Bill Plock reported about the tragic fatal crash of an experienced cyclist on South Wadsworth Boulevard near Chatfield Reservoir. Bill had spoken with the cyclists riding with the victim of the crash and they described him as swerving into the traffic lane to avoid debris in the shoulder. This story was reported by Channel 9 as follows and also reported in 303 Cycling: JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A bicyclist was killed after being hit by an SUV near Chatfield Reservoir on Thursday morning, the Colorado State Patrol said. Mammoth Parking Lot off Highway 40. He also emphasized how Denver Century is Bike Jeffco’s main source of funding, and therefore, a very important event for Bike Jeffco.

Electric Bike Conversions - Jason Livingston, Electric Bike OutfittersDave requested Jason present to the membership about E bikes as they are rapidly becoming more popular and the technology is moving fast.

Jason provided some history on how he got involved in the E bike industry. The following is found on the Electric Bike Outfitters website:

When I decided to outfit an old mountain bike I had sitting in the garage with an electric kit, I struggled to find all the information that would help me select the right model for my needs. There didn’t seem to be anyone available to consult with me, or answer questions. I knew there was a better way.  With fifteen years of experience as a Design and Manufacturing Engineer, I began evaluating and testing a multitude of electric bike kits, pushing them to their limits. After a rigorous process of testing and selecting the absolute best electric kits available, Electric Bike Outfitters was born.  Each kit caters to different needs and different budgets and we have a team of experienced riders that can answer questions and help you select the best model. That's where the "outfitters" comes in.  We encourage questions, enjoy the collaboration, and look forward to the ripple effect of EBO smiling riders!

Jason passed around a couple of different motors being used for different applications. All of the motors are governed at 20 mph. Jason reported the current break down of types of riders: 60% Retirees, 30 Commuters, 10% for Medical Reasons. Jason said that the medical category of rider is growing so that it will probably overtake the commuters. Technology advances with E bikes are mainly anticipated in the design and manufacture of smaller and more powerful batteries. He also mentioned that there is 75 year old cyclist doing a tour across the U.S. on an Electric Bike Outfitters system which they are watching closely for data on wear and performance over the long haul. Regarding commuting, Jason heard from one of his customers that he has reduced his commute by 25 minutes.

Denver Electric Bike Ordinances – Charlie MyersCharlie confirmed that Denver’s Chapter 54, Article IX. Bicycles and Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Devices have not been updated yet to include accommodations for E bikes. Electric personal assistive devices as stated in the ordinance refer to electric wheel chairs. The concern remains high that there will be a patchwork of inconsistent ordinances relative to the operation of E bikes on paths and trails. Boulder has already updated their ordinances to include E bikes. However, it was noted that according to the posted map of trails open to E bikes, the assist motor may not be used on certain segments of trails.
