centres are safe for learners.

Courses go live for enrolment on our website on 3 August and will start in September, and everyone who enrols between 3rd August and 1st September will get 20% off course tuition fees.

HOW HYPNOTHERAPY CAN HELP WITH PANIC AND ANXIETYBy Hollie Jordan, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist

What Is Hypnotherapy?Hypnotherapy is a relaxation technique used when a person is in an altered state of consciousness, known as a trance. While in a hypnotic state, a person is deeply relaxed, focused, and more open to suggestion. Hypnotherapy is used to help manage a variety of health issues, including stress, skin conditions, weight loss, sleep disorders, and smoking cessation.

What happens during a typical hypnotherapy session?During the first half of the session the therapist will talk to the client using a variety of techniques used to guide the brain into the left prefrontal cortex. This area of the brain becomes active when a person is happy. Thus, one of the main aims of this therapy is to stimulate this area of the brain to retrain your brain to become more positively focused and happier! When you are operating from this area of the brain you are more able to come up with solutions to problems and it compliments trance perfectly. Some may say the first half of the session effectively primes your brain for hypnosis!

During the second half of the session, the therapist then guides the client into a relaxed state. Once the client is feeling calm, yet alert, the therapist brings their attention to behaviours they would like to change. The therapist then uses words of encouragement, affirmations, metaphors and positive suggestions, such as “You no longer feel stressed” or “You are strong, confident and capable”.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help With Panic and Anxiety Symptoms?Research has shown that hypnotherapy can help relieve stress, fear, anxiety and symptoms of panic disorder. While under hypnosis, a person with panic disorder may be guided to bring attention to coping with specific symptoms and overcoming limiting behaviours.

Hypnotherapy can help a person with anxiety improve self-esteem, overcome negative thinking, and manage troublesome symptoms. Additionally, hypnotherapy can assist in treating common co-occurring conditions, including depression, headaches and migraines, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), agoraphobia and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Getting Treated With HypnotherapyThe overall hypnotherapy experience can vary from person to person. You can read Happy Head Hypnotherapy’s 5 star reviews on Google and Facebook to see what local people are saying about their experiences. Many people are sceptical and perhaps have reservations about hypnotherapy, fearing that they will lose control of their thoughts and actions. This is not surprising considering how hypnosis is portrayed in the media and on stage in popular seaside resorts!! People are often showed behaving in wild and silly ways. Despite these negative connotations, hypnotherapy cannot make you do anything you do not want to do nor can it make you do anything that goes against your moral and ethical code. Rather, hypnotherapy helps build self-awareness, resilience, confidence and helps a person to overcome unwanted behaviours.

Happy Head Hypnotherapy are your local team of hypnotherapists, based in Ravenstone, Coalville and Hamilton, Leicester. We offer a FREE initial consultation where we talk a little more about how the brain works, how hypnotherapy helps and how you can get back on top of things. It will also give you an opportunity to talk and ask any questions. You will never be pressured to book any further sessions during the consultation and our therapists prefer that you go away and have a think before booking in as we like to know that all clients are serious and willing to change before commencing treatment. If you would like to book in for a FREE consultation call 07817 907314.

Caring for others has always been central to Dixie’s ethos and is more important now than ever. The team of staff who have enabled the school to stay open throughout lockdown for key workers exemplify this. As ever, however, sometimes it is the pupils’ action which is most striking. Our buddy system, which sees the oldest group in the school, our Sixth Formers, supporting our youngest pupils, has continued, albeit remotely, with older students getting in touch with their buddies to help them with their work and to give some emotional support as well. There are many examples of new initiatives developing as well, like Erin Brining of Y7 going online to deliver story time for a Junior School class and, of course, as a school we were delighted to be able to donate 270 pairs of protective eye wear to local surgeries who were running short of PPE.

Academic progress has also remained a priority. The ICT team has been permanently based on-site to help enable staff to deliver their teaching remotely, with teachers putting their new-found Zoom and Google Meet expertise to use in delivering live video lessons, pupils being guided through excellent online digital resources and even end-of-year exams adapted to take place remotely. The school has also worked hard to devise activities requiring pupils to work with each other, over the phone or online, and to set tasks which require pupils to work away from their screens. With GCSEs cancelled, Y11 have been able to start their A level courses, making the most of this time gained to get a head-start on the new way of thinking and working A level requires. In a similar vein,

teachers have put together bespoke university bridging courses which are now being delivered to every member of the Upper Sixth to help them get ahead of the game for this next step in their education.

A sense of school spirit and going the extra mile are also key at Dixie and the Dixie Facebook page is packed with heartening examples of this during Lockdown. Music teacher, Miss Olivia Mason, was at the heart of a project seeing pupils and staff collaborate online to produce a music video of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’; Mrs Emma Billington, Head Teacher at the Junior School, hand-delivered new school books to almost 100 families, (whilst observing social distancing rules); the three Dracup sisters, Olivia (Lower Sixth), Imogen (Y9) and Felicity (Y7) did not want to miss out on the annual House cross-country event and so ran it themselves in isolation on the scheduled day; Head of Science, Mr Joe Kirkwood has kept his form entertained with his daily ‘Tie of the Day’ video; Headmaster Mr Richard Lynn has maintained a twice-weekly assembly broadcast from school and there have been numerous other examples.

“These have been and continue to be challenging times for all of us in so many ways,” comments Mr Richard Lynn. “For the pupils, parents, staff and our entire school community to have responded in the way they have shows remarkable spirit, resilience and togetherness. I could not be prouder of our community and the hope and inspiration their actions provide.”

Dixie Grammar School - New world, same valuesStaff, students and their parents at Dixie Grammar School, Market Bosworth, like every organisation, have had to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. They are finding, however, that whilst their environment may have changed, the core values of their education and school life remain the same.
