Stayed at a budget hotel near the British Museum--This sounds sort of familiar??
Blew a bunch of money on clothes in London--thought I would get a job in Vienna
and make up for it.
Here’s the coat (my birthday party in Grinzing in November):

Then, on to the Continent. I picked the German study tour. Overnight ferry to the Hook of Holland, then
meeting up with Fraulein Schaettle and our bus driver, and a wonderful trip to Vienna.
Think we had breakfast here:
The trip schedule mentioned the Hotel Estherea, but this
seems a bit higher class than I remembered..
We were in Amsterdam in the early morning.
Boyd McCleary had just made a killing on the Reichsmark/Dollar exchange rate, and
I felt very, very outclassed!
Great 3 week introduction to Europe. Things that stand out:Having a bit too much “Rauchtbier” in Nuremberg and dancing in the fountain, losing someone (can’t remember who) on the subway in East Berlin, seeing the Ishtar Gate at the Pergamum Museum, standing in the huge Sportzpalast in Nuremberg and
shuddering, remembering the torchlight Nazi parades of newsreels, breaking into a spontaneous rendition of “We shall
Overcome” at the Berlin Wall with Steve Catron, Kate Manke and Boyd McCleary (I think), a wonderful day on the Mondsee.

Mine was on the Karl LuegerPlatz. I always had problems with my “ie’s” and
“ei’s”. Read out loud a story about someone who thought he saw a gloved hand at the foot of his bed, and he said, “Halt, oder ich schiesse!”, but I read it , “Halt, oder ich scheisse!”. The teacher
refused to believe I didn’t do it on purpose........ Anybody remember that? I
think Rich Vest was in the class.
Vienna had English Week--there were English Flags everywhere...
Quite a few disappeared...
We had a reception at the Rathaus. A flag disappeared
there, too!
The Fall was absolutely beautiful....
Wienerwald…
Looks like this group got lost and found the yellow brick road instead and are off
to see the Wizard…
I met this girl named Sandy...
Wien, wien, nur du allein…
Sollst stets die Stadt meiner
Traume sein!
Remember this place?

I woke up one morning and realized I only had a few weeks left in Vienna. There was a mad scramble to see all
the things “I’d get around to”, but never had...
Finally, the day came to fly home...
How do you sum up a year?
Especially THAT year!
Sandy and I were married in 1971
We went back in 1975
Sandy was pregnant with Julie
and in 1985
and in 1995 with our kids...
We saw Clarence and Alberta in Albuquerque in 2004
We’ve kept up contact with a few good Vienna friends
And today the Palais Kinsky has been restored to its previous glory…
and is now an Art Auction House…
In the courtyard there are restaurants…
Our daughter, Julie, and son, Steve, bothstudied with IES in Durham for a year. Our youngest, Scott, spent a year at the
London School of Economics...
But you can’t step into the same river twice...
Once upon a time there was this magic place.......
It will stay with us forever.......
Because it has become a part of us.......
And we have become a part of it.......
Sandy, Lily, and I thank you for the wonderful privilege of sharing that
special time with you!
