Rivers of Future

• Estimation on the world water demand

• Water poverty index of major countries

• The growth of water market led by increasing water demand– By 2050, world population is expected to be 9.2 billion– 70% (6.4 billon) of the population will live in urban

The Rivers Restoration Project in Korea

• Stable Water Resources– Procurement of Water Resources:

• 18.6 Billion ㎥ (2009) 21.4 Billion ▶ ㎥ (2020) 22 Billion ▶ ㎥ (2050)

• Stable Supply of Clean Water– The creation of a safe and clean water environment

– The reinforcement of demand management for ecological systems conservation and efficient water use

– High-quality water source security: improvement of water quality in main streams

• Planning of quantitative and qualitative improvements of ecological spaces – Expansion of wetland conservation areas

– Contaminated rivers restoration

• Green Revolution of Life / Activation of Ecological Tourism– Green Village Movement Program, Activation of Ecological Tourism

– Promotion of the bicycle for use as an environmentally-friendly mode of transportation

The Four Major Rivers in Korea

• Major rivers in Korea– Han River : 494 km, basin area 35,770 km2

– Nakadong River : 506 km, 23,384 km2

– Geum River : 395 km, 9,912 km2

– Yeongsan River : 139 km, 3,467 km2

• River Restoration Project– prevention flood disaster– improving water quality and restoring ecology– water acquisition, securing utility water– promoting tourism

The Han River Restoration Plan• Water Quality Improvement

– Expanding and upgrading environmental facilities: • Sewage·waste water treatment facilities (55), Village level sewage

pipelines (91), Reinforcement of TP treatment facilities (217), Expansion of sewage pipelines (44)

– Control planning for non-point contaminating sources: • Rainwater retention facilities, Ecological detention ponds (16),

Agricultural ponds and ecological wetlands (30)

• Ecological Restoration– installation of ecological wetlands (17 points, 13km) – restoration of branch streams and city streams

• Local Development along with the River– Phased maintenance of local streams (84points, 480km)

directly flowing into the Han River– Installation and reparation of banks (341km), Dredging sewage

pipeline (52km), Development of ecological streams (87km)

Wide Area Sensing Applications in River Restoration

• Prevention of flood disaster– maintenance of waterway : measuring the flow (water level, pondage, precipitation)

– reinforcement of old banks : sensing the crack of bank (displacement of bank incline)

• Water quality improvement & ecological restoration– TP (Total Phosphorus levels of water) treatment : measuring the water quality (pH, BOD,

ammonia nitrogen, arsenic, xian, phenol, .. )

– control measures of non-point contaminating sources : tracing the source of contamination

• Prevention of Water Pollution Accidents – residential waste water treatment facilities

– industrial waste water end-treatment facilities

Wide Area Sensing• Flood control

– measure the flow every 5 min on heavy raining

• River facility management– monitoring the displacement of bank, dam

– install the sensors 10x10m in area

• Water quality control– sensing the water quality

– install the sensors 500m apart

Requirements of the Wide Area Sensing Network

• transmission coverage– reach from the sensors on the water surface or river facility– 500m ~ 2km range

• coarse environments– sensors installed on hard maintaining place– operating 10 more years without maintaining

• low traffic volume– less than 100 bytes per message– periodic messages every 5min
