  • (7) Further lnformatlon about the study is contained in the questionnaires that were used and the 'bibles' w h ~ c h were distributed earlier this year, contalnlng the unuelghted frequencies for many of the variables. In due course, there wll l b e a fully documented technical report of thm study and a comprehensive codebook to gulde secondary analysls of the data. T h ~ s w ~ l l probably only become available when the data are offlclally deposited in the €SRC Data Archlve at the University o f Essex.

    (8) You wlll flnd some "system misslng" cases when you run the setupfiles. The largest number lnvolved is 8 cases. Thls d ~ s c r e p a n c y arlses from , mlsmatch between the BCS respondent number and the orlglflal respondent number c o ~ t a l n e d in elther the BES83 or the BSAS86 data f ~ l e s . A few respondents were glven to the Campalgn Study who were elther not actually in the appropriate data flle or who were in the data flle but with a respondent number different to the one supplled Of course, any matching procedure between files must match respondent numbers exactly and i t is thls mlsmatch between numbers that leads to the cases belng flagged a s "system missing". They are however valld cases for analysls.

    ( 9 ) Cross-sectional welghts are lncluded on all flles, but for subset a n a l y s ~ s or panel analysis you will need to construct your o w n weights uslng the procedure described in the WEIGHTING s e c t ~ o n that follows

  • WEIGHT ING ( 4 ' --------- ( l ) p c !&?iqhtLng Lpqic: Thls survey is a panel survey based upon three

    sources --- the 1983 BES, the 1986 BSAS and the CLONES (substitutes for indlvlduals leaving the panel). These basic sources o r l g ~ n a l l y requlred weighting to make them representative of the electorate in 1983 or 1986 The logic of the Glasgow University panel welghtlng scheme is to apply lnterlocklng quota target welghts, modlfylng the orlginal weights, in order to make any analytlc data set conform to the same characterlstlcs a s the 1986 BSAS &g2 to make it a s representatlv~ a s that 3000-respondent clustered random sample. The interlocking quota scheme takes account of Class, Age, Sex and Reglon (hence "CASR") .

    BASE --- . t h i s appears on all the GU panel waves; - , lt lndlcates the source of the respondent; values are 1 = resp came from BSCyS.86

    2 = resp came from BES83 3 = resp is a clone for a BSAS86

    resp who left panel

    RESP --- this is a respondent ldentiflcation number, it is nqt gnigug by ltself; ~t 1s unique when used in comblnatlon wlth BASE Ile. a BSAS respondent and a BES respondent may have the same RESP number but, for example, no two BSAS respondents will have the s a m e RESP .

    BASEWT --- this is the "base welght" that the respondent had originally in 1983 or 1986.

    The cross-sectlon weights for each cross-section are a s follows:-

    Crqas=sect ion --- Weight variable 1983 BES WEIGHT 1986 BSAS WTFACTOR P r e wave (March/Aprll 87) GWTPRE Wave Two (1.e. flrst fortnlght

    of campaign) GWTTWO Wave Four (1.e second fortnlght

    of campaign) GWTFOUR Post Electlon GWTPOST

    STRaTh87 --- thls is the stratum lnto whlch the respondent falls in 1987; the strata are defined in terms of an lnterlocklng quota of Class, Age, Sex, Reglon; thls v a r ~ a b l e is used in paragraph ( 4 ) below

  • ( 1 ) restrict (1.e. SELECT) analysis to the subsample of Interest

    ( 1 1 ) use SPSSX command %LE51 BY BASEwI

    ( 1 1 1 ) with those SELECT and WEIGHT commands ~n o p e r a t ~ o n calcula-te FRERUEIUCIES GENERFIL=STRATAB7. Let u s cal l these percentage frequencies the frequencies baseweighted.

    You must create your own weighting variable called. for erample, SUBWT, a s follows, using the f o l l o w ~ n g 36 llnes of SPSSX IF commands

    .. IF iSTRATAB7 EQ,1111) SUBWT = BASEWT + (target

    frequ)/(baseweighted frequ) etc. etc.

    &!pig You c a n see full examples of t h ~ s at the end o f our setup programmes.

    To check that you have constructed the weighting variable correctly you must now do a thlrd run'

    WEIGHT BY S U B WT FPEQUENCIES GENERAL=STRATA87

    This my54 produce a pattern of frequencies that e r a c t l y conforms to the target frequencies

    I s r q e t Erequeacies fgc STRATAQ2. these are based o n the 1986 854s representative cross-sectlon. They a r e a s follows:

  • BCS Data Tape page 10

  • To construct a panel you must use SPSSX MATCH FILES to combine cross- section files.

    Since the respondent ldentifler RESP is npt unlque (see above) you must use two '.'keysu in combination for the matching but that is easy. The SPSSX command is:

    MFITCH FILES

    EX WSE RESE

    4+ Note also that RESP does not exist on the 1983 and 1986 flles and must be constructed uslng the formulae given 15 the Genera\ Notes (above). I t does exist on all the Glasgow ~niverslty flles.
