The Indianola Garden Club will meet on November 18th, at the Clubhouse. There will be a social time at 12:30 and our guest speaker will be a representative from Bay Hay and Feed to speak about “putting your garden to bed for the winter”. After the presentation, there will be a business meeting. If you haven’t paid your dues, remember to bring your $20 dues to the November meeting. The Special Garden Sign will be back in the spring, but is resting comfortably for now. Our October meeting was a tour through Karen Brindley’s wonderful garden for a glimpse of it in the fall with so much color still showing and such wonder-ful mums and dahlias and many other colorful plants as well. Thank you again, Karen, for sharing it with us.

If you have any garden club questions, you can call Nancy at 297-1245. New members are always welcome.

The blazing leaves of autumn are quickly falling off the trees, ushering in the remarkable chain of special events in our near future. As I write this, I am anticipating the joy of greeting the trick or treaters to my home in a few hours, which brings back all the memories of Halloweens in my own past. Those same thoughts were on the minds of the great crew who showed up to decorate the clubhouse for the kids’ party –it became a ghoulish wonderland! Special thanks go to the Kolbs and extended family for their faithful decorating, and making dinner and running the party for the kids.

The wonder of this evening, the sheer uncontrolled fever of having a massive plunder of candies and treats that will not cross your path again until the next Halloween - what could be better? Hidden behind a

mask, you can be anyone you want to be. Power. Mystery. Intrigue. We celebrate our little ones this time of year, encourage their imagination, embrace them as we give them their turn to wrap themselves in the cocoon of our traditions. Indianola loves these traditions. If you want to witness some of that joy while helping at the children’s Christmas Party, just email me. If adult joy is more your thing, there will be a number of opportunities after the holiday. Stay tuned. And may you all have much to give thanks for at this Thanksgiving.

With gratitude and regard,[email protected]

Kids’ Party and Dance Kick Off Halloween

Though the weather was touch and go, the kids were go, go, go on Halloween.

The Clubhouse was packed full of kids in costume ready to have a hot dog and

march in the costume parade on stage - a few needed help getting off stage while

others hammed it up.

The next stop was the IndianolaCountry Store and then off fordoor to door trick or treating.

The night before’s Halloween Dance with DJ music was almost as well attended and was every bit as much fun for the 50 or more 21-and-overs in attendance.

The Post Office Corner Committee has met and discussed various suggestions by membership regarding how to improve the corner bed formerly home to the big maple tree at the Post Office. After careful consideration we are proposing the following:

1. The improvement should be contained within the existing bed boundaries with the exception of the walkway to the Post Office door where new surfacing seems appropriate.

2. The focus of the improvement would be toward simplicity and a solution that feels like Indianola, and that it would become a part of what is already there: Clubhouse, Dock, Pavilion, Store, Gill Property. Something that improves the feel, use and finish of the space, but one that settles back to become a supporting part of the fabric of the existing structures and spaces. Something that supports and enhances, but does not dominate.

3. We propose removal of the log between the small parking spot and bed, and putting in an 18" wide strip of pavers to make access to and from vehicles parking there easier, and encourage people from walking in the bed.

4. Because Bill Sibbett offered wood for benches and a signboard we are proposing replacement of the existing kiosk to make it larger and more accommodating. Bridget Young has assembled a design/build team consisting of Mike Stuntz, Spencer West and Brad Simpson to create the new signboard kiosk. We are proposing to relocate the kiosk so that it is not in the planting bed, as its current location may be the best place to locate a small tree. The kiosk could be located parallel to and located on the north edge of the bed over the existing PVC cleanout so that we can keep that cleanout from being in a walkway. This would result in a 6 ft wide walkway on the north side, partially finished with pavers to improve the access from Indianola Road to the Post Office door, with the kiosk on the south side of the walkway, and put pavers on the south side of the kiosk, as well as incorporate a bench, so that a walking surface surrounds the sign board.5. The south face of the kiosk could be dedicated to posting the Breeze with hinged plexiglass to protect from

weather, and because the north side of the board would have the most visibility to passersby, it would be made available to the community for private postings, etc. We are proposing a larger roof-with a bench incorporated into the structure on the south side, the side that faces the water-to provide a covered area for that bench which would extend over the area on the north side as well for

viewers of the posted items, and additionally, provide a cover for those seeking shelter from the rain.

6. We propose a planting area that mirrors what the Langlies have done near the front door of the Post Office by using similar stones to raise the soil about 12" above grade and create a planter where a small (15± ft) tree could be located about where the signboard is now. All raised planting areas would be set back from street and parking, at least 18", so that the bed is at grade adjacent to the paving, which would allow for some

pavers at the perimeter. No raised area would extend into the fire hydrant 3 ft diameter zone on the Indianola Road side. A gravel meander would cross diagonally through the bed to encourage access from the parking area to the street in an alternate location near the fire hydrant.

7. We propose using ground covering plants including ferns that will soften the ground plane; and a diminutive vine on a portable, easily removed trellis for access to the pole no higher than 10 feet that may curve partially around the communications pole to soften the harshness of the view of that and the PVC conduits.

8. In future a local artist may have an opportunity to have their metal cutout or wood carving, etc. of fish, fowl or whatever may be deemed appropriate, perhaps mounted above the roof of the kiosk.

We hope that most if not all of the work could be done by volunteers, and funded by individuals who are interested in doing so.

We are suggesting that this could be a community recognition project, wherein the

IBIC dedicates (by a plaque in the ground?) this space to all those who have been instrumental in the efforts to improve Indianola and the IBIC properties in a significant way over the past many years.

Your comments will be appreciated. Email the Breeze [email protected].

Decisions, Decisions ...Kim Rothfus found a perfect day to bring her twin grandsons to the beach. Standing in the shadow of the dock and looking very “Indianola”, two-year-olds Baylor and Briggan Davis are enjoying the sounds and smells of the beach. Their only decision; should they throw a rock or dig in the sand first? Both!

Stevenson’s GrandsonBecomes Eagle ScoutBob and Annie Stevenson of Indianola had an ex-citing trip to Sacramento to attend grandson Kevin Brase’s Eagle Court of Honor award ceremony. Especially exciting was the fact that their other grandson, Keith, is also an Eagle Scout, and Bob received his Eagle Award in 1945. Bob was the oldest scout at the event and for that, received a standing ovation!

Myriad Lives IntertwingledIn the Salish Sea, creatures are inexorably linked to each other, linked to those in our watersheds, and of course, linked to us. John F. Williams will show excerpts from his collection of films to highlight some of these relationships and to suggest that they aren’t random, that there actually is a “system” in “Ecosystem.”

Please remember ...

The IBIC Clubhouse is an Emergency Warming StationOnce again, coordinating with the American Red Cross, the IBIC and Indianola volunteers are ready to open the Clubhouse as a Warming Station. When extended periods of power outage occur during cold weather, the Clubhouse will be opened to provide the “3 C’s” - Comfort, Care & Communication. The Clubhouse generator supplies the heat. Coffee, tea and hot cocoa will help to warm your insides. Cell phones can be re-charged and Wi-Fi is available. Everyone is welcome. Signs will be posted at the Clubhouse front entry, the Post Office and the Indianola Country Store during operating hours.

No Alcohol, No Smoking, and No Pets permitted in the building.

A Message from the IBIC Warming Station Volunteers . . . Please don't forget to keep an eye out for neighbors who might need assistance, either during an extended power outage, or in any situation where local travel is difficult. Examples of ways to help might include offering extra

blankets, batteries, candles, firewood, and other supplies. Are there medical needs to consider? These are important conversations to have, and our community has a wealth of resources to share if we all pool together!

On October 27th Quigg Brothers Construction completed Phase II of the Indianola Dock rehabilitation project.

As with Phase I in 2014, Phase II involved the installation of 20 galvanized pilings, galvanized ‘H’ beam pile caps and welded and galvanized brackets thru-bolted to the existing deck stringers. Additionally, in excess of 50 creosote pilings were removed from the existing structure.

A dedicated group of Port constituents have committed their time, expertise and knowledge to accomplish the significant renovation accomplished to date. Contract preparation, engineering details, permit preparation to name a few. These dedicated folks know who they are and their commitment to our Community Icon is admirable and greatly appreciated by the Port Commissioners.

Funding for both phases was accomplished through the dogged persistence of Commissioner John Lane

via Government Obligation bonds.

We also want to thank Matt Matson for again assisting the Port to place the swim float on dry ground, and to Wally Frizzell for granting the Port the ground to store the float for the winter months.

Your Port Commissioners are proud to announce that our dock

is in excellent condition.

Once again, the crew did a wonderful job placing piles while taking care not to destroy the decking at end of the dock. From October 13th to the 27th, work was done at both the end and the head of the dock.

Along with the new pilings, you’ll see a new ladder, and two navigation lights - Coast Guard required - at the end. A new float ramp will be coming with the float next summer.

One of the most asked questions has been, “How do they get those piles in straight?” As put by supervisor Dan Wolf (left) they use a level, and they have a very good crane operator.

The crew was hard at work

leaving the dock stronger than

ever. The last bit of work called for

two of their car-penters placing deck boards at

the end.

Not too busy to be nice, the crew also disposed of

a creosote log that washed up

on the beach that week (right).
